Physics for Scientists and Engineers 3rd Edition

5 stars (Physics Student) - This is a great book for Calculus base physics. It offer in-depth explaintion of the theory and how it derive a theory. The problem at the end of each chapter are challenging and encourge the student to work at it in able to solve it. Also, after doing these problem, it a guarantee that you will at least learn something. 2 stars (blehhh) - Like the other reviewer from UCB, I had to use Giancoli for two semesters of physics, and this book did not help me one bit. All it did was make me feel completely helpless. The explanations of most concepts are pretty clear and concise. The problem is when you get to the problems. Most of the practice problems at the end of the chapters are much harder than the level at which the actual text covers the physics. As another reviewer said, this book may be good if you've taken a rigorous Honors Physics or AP Physics class in high school, but not everyone has. If your high school only offered a regular college-prep physics class (non-calculus based at that), you will suffer from all the knowledge that it is assumed you can automatically derive or figure out (as if it were common sense) on your own. I highly regret not looking for other, better, physics textbooks at the time I took my introductory physics classes. I urge anyone who doesn't feel like they already have a good solid background in calculus-based physics, and is assigned this book, to go and find one that explains things in a more in-depth way. Physics is all about the problems, if you can't do the problems then you're screwed in the class. This book does not help you figure out how to solve problems. 5 stars (well written) - Great book, well written, great organization, one of the best books for classroom. Very good and practical examples. You'll actually see how knowing a little bit of physics can help you understand your usage of daily appliances, and you can participate in intelligent converstaions without sounding silly! ...

5 stars (View From a Math Tutor) - I have tutored math for over 20 years and Bittenger's book is one of the best I have ever seen for taking pre-algebra students from the basics to the complex. His examples are clearly laid out, easy to follow, and they lay a solid foundation for higher math learning. This book's concepts will definitely help high school students prepare for the SATs. 5 stars (Great self study book.) - I'm 38 and am a home schooler and to get back into math mode, I chose this book. I did every odd problem and some of the systhesis problems. You will learn the material if you take the time. I spent around 14 or 15 months to get through the book. The program is excersises and review. Constant review is huge plus. I recommend you get the solutions manual from addison wesley. I've just started Marv's et.al.. Precalculus book and then will go onto calculus. I'm enjoying the math. Much more then in high school. My son and I sit down and learn together. He says "get your book" and lets do math. The key to his desire to do math is because he see's his dad doing it. I've seen many other books and this tops them all. 5 stars (Makes it easy-free tutoring, & web site practice problems!) - This book is not all you get. The book itself is great. But the additional FREE helps which come with the book assure that even the most inept math student can learn algebra. These helps consist of, but are not limited to:1) free tutoring via phone,email,& fax; 2)free practice problems via internet website. Other supplemental materials consist of: Videotapes, Tutorial Software, and a solutions manual. These are all available for the student. I haven't even mentioned the benefits that a classroom teacher has through the Instructor Supplements. He explains concepts in an extraordinarly thorough and direct way, with a lot of great worked out examples and terrific exercise sets that increase student knowledge and insight regarding the concepts and computations. Having used both this book and Blitzer's other PreCalculus text, I can honestly say that his books for the secondary market put most of the other books out there to shame - there's really just no comparison. If you're a student who really wants to learn math, or a teacher who appreciates great support materials, then you really do have to get this text, as well as Blitzer's other texts, such as "PreCalculus". Statistics for Psychology 3rd Edition

2 stars (Inexcusable!) - I've never come across a textbook with so many mathematical and typographical errors! It was absolutely infuriating! We could never trust what the book gave as a solution to an exercise. If the authors would fix these errors it would be a decent text. 5 stars (Perfect for undergrads and grad students alike) - I was amazed w/how clearly this book explained concepts (as compared with other books/professors). The book also explains the concepts in different ways/perspectives, so that if you don't understand one explanation you're likely to understand the others. The book also has a perfect range of material--complete coverage of Z-scores, t-tests, regression, and ANOVAs; all the way thru concepts like MANOVA/MANCOVA, and multiple regression. Also at the end includes a couple great chapters which give very simple explanations of more complex procedures such as structural equation modeling, causal modeling, factor analysis, etc. By far the best stats book I've read. 5 stars (A great book for the non-statistically minded) - I found this book greatly supportive to a non-statistically minded person such as myself. The authors realise that not everyone feels comfortable with doing statistics and, indeed, actually dread it. Since I need to do a Statistics for Psychology course to continue in Psychology it has been a relief that the main text used has been written to aid the statistically impaired. It is fulled with many mind-easing comments etc. and, with the combination of this book and my lecturer at the University of Canterbury, I am actually learning to enjoy something I never thought I would enjoy. Inorganic Chemistry 3rd Edition

3 stars (Lukewarm chemistry) - M&T was used for the intro. inorganic chemistry course that I TA'd, and I found that while all off the essential inorganic topics are covered the book focuses primarily on symmetry and molecular orbital theory. Truly, it makes MO theory very accessible (a fine preparation to carrying on with Cotton's Chem. App. of Group Theory). I recommend this textbook for courses and individuals focused on developing these areas, but in terms of physical inorganic chemistry, this book is lacking. There is only one chapter spent on main group chemistry, hardly enough space to mention more than a small spattering of information. The solid state chapter is also disappointingly weak. However, in terms of illustrations and ease of readablity, this book succeeds. Overall, while the book does not miss any "essentials," it does little more than skim a large section of inorganic chemistry. 4 stars (1st year inorganic chemistry text) - This was the book used for 5.03 (Inorganic Chemistry I) at MIT for Spring 2004. I thought it was a great book in terms of examples and explanations of point groups & molecular orbital diagrams. A lot of the chapters seemed to be organized such that the essential information was presented first, followed by applications and interesting side notes for each of the topics. This was very helpful when skimming before the final! I also recommend the solution manual!! 4 stars (A good one semester advanced inorganic chemistry text) - It's hard to write an inorganic textbook that will please everybody. In general, there are three different types of undergraduate inorganic chemistry courses offered: 1) One semester Descriptive Inorganic (pre P. chem) 2) One semester Advanced Inorganic (post P. chem) 3) Two semester sequence (post P. chem) Missler and Tarr's text is written for the second audience. 2 stars (Poorly written) - I am using this book in a CCNA semester 1 class. Although it is by Cisco and therefore contains the information they want you to know, it is poorly written. It is as if the original text were 3 times as long, and to shorten it, they had to take out every third sentence, because it does not flow, and concepts are often only half-explained. I am *often* reading it and think "What????" (And I'm fairly certain it's not just me - I have a B.S. and M.S in Computer Science and plenty of real-world computer experience). All in all, I have to say that this is not a high-quality book. Although it's not a substitute for the CCNA material, I really like the book called "Interconnections" by Radia Perlman. 5 stars (An Excellent Companion) - Cisco seems to have made a transition from being a high performance workstation and server supplier to being a supplier of high end networking equipment. It seems like you cannot go into an Internet Service Provider without seeing at least some Cisco equipment. As such, being an authority on Cisco equipment and even more important understanding the Cisco approach to networking is a good start on employment. And the crowning achievement is the Cisco Certified Network Associate certificate. This book is a companion to the on line course.
