Norton AntiVirus 2006

1 stars (Please do not buy this product!) - A friend of mine was having trouble with their PC (computer would reboot during startup continually, relatively new PC). After doing a full HD format, XP reinstall (including all updates) everything worked fine. However, after installing Norton 2006 Antivirus the computer slowed down considerably and after two-three startup / shutdown sequences would begin to reboot during startup again (i.e. never get to the Start menu). I reinstalled XP three times (plus did hardware diagnostic checks). Norton 2006 has to have some bugs in it as XP runs fine until Norton 2006 is installed. I concluded that the problem was Norton as I shut off the AV monitoring through msconfig and the computer worked fine. There were no errors when I installed the product. I did a final reformat etc. but put on a competitor's antivirus product and now have no problems at all. I have been using Norton products for 10 years and been working with PC's for over 20. I had installation issues with Systemworks 2005 but stuck with the product. Once I saw the problems with Norton 2006 (thankfully not on my PC) I took Norton off my own computer and switched to something else (with one month left on my subscription). Don't waste your time with this, there are other options that work. 2 stars (AV 2006 intallation and registration problems) - I have installed it, removed it and re-installed it. It finally said the product was activated. but it was not as the subscription was marked as expired before I began. By calling an 800 number I was finally able to get an unlock key and the activation/subscription issue was resolved. It has never managed to register the product key on their server. I tkeeps sayning cant do that now try again later. If you allow it to scan for some of the things other than virus, worms, adware and spyware, it get hung up in scanning the _Restore directory. Some of their earlier products were more user friendly. 5 stars (Works Like A Champ...

ZoneAlarm AntiVirus 2006 AntiVirus + Firewall

4 stars (NICE TOOL WITH FUTURE POTENTIALS) - In the world of software, efficiency matters. And despite its lesser known name, the "ZoneAlarm Antivirus 2006" package remains one of the most potent antiviral software available today. The news that this supposedly antivirus package comes with an equally effective internet security firewall will gladden the hearts of its users. Quite unlike other newly introduced packages, there are few but negligible bugs in this software. And with its relatively cheap retail price, such a minor issue could be easily accommodated. Twice I have installed this software, twice I was impressed by how smooth the entire procedure ran. Not even the most notable names in antiviral software have produced anything that has positively surprised me in this regard. I experienced zero hang-ups, zero blue screens: and no incompatibility hassles whatsoever, emerged. Apart from the fact that this software slows down system performance, as it runs in the background, there is nothing that I can honestly accuse it of. Even at that, all utility software (including antiviral and firewall ones) are famous for draining performance resources: and this suite did it to a lesser extent when compared to either 'Norton' or 'McAfee'. One more thing aspiring users of this product should note is that you have to deactivate your operating system's firewall, if you intend to use the firewall component of this suite. This last statement applies only to those who are running Windows XP (be it Home or Professional edition). Failure to do this will likely create more conflicts and other related problems. Overall, this is a fine piece of software to use. It silently executes its responsibilities with minimal strain on your hardware. It is an utility programme, which is likely to get better as future editions emerge. ...

Norton AntiVirus 2005 - Single User

1 stars (Can I take back the 1 star...) - This is one of the worst applications that I have ever used. Please do not buy it. I seriously doubt the authenticity of many of the positive reviews. Based on my own experience, conversations with other computer professionals, and my reading of hundreds of online complaints, I suspect that at least some of these are shills for Symantec. I bought a 3-user Home Protection Pack. I am not an amateur -- I develop Windows and web applications for a living. However, I have not been able to successfully install and use this product on any of the three machines that I bought it for. The only fully working copy gave out yesterday for no apparent reason. It just simply quit working. The error message that pops up when I try to start it indicates that I should uninstall/reinstall -- doing so twice has not remedied the situation. The various problems that I have had are too numerous to explore in detail, but they include: - Installation issues (all three machines); - Problems getting the auto-update functionality to work (two of the three machines never did); - The Auto-Protect icon indicates that it is running, but the software will not load at all (one machine); - Persistant false positive, even after running Symantec's removal tool for the supposed infection (one machine); - Missed adware/spyware infections (two of the machines). I am uninstalling Norton and getting something else, probably Trend Micro's AV suite. 3 stars (HAVE USED THIS VERSION FOR 5 MONTHS I HAVE HAD MANY PROBLEMS BUT IS MUCH BETTER THAN THEIR 2006 VERSIONS) - I HAVE NORTON 2005 ON TWO COMPUTERS .I HAVE HAD ERROR MESSAGES LOAD ERRORS AND SEVERAL MACHINE CRASHES BUT THE PROGRAM WORKS GREAT.I NEVER KNOW WHEN NORTON WILL ASK TO VERIFY MY SUBCRIPTION KEYS OR YOUR FREE TRIAL IS UP. I HAVE HAD TO REINSTALL 2005 3 TIMES .YOU MUST USE THEIR REMOVAL TOOL OR YOU MAY HAVE INSTALLATION PROBLEMS WITH REINSTALLATION.I TRIED THEIR 2006 VERSION BELEIVE ME WHAT A DISASTE...

Norton AntiVirus 2005 Home Protection Pack - 3 Users

4 stars (Norton Antivirus purchase) - I like the product. But Norton Antivirus, Symantec did not except my rebate offer and indicated my original receipt which was an Amazon receipt was not valid. I will not purchase from Symantec again. 5 stars (No problems) - I don't understand the amount of negative feedbacks out there, but it seems there are a lot of Symantec/Norton bashers, yet Symantec products (at least virus protection ones) continue to be the best sellers among retailers, computer manufacturers, and large companies. I have been using computers since 1996, by all means a novice, and started out initially with McAfee upon everyone's recommendations. It always seemed to require too much user input, and not knowing much comupter anti virus lingo, I kept having all sorts of problems (Freezing, pop-ups for McAfee sale pitches, errors, excessive prompts for specific actions, and YES viruses, with very poor customer service). When I bought my second computer (IBM) in early 2000, it came with Norton pre-installed, and what a difference! I never had to do anything to the software. It just worked in the background, and never had a problem. I have been a Norton/Symantec fan since. Every year, I purchase and upgrade to the new software, simply because it is free after rebates, instead of paying to renew my subscription. I tried one year the NIS, and it did slow my computer, so I went back to the NAV. We have 3 desktop and 3 laptop computers, running W98, ME and XP. Never had a problem with viruses, and all computers have Norton running just smoothly in the background. Never had any problems with installation, and the current 3 users pack was even easier, because it automatically uninstalled the prior versions (Norton Professional 2003 and 2004). It updates itself automatically, and simply works (you just don't even know it is working). Not one single computer had a virus in over 5 years. I still have my IBM Aptiva, W98, 550MHZ Athlon, and an older 450MHZ Celeron Toshiba...

Panda Titanium AntiVirus 2005

1 stars (Poor Customer Service) - The software hangs up when trying to scan a file. Repeated attempts to get help from tech support resulted only in a string of emails that asked me the same questions over and over. 5 stars (easy to use, works great) - I have used Panda Titanium for the past two years at our small office with 11 PC's. You really can install it and forget about it. Works great and runs invisibly without slowing down your PC. I've used Norton, McAfee, PC-cillin and others in the past and Panda beats all of them by miles. 5 stars (Better than McAffeeor Norton) - I have been using Panda for the past 4 years with none of the incidents described inthe bad reviews. Quite the contrary, Norton and McAfee are so bloated that they will slow down or cause confilcts more often. I use this software on my desktop, a 3GHz XP Pro system running DSL thru a Linksys firewall/router, running ZoneAlarm (free edition) as a software firewall. I also use this on my 2 show laptops (I do computer work for meetings and conferences) both Gateways running XP Pro, and my wife's laptop running Windows Me (soon to be upgraded) all without incident. I have NEVER caught a virus or trojan or worm since running Panda. Also, as I need to shut off all TSR programs (terminate and stay resident) and other unnecessary background software while running a show to make the computer more efficient, Panda is easily shut off, whereas McAfee will turn itself back on randomly after you turn it off, and Norton's bloatware (look in the system startup and see just how many programs it loads. Astonishing!) is near impossible to turn off. I've never needed tech support from Panda, so I can't speak on that aspect. I do freelance tech support building, configuring and repairing PCs and have found that most problems stem from downloading 'free' (beware of anything 'free') software that installs spyware and adware (I use both Spybot and Adaware), and having lots of TSRs, especially unnecess...

eTrust EZ Antivirus 2005

1 stars (completely useless - garbage) - at first this seems like the perfect antirvirus program... cheap, uses up very minimal resources, simple to use.. lifetime subscription for free.. what could be wrong? EVERYTHING. see, the problem isn't that this program can't find viruses.. the problem is IT FINDS THEM AND DOESN'T DO ANYTHING WITH THEM. that's right, it leaves the viruses right there!! how is that useful in any way? i looked in options to make sure it cleaned or deleted viruses, but still the log report would announce to me "(this many) viruses could not be deleted or cleaned." well, thanks for nothing. i'm going to return this and get a real antivirus program. 1 stars (Worse Than a Virus) - I purchased CA's antivirus software because I had read some good reviews. After purchasing I downloaded the most current version. I installed it on one of three PCs in the house. All reasonably new and powerful Dells: 2 running McAfee and 1 running Norton. The first PC is XP Pro. The installation went smoothly, with only one "program must terminate" error that did not seem to affect the installation. I noted that the program was smaller in disk space and in memory footprint. I tested this for a week with only one occurrence of needing to reboot due to some obscure failure (red X over the icon in my system tray). I decided it was good to use and purchased two more licenses to install on the two XP Home machines in the house. This did not go well. Now, I have two machines that are requiring me to completely reinstall Windows. After removing both McAfee and Norton from these two respective PCs, they booted up fine. Then I installed CA eTrust Antivirus version 7.0.6.7 and the problems started. The PCs both would boot to the Welcome screen and then freeze. About 20% of the time when booting in Safe Mode they would finally get all the way to the desktop (after 30 minutes of chunking) only to get a message "Windows must now restart because the remote proced...
