Gamecube - Lego Star Wars

4 stars (A good GameCube port of a surprisingly-fun game) - This GameCube version of Lego Star Wars was released a full six months after the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions of the game, an odd decision considering the frequently-assumed target audiences of the different consoles. Even so, this delayed port is nevertheless a very solid one, and gamers who have Cubes can pick this one up knowing it looks and plays just as well on this console as it does on the others. Lego Star Wars is a game that is forgiving enough that children will enjoy it (i.e. a character who gets "killed" is simply resurrected nearby). At the same time, also has a few challenges that will give adults a share of fun. The game features a VERY large number of unlockables and extras that can only be completed by collecting certain items and collecting large enough numbers of the game's currency (known as bits). Some of the levels are not terribly difficult to beat - but can be challenging to beat with sufficient numbers of bits, some of which are lost when a character dies. Of note, Lego Star Wars also has an easy-to-use cooperative feature, which is a great deal of fun regardless of the age of the people you are playing with. The presentation of this game is outstanding. The graphics are beautiful and glossy and portray the "Lego" and the "Star Wars" both wonderfully. The cutscenes are funny and capture well the storyline of the first three episodes even though there is no voicework to speak of. John Williams soundtrack is here and the game even has the appropriate tracks for each level. Hearing that trademark "Darth Maul" anthem during the duel with the Sith is a real treat. There are only a few drawbacks to the game. One, it's a bit on the short side - an adult could probably plow through the entire campaign in 6-8 hours. That being said, each level has hidden items and unlockables that are only accessible after you've beaten that level in the regular story mode, so there is a...

The Sims 2

5 stars (Simsational!) - In truth, The Sims 2 is the best PC game ever. I was a HUGE fan of the original Sims, and it was my favorite game for quite awhile. However, I recently aquired The Sims 2 , and I must say, I was so excited over it I couldn't sleep. It is a grand improvement over the original, and it opened my eyes to the number of flaws that the first Sims game had. Quite honestly, I don't know if I'll ever be able to play it again. Here are just a few of the high points: ~In The Sims 2 , players have an incredibly large, extensive amount of features, clothes, hairstyles, etc. to choose from when they create their Sim. I'm not even going to compare it to the original because, well, it just doesn't compare! ~The addition of family trees and life cycles was what excited me most about this game, and quite frankly, it is the one thing that makes this game totally worth your money, in my opinion. Sims now age from baby to toddler to kid to teen to adult to elder, where they will eventually pass on to to old age, depending on there aspiration level. It's a great joy to see your Sims start out as babies and end up as successful, married adults, and I was just as proud of my Sims as I would be with my own child...not that I would know anything about that. ~Aspirations and fears give the game a whole new meaning. Your Sims can have one of five different aspirations: Wealth, Romance, Family, Knowledge, and Popularity. Depending on which of these your Sim has, they will have different lifetime hopes and fears, which change periodically. When an aspiration is realized, Sims gain reward points that they can use to buy cool things; when a fear is realized, however, Sims lose reward points. ~The Build/Buy options are FAR more improved. Now you can make homes that have more than three stories, change the appearance of that ugly blue bed, create mountains, lakes, whatever! ~The neighborhood options are different too. Choose from playing in Pleasantview,...

The Cheese and the Worms - The Cosmos of a Sixteenth-Century Miller

4 stars (Microhistory of the masses) - Borne of the microhistory genre, "The Cheese and the Worms" provides a glimpse into the life of a miller in medieval Italy. No ordinary miller is 'Menocchio', however, as he is inquisitioned for his radical religious philosophies. In a time and place where Catholicism was undoubtedly the religion of Europe, Menocchio harbored unique ideas about religious doctrine, the teachings of the Catholic Church, and man's purpose. Although some of his many ideas contradict others that he had, he was well-read and surprisingly well-educated for a man of his station. As Ginzburg says, though, we must look to the Protestant Reformation and the invention of the printing press as being major catalysts for such learning and religious evolution. Within the microhistory genre, "The Cheese and the Worms" is most fascinating when we ask the question: Was this an isolated phenonmenon or was this a reflection of many people's views? The answer, I suppose, lies with Menocchio, but there is still much to be gleaned from this book. 5 stars (Well written, fascinating tale) - Description of a miller with an intresting ('modern') cosmological belief whose rebellion in thought is prosecuted by the Taliban of that time, the Roman Catholic Church. Forced to explain his nonAristotelian views (and, if Ginzburg is telling the truth, he responded extremely well to the inquisitors' questions!), the miller outwits his arrogant, narrow-minded judges and so wins the reward of torture and imprisonment, losing his wife, family, everything in the end. Galileo, who had a higher social position and powerful protectors, suffered no worse than house arrest, in comparison. 5 stars (Keep this book in mind) - Anytime you want to tell yourself that the Catholic Church isn't that bad, just keep this book in mind. It is just more proof that the church is the most corrupt institution in the history of time. . .with that in mind. The book is very interesting, it deals with th...

Salonica- City of Ghosts - Christians- Muslims and Jews- 1430-1950

4 stars (History Matters) - Mazower captures in remarkable ways the history of Salonica, a town which is today in northern Greece. At the same time many events that took place at Salonica were repercussions and optics on European and Middle Eastern history as a whole. For very different reasons at different epocs, Salonica found itself responding to events far beyond its shores. In the fifteenth century it became the home of many Jews expelled from Spain. After centuries under Ottoman rule, in the twentieth century it saw the return of Greek rule and then the forced removal of its large Jewish population under German occupation. The story of Salonica is an illustration of the ways in which a single physical place has seen whole communities come and go, typically under tragic circumstances. The book reminds us of how difficult it is for human beings with different beliefs and ideologies to live peacefully together. For many centuries this was achieved in Salonica, but then something changes and persecutions and emigrations follow. Mazower tells these stories without any attempt to prove a thesis about inter-faith or even human relations. There are interesting individuals but no heroes or saints. Communities do good things and do bad things. It is a story of many human lives that would otherwise have been buried with the communities that over the years have been forced to leave and officially left out of the city's history. After reding it Salonica will be on my next trip to Europe! 5 stars (Thessaloniki Explained) - The Mazower book is superb. It makes the city come alive with a careful and thorough review of the city's history. Its ethnic composition was fascinating to explore. His footnotes put me on to two other books which added even more to the story of this intriguing city. He made some of what I have felt on my several visits become clear. Although he writes in a precise chronological manner, he inserts up-to-date observations which make the mosaic of T...

Modern European History

5 stars (AP European History Students: Please Read!) - I just got my AP exam scores today for the 2005 examinations and I am proud to say that I got a 4 on the exam thanks to this book and the Princeton's Review Book. This book has a really good and easy to understand review for each of the topics tested on the AP exam and it really helps alot! 5 stars (ABSOLUTELY AMAZING) - I was in an AP class. I did not put my full effort into the AP Euro class and was scared right before the AP. Right about a month before the test I bought this book and read it all the way through. The day before the test I reviewed what I felt were the top 5 most important subjects (French Revolution, WWI, etc.) Needless to say, to my surprise I got a 5 on the test. An I truly would have to say that 85% of that grade came from reading this book. 5 stars (Partition of Lithuania) - I have found one error in this otherwise excellent book, an error that has been repeated in many other books of modern European history. When discussing the partitions of Poland the author discusses the partition of Lithuanian territories as though these territories were a part of Poland. He states that Byelorussia and Polish Ukraine were ceded to Russia by Poland. This is not true. The fact of the matter is that Byelorussia and parts of the Ukraine were ruled by Lithuania and not by Poland. There was a Lithuanian Ukraine but there never was any such thing as the Polish Ukraine. Hopefully these matters will be resolved in later editions. ...

Hallmark Card Studio 2005 Deluxe

4 stars (Best Greeting card software I have ever seen.) - This software is the best I have ever heard of or tried. I'm having a ball making cards for my friends and family special occasions. It is remarkably easy to use and it gives you the ability to change just about everything. My only suggestion to Hallmark is to issue a larger databank of selections to add the already extensive one that comes with the package. I have hundreds af friends and relatives on my list. This Christmas will be exciting, especially when I add photos to the cards. 4 stars (Cards R Fun) - I am just learning to work with this product, " Hallmark Card Studio 2005 Deluxe ...I am enjoying what I can do with it so far. 3 stars (Ok for canned cards) - I was disappointed with Hallmark Card Studio 2005 Deluxe because it doesn't allow you to create your own card, just the cards as developed in the program. This was a feature we were looking for since our old program allowed us to create our own cards from scratch! ...

Warioware- Touched-

4 stars (do not touch the bad) - Wario Ware touch is a great game but here are my complaints 1. i got the game on Saturday evening and beat THE WHOLE GAMEon Monday after school. 2. their is a lot of gross and mean things in this game. Like nose picking and killing animals But the characters are great the game is a blast and if you think you can handle weird stuff then I would buy it. A wario touched obsessor probably thinks nose picking in games is not gross 4 stars (Good, but suffers from the same problems as the rest of the series) - Wario Ware: Touched (2005.) The second game in the Wario Ware series. INTRODUCTION: In 2004, Nintendo released one of the strangest video games they had ever released in their extensive game-making career - Wario Ware, Inc. Mega Microgames! The game was, essentially, a collection of simplistic minigames which all formed together into something that was surprisingly excellent, and definitely one of the Game Boy Advance's sleeper hits of that year. It's not surprising that Nintendo wanted to try their hand at this formula again! And one year later, they did. In this year, they released two new games in the series - Touched, for the DS, and Twisted, for the GBA. Read on for my review of the former game. OVERVIEW: Wario Ware Touched is a single-player game for the Nintendo DS, which is comprised of a number of mini games. The game is for the DS, and thus, heavily integrates the touch screen into the gaming experience. REVIEW: The Wario Ware series is one of the strangest things to happen to the Nintendo universe in a long time. But the amazing thing is that it's actually one of the best! Let's take a look, and see where this game succeeds and fails alike. -THE GOOD: Once again, Nintendo has succeeded in creating a game that is ridiculously simplistic, but at the same time, is extremely fun to play. Like other Wario Ware games, this one consists of back-to-back mini games. And the gimmick here is a little different than the ot...

The Swordman-s Companion- A Manual for Training With the Medieval Longsword

5 stars (Excellent) - As a long-time researcher and historical fencer, I can say that this is simply the best non-monographical book on the longsword out there. Guy Windsor is a first-rate teacher, and this comes across plainly in his writing and in the organization of this book. The book provides enough historical material to demonstrate where the original concepts and techniques can be found, then expands into clearly-defined lessons from a teacher with considerable experience. Many of the common mistakes are identified and advice is given on how to avoid them or correct them. Actions are explained in terms of martial soundness and correct body-mechanics. Illustrations are numerous, clear and relevant. Furthermore, Guy's writing style is dynamic and interesting, making the Companion a good read as well as a useful training tool. A high-quality, informative and well-written book that I heartily recommend to all serious students of the late-Medieval sword-arts. 5 stars (A great book for those who want to learn real swordsmanship) - I just got my copy of this book, and I am suitably impressed. This book is mainly based on the Italian masters, notably Fiore di Liberi's work. And as such, the terms given here for the guards and cuts are in italian. Initially described in english as well, but italian after that. Now, this may be confusing for those who are beginners or non-italian speakers. More on this in a minute. I like the fact that this book contains plenty of one and two person exercises to work through, illustrated with actual photos that are clear and easy to follow. This book also includes warm ups that should be done before practice begins, and some great exercises on body mechanics. You may wonder what being able to keep your balance on one foot has to do with swordsmanship, especially doing this with your eyes closed (Harder than it sounds!). Nothing, and yet, everything. Proper balance, footwork, and body mechanics are essential to good technique, a...

WinFax Pro 10 0

3 stars (Not So Bad...At Least For Me) - I have read all of the reviews on how terrible Winfax is supposed to be and I'll admit it does have its share of problems. But, what software doesn't. I have just purchased a new HP Pavilion ZD8000 Window Media Center PC and I installed WinFax 10.0 and I have not had the problems others have had. Then again, I am only an occasional WinFaxer. Perhaps my opinion will change once I get more involved and regularly use the product. That being said, the only real problem that I have is that it doesn't take advantage of my DSL connection. We have sent faxes over a DSL line successfully, so it is possible to do. We have installed the software the 1st time, so it is possible to do. We have been up and running in minutes, so that too is possible to do. I am a very seasoned computer programmer and can probably solve most software problems, but I simply have not had to fix this software. That's my two cents worth.... The great Kabudah has spoken! 1 stars (Do Not Buy This Software) - I am running Windows XP and I purchased the 10.2 pack, which, after installing, failed to work. Symantec offered no help, despite spending about three hours searching their website and calling. When I called someone finally answered the phone after endless phone menu's but gave me another number to call. Then, after many more phone menu's I was connected with another person who was barely audible and who hung up on me. Basically, there is no help from Symantec online, or by phone. (There is a charge for the phone call, but I never got that far before he hung up, thank goodness.) The program never worked and even the tech person I use for my business could not get the program running correctly. Unless you enjoy spending hours of wasted time getting no where, I would not recommend buying this product. If given the option, I would have rated this zero stars, because it does not even deserve one. I hope this review saves someone else the expense...
