Rising Tide- The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America

5 stars (Of Man and the River) - If you thought Hurricane Katrina packed a devastating whallop to the Louisiana and Mississippi Coast, wait until you read this engrossing story of the 1927 Great Mississippi Flood which inundated the entire Misssissippi Delta. Barry does a great job of providing the background for the levee system which has repeatedly failed the Delta because beauracrats were unwilling to bend to any common sense when it came to handling the mighty Mississippi. They insisted on building their levees higher and wider, channeling the river into a raging torrent come high water. The Army Corps of Engineers chose to cling to outdated manuscripts rather than study the situation first hand, which was repeatedly asked for by civil engineers who saw a monumental crisis in the making. Barry makes a good case for Eads' proposal for jetties in deepening the mouth of the Mississippi and creating a greater flow of water into the Gulf of Mexico. While this was done primarily to increase navigation into and from the Port of New Orleans, jetties would have made a lot more sense than a system of levees that essentially served to choke the river. To make matters worse the Corps systematically closed off spillways and refused to cut canals even after the 1922 flood should have served as a warning call. But, Barry treats the rising Mississippi as a metaphorical tool as well, describing Jim Crow South in intimate detail, contrasting the bigoted paternalism of the Percy family with the malignant growth of the Ku Klux Klan, and its impact on Southern politics. It is a well written book that focuses mostly on the Mississippi Delta, the cultural and economic battle for this prized acreage and the river that would ultimately engulf the region. 5 stars (Prophetic and lively read) - John Barry's superb RISING TIDE can be viewed through many prisms, but obviously today, we will all see it through post-Hurricane Katrina eyes. Let it first be said that Barry is a superb ...

Night

5 stars ( Night ) - Night Author Elie Wiesel Have you ever been tortured to the point when you just want to give up and die? Well, Elie and his father have been through this experience. Elie is a young fifteen year old teenager who would battle for his right in any situation. He also lives with his father. He was born in a little town called Sighet in Transylvania and lived a modern life until the Nazis came to Elie's home town and started to gather up the jews. They were put into trains that were so crammed that you couldn't even sit down. No one had a clue where they were going. They then arrived at a concentration camp called Auschwitz. The sight of seeing children being thrown into the crematories made Elie think...is my life going to end here? Elie and his father were treated like rats and lived off of every scrap of food possible. All of a sudden Elie and his father had to change camps and head out to another concentration camp called Buchenwald. They had no transportation. The officers forced them to run nonstop to get there. Elie's father tried to give up and die in his sleep, but Elie kept trying to pursued his father to keep running until they could reach the camp. People were being trampled and many were freezing to death from the cold. No one cared, no one bothered to give any food, and the only thing Elie could think about was is there a way to survive? Or is this the end? Find out yourself and read the heart stopping thriller called Night (You won't believe what you will read!). Night is my most favorite book of all time, even though it is the most disturbing book that I have ever read. If you are not into the type of books that have love stories, drama, and happy endings I suggest you read this book. If you did not like The Diary of Anne Frank it would be better to read this book because it really explains how cruel the Nazis were to the poo...

Man-s Search For Meaning

5 stars (inspiring and useful) - For me, an incredibly useful perspective on suffering. I would even go as far as to say paradigm shifting. You should especially read this if you are succeptible to depression. 4 stars (Insight into search for meaning) - This book is cited often by diverse authors providing life guidance on building a purposeful life filled with meaning. I wanted to read the original myself to see what the fuss was about. There is much here. 5 stars (Just read it.) - It isnt a lengthy book, but it's a great book. It's a book you will read again. It's a book you will read before you go to sleep at night and again when you wake in the morning. If you think your life is rough and not worth living this book WILL give you hope. Yes, it's that good. ...

Salonica- City of Ghosts - Christians- Muslims and Jews- 1430-1950

4 stars (History Matters) - Mazower captures in remarkable ways the history of Salonica, a town which is today in northern Greece. At the same time many events that took place at Salonica were repercussions and optics on European and Middle Eastern history as a whole. For very different reasons at different epocs, Salonica found itself responding to events far beyond its shores. In the fifteenth century it became the home of many Jews expelled from Spain. After centuries under Ottoman rule, in the twentieth century it saw the return of Greek rule and then the forced removal of its large Jewish population under German occupation. The story of Salonica is an illustration of the ways in which a single physical place has seen whole communities come and go, typically under tragic circumstances. The book reminds us of how difficult it is for human beings with different beliefs and ideologies to live peacefully together. For many centuries this was achieved in Salonica, but then something changes and persecutions and emigrations follow. Mazower tells these stories without any attempt to prove a thesis about inter-faith or even human relations. There are interesting individuals but no heroes or saints. Communities do good things and do bad things. It is a story of many human lives that would otherwise have been buried with the communities that over the years have been forced to leave and officially left out of the city's history. After reding it Salonica will be on my next trip to Europe! 5 stars (Thessaloniki Explained) - The Mazower book is superb. It makes the city come alive with a careful and thorough review of the city's history. Its ethnic composition was fascinating to explore. His footnotes put me on to two other books which added even more to the story of this intriguing city. He made some of what I have felt on my several visits become clear. Although he writes in a precise chronological manner, he inserts up-to-date observations which make the mosaic of T...

Devil In The White City

5 stars (How Could We Have Not Known This Had Happened?) - A mass murderer with victims possibly numbering in the hundreds in the midst of the World's Fair of Chicago in the early 1900's? A fascinating read. A mostly historical perspective of a huge (almost impossible) undertaking (not just a World's Fair, but an entire self-sustaining city!), with suspense and horror sprinkeled throughout as we learn about the suave, diabolical Dr. Holmes as he lured his unsuspecting, charmed victims to their death. I enjoyed learning about this part of Chicago history. I enjoyed every page! 4 stars (Wondefully Written) - I grew up in Chicago in the 1940's and was always fascinated with Chicago's history, and how it evolved - both struggles and triumphs. My Grandmother was born in the early 1880's. She remembered the "Columbian Exposition" as the most magical thing she had ever experienced. Anyone who has any history in Chicago will love this book. I know it is considered "history," but it is written within a novel's contexts, and is very readable and enjoyable. I hope that Erik Larson will give all of us insight into other historical occurrences as well. 5 stars (Wonderful History lesson) - Such a great way to learn a piece of American History. The book read like fiction, but it was all true! I'm amazed at the amount of time and research that went into this book. It was the monthly book club selection. Great choice!!! ...

Art Deco- 1910-1939

5 stars (The greatest book on Art Deco!) - This book is an absolute triumph. First, it is positively gorgeous - the images just leap off the pages. Second, the essays are more in-depth, engaging, and informative than any other book I've found on the subject. This book discusses every facet of Art Deco as well: it explores the origins at the Paris Exhibition in 1925, goes through the influence in East Asia, Latin America, and South Africa, not to mention Europe. A great chapter on Deco in Hollywood; also explores all of the sources, iconography - and all of this on top of covering every aspect of the movement - ceramics, jewelry, fashion, architecture, glass, photography, graphic design, bookbindings, travel and transport, and so so much more - with stunning visuals. A fantastic read, a great resource, a beautiful work, and an absolute MUST for anyone interested in the subject! Well worth the money, and a fantastic addition to any library. Highly recommended! 5 stars (The first and last word on Deco.) - A sumptuous coffee-table book of this exuberant art style and I think it could well become the standard book on the subject. The forty essays are divided into four sections, Sources and Iconography, 1925 Paris Exhibition, Spread of Deco and finally Deco World, and I liked the way, especially in Sources and Iconography, that the authors explain how various art styles were moulded into deco art which culminated in the very influential 1925 Paris show. I thought the last two sections were a fascinating coverage of how Art Deco spread around the world, mainly as architecture and fashion, though in Europe also as a fine art style. In North America, it influenced a huge range of commercial products. Perhaps this was the only art form that was truly democratic in that it was available (as streamlining) to be seen or bought on any Main Street across the Nation. The design and printing are excellent. Many of the photos, especially color, are presented whole page, the ...
