Interior Design Illustrated

5 stars (Great Resource) - I am currently getting my degree in ID, and I think that this resource is invaluable. The drawings are great and they really help with perspectives and rendering. 4 stars (Excellent but abit outdated) - The auther is fantastic, the book is well written otherwise he wouldn't have got the 4 stars, the book covers the subject from A to Z literally speaking, a must have, BUT it is too much outdated. 4 stars (This is a great book for teaching) - Interior Design Illustrated is a pictoral book with easily understood text. This book gives the reader a chance to learn the basics of Interior Design. I recommend this book for any Interior Design school to be used in their course. ...

A History of Interior Design

5 stars (The Wonderful Mr. Pile) - History of Interior Design is great. I study interior design and, without John Pile's books, this wide-ranging subject would have been far more difficult. Studying the subject "history of interior design" would have been such a struggle for me without having this book at my side. I just couldn't find all I needed on the internet. Apart from the high quality paper and excellent images, John Pile has a writing style that gets his point across very clearly. That makes for rapid reading and faster absorption of information. ...

Professional Practice for Interior Designers- 3rd Edition

5 stars (Get It!) - This book reads like a friend whispering all the good advice and secrets of the interior design business in your ear. I wish my Professional Practices class had used this text. It's a lot of information but Christine Piotrowski truly takes you by the hand and lets you know what you need to prepare for in a budding interior design business as well as how the interior design business is done in general. I will be referencing this book again and again. A huge thank you and bravo to Christine Piotrowski 5 stars (Must Have!) - This book was used for both Business Practice For Interior Design & Sales and Marketing. I had no need to consult any other source. "This is a great book" THANKS.. 5 stars (Fantastic!) - Outstanding, fabulous, fabulous book. Extremely helpful to me in starting my own firm. Well written. Let-s Ask Michael - 100 Practical Solutions for Interior Design Challenges

5 stars (WONDERFUL!) - whoever gives this a so-so review is downright silly. This book is absolutely wonderful! for people who know nothing about design as well as design students. There are loads of wonderful ideas. 5 stars (Let's Ask Michael : 100 Practical Solutions for Interior Des) - An interior designer and the host of Home and Garden Television's Designing for the Sexes, Payne answers questions he has received as a result of the design guidance he gives on his show. Although the show's premise is to get couples to compromise on their design preferences to create mutually satisfying room d?#cor, here he primarily solves individual design challenges. Payne answers questions concerning every room of the house-bedrooms, bathrooms, dining rooms, kitchens, hallways, home offices, guest rooms, and libraries-and he illustrates his advice with color photographs. His practical, down-to-earth approach to design recommends this book for public libraries of any size. 5 stars (MIchael Answers With Inspiring Decorating Ideas) - Our TV fav host and ID does a neat thing: he answers emails and the publishes them with his answers and graphics. The show is really Michael's wonderful personality and design flexibility. Here it shows in advice on all rooms from kitchen to bath to living room to bedroom to dining room to family room and all others. His adept touch is in them all, such as this suggestion in regards to breathing new life into stale furniture on a tight budget: "have it professionally painted." It's answers like this that endure this guy to us in HGTV's audience. The index here is critical, since it cross-sections his answers not just by room, but by style, by topic e.g. wall color, by furniture piece, etc. 100 of them with good color shots and sketches and Michael. Only thing wish he'd included was a recommended bibliography for us who would like to go deeper. ...

Interiors- text with Design CD-ROM

4 stars (For the price a good book) - I bought the book form my interior design class. It is an older version and missing a few pages that the new version has, but I have been suprised at how similar the books are. I am glad I didn't pay the $80 for the new one. 5 stars (Thorough and Educational) - Interiors is a complete review of the interior design process. It covers lighting, furniture, fabric, wall treatments, and more. What makes this book so versatile is it's flexibility in being able to be used by someone interested in the profession, as well as those just casually interested in design. If you're building a new home, redecorating your current home, or interested in exploring the profession this book will prove incredibly helpful. It will give you the vocabulary and the how-to for going about a number of design problems. I would actually recommend the newer addition (which is more up-to-date), but can't write the review in that space yet. 5 stars (Interiors:An Introduction) - We are using this book in the interior design class. I think it's good textbook for me. I can learn history of interior by this book. ...

Move Your Stuff- Change Your Life - How to Use Feng Shui to Get Love- Money- Respect and Happiness

5 stars (GOOD CONDITION & ON TIME) - THE BOOK WAS NEW & THE SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT. I WILL CERTAINLY BUY FROM THEM AGAIN. 5 stars (My second favorite FS book so far) - With Handbook of FS by Lam Kam Chuen and Lillian Too's Irresestible FS Magic makes a trio I want to come back to again and again. And the trio I can actually use! I lent it to several friends and they all loved it, understood it and could put it to use immediately. I recommend. 5 stars (Learn how to feng shui) - This is easy to read and understand and most things are covered. A couple of things are not quite covered, like staircases, but for the most part this book is fun, useful, and very easy to implement. ...

French by Design

3 stars (Should you buy French By Design?) - I just did. The homes & rooms featured in this book indicate that money is no object and these homeowners want you to know it. Subtlety is non-existant. Rooms are very "we had a decorator & we spent a LOT". Most items looks too new, too ruffled, smocked, tucked and otherwise adorned. HOWEVER, if you can get past the pictures & READ THE TEXT- Phillips has a lot to say that is excellent. She lists sources & frequently shares fascinating comments on everyday details of French style (who knew about brass hardware vs brushed nickel?). If you read; buy it. If you look only at photos, don't! Charles Faudree is much better in the genre in my opinion. 5 stars (Beautifully presented.) - Another of Philips' beautiful French decorating books. Homes presented in this book, as with her other books are high end showing us the sumptuous fabrics, and lovely French furniture she specializes in. Homes shown are mostly mansions, not the average house. Good coffee table book. 5 stars (Brilliant, Great Sense of Design, a Visual Delight) - Not unlike all of Phillips' books, this book is a masterpiece of European syle and design. No detail is left unnoticed. The furniture, fabrics, antiques, architecture, artwork, and carved stone are each carefully considered and beautifully photographed. Every page is a visual delight. I cannot recommend it highly enough! ...

Construction Drawings and Details for Interiors- Basic Skills

5 stars (Excellent Reference Book) - I have many years of architectural drafting experience. Although this book says "Basic Skills" on the cover, it is much more than basic. It's an excellent reference book, covering everything that is needed for interior design drafting: from line weights to scale, dimensioning, plans, elevations, sections, checklists, furniture and finish schedules, contract documents, and the list goes on. I highly recommend this book for students of interior design and practising designers alike. ...

Residential Lighting - A Practical Guide

5 stars (A lighting technique that works!) - I've read a few other lighting books over the years but found that Whitehead's approach is superior for creating moods in rooms. My wife and I prototype interiors in our home and the results from "A Practical Guide" have been outstanding. We move and change the lighting with temporary luminaires and various wattages to explore the various possibilities before using them in real designs for clients. Beware - after buying into his concepts you will be frustrated by the lighting almost everywhere you go. - jim 5 stars (A Little Light Reading!) - As a Design Instructor and Lighting Professional, I can attest that Randy Whitehead's book is an invaluable asset to both the beginning design professional or the savvy client. Photos, diagrams, intelligent definitions-high light the the text. The good humor and obvious talent that Randy Whitehead exhibits makes this book an enjoyable and easily accessible resource. As a design instructor, I have found earlier examples of this author's books to be a dynamic addition to lecture presentations. It would be a great addition to any library. 5 stars (A Client's/Homeowner's Perspective) - As a homeowner who has been through two major remodels in the past five years, and who has had the good fortune to work with Randall Whitehead on the lighting design and installation for both projects, I read Mr. Whitehead's most recent book from at least two key perspectives: * an extremely satisfied client of and collaborator with Randall Whitehead on two major projects; and * a homeowner who has learned the value of outstanding lighting design and what that brings to the totality of the home One of the key elements that distinguishes Randall Whitehead from other lighting designers with whom I am familiar is his ability to quickly put himself inside the mind of the client in a way that immediately allows the entire design project to be collaborative rather than dictatorial, for lack of...

Interior Design Visual Presentation- A Guide to Graphics- Models - Presentation Techniques- Second E

4 stars (leighbeec) - For the novice designer, this is fab! It covers the basics with great examples. It's loaded with "How to's", from orthographic drawings, floor plan drawings , presentation boards to resumes! This book is a keeper. 3 stars (very well organized) - I am a third year interior design student and I bought this book to help me develop my portfolio. I found it to be very concise and organized. It provides a good overview for a lot of the things we have learned. This book is not so much a reference as it is a filler for industry shortcuts and tips that may have been over looked in class. 5 stars (Great Book!) - This book has a bit of everything I was looking for. techniques, lots of color renderings to review, shadowing techniques, etc. I am currently an interior design student and am using the book to help me with my color rendering and presentation techniques. In fact, my instructor reviewed the book and has requested the book be the textbook for the presentations class in our department next semester. This is the best book I've located so far. ...

Color- Environment- - Human Response

5 stars (Excellent Book- Very Helpful) - This is an excellent book. It's very interesting and was the first book of it's kind that I have read. I gives color and light suggestions for different environments such as schools, office spaces, etc. It gives detailed scientific information about why these colors and types of light are good to use in these environments that is easy to understand. I think this book is a must have for all interior designers who care about the effects the environment they design will have on the people that will be in it! 5 stars (Good Enough I'm Looking for the Author) - Help! My cousin in Brazil is trying to contact the author of this book. The letter he sent was returned to him as the address being no good. He had gotten the address out of the back of the book. Does anyone know how to contact the author? ...

Interior Lighting- Fourth Edition

2 stars (Not Good Introductory Textbook Material ) - This is a required book for an introductory lighting class I'm taking. Since we are solely relying on this book and it isn't supplemented with lecture material, I find that, without familiarity with lighting terminology and concepts, it is very difficult to understand -- very cryptic with the seemingly overused language of the field. While the author may be very knowledgeable, I feel the book is not very well written and the target audience is, perhaps, not intended to be, essentially, the layman. I don't find the organization of ideas and concepts to be clearly laid out or communicated well and, as they unfold, and I come to understand what the author is trying to say, wonder why it was made so difficult -- is that all he means, geesh and why didn't he tell me that earlier. It would be easier to understand the general concept of things first, even in plain English perhaps, and then go on to a more technical description to learn the language of the field and get the details. Just seems to make simple things very complicated, especially with the language, flow of ideas, and phrasing. I also find a lot of the graphic figures and photo examples need some clarification or more details. A picture's supposed to be worth a thousand words, not be cryptic and time-consuming to understand. Sorry, I would not recommend this for students who are not primed first. Especially the younger ones. 5 stars (Great teacher) - While I was studying Interior Design at Parsons a number of years ago, I had Gary Gordon as a Lighting Design Instructor. He was by far one the best teachers that I had. He is very knowledgeable and has the unique ability to easily communicate the many aspects of both design and lighting. I highly recommend any publication he has authored. 4 stars (Very good book for novices.) - The book begins with an inspirational and somewhat simplistic insight into lighting design. Simply as a study of li...

Casa California - Spanish-Style Houses from Santa Barbara to San Clemente

5 stars (Absolutely gorgeous) - I have been a Santa Barbara resident for most of my life and I love seeing our local architecture featured in this book. My wife is an interior designer and frequently references the book. Not only is it suited for design and architecture professionals but also for the layman with and appreciation for design. Sven Klein - Santa Barbara, CA 5 stars (fantastic book for both professionals or coffee table) - Beautiful pictures depict romantic spaces with clear details, they helps me as an architect to re-create the Spanish living environment with many examples from different projects. The 20 houses in this book are gorgeous and inspiring -whether you are looking for ideas or merely relax reading. This is not a book showing only pieces of details for decorator use, it's an awesome architectural book as well as a perfect collection for my coffee table. 5 stars (A MUST!) - One of those books that is just full of great images of the Spanish Revival/Moorish style architecture of So. California. While not heavy on text, this book is a very important visual reference for designers, etc. who want to see how it used to be done. Many photos are of the interiors, but most are of the gardens. If interested in the glazed Malibu tiles seen throughout the book, check out "Ceramic Art of the Malibu Potteries: 1926-1932" by Ronald L. Rindge. ...

The Measure of Man and Woman- Human Factors in Design

4 stars (HUMAN FACTORS) - I AM A BIG FAN OF THE AUTHOR, AND HAVE USED HIS WORKS IN THE PRACTICE OF MY WORK MANY TIMES, THE BOOK, IS GOOD WITH MANY PRACTICAL EXAMPLES, BUT SADLY DOES NOT SEEM TO TELL ME ANYMORE THAN I ALREADY KNEW. ....I WAS HOPING FOR MORE. THE BOOKLET NEEDS UPDATING. SUPERB THOUGH AS A REFERENCE BOOK. 3 stars (great reference - cd is pretty worthless) - this book is a great reference for those who deal in any way with the human form. i, for example, am a 3d character animator and this book is perfect for nailing correct human proportions and visualizing range of motion. however, the accompanying cd is basically an advertisement for ErgoForms, the autocad version of the drawings in the book. only the 1% man drawing (the smallest average male figure)is included on the cd, which is pretty useless for what i need. if the book weren't so expensive i'd give it a four star rating. i thought i was getting more on the cd to warrant the price. 4 stars (Very useful, but use with care) - This is the easiest to use and probably most comprehensive book of human measurement, in my opinion. The data provided in this book is of extreme value to anybody designing anything that physically interacts with human bodies. This is the only complete source of anthropometric data, that I know of, for children of virtually every age range. However, some of the extrapolated data in the book is impractical for real use. For example, children's furniture dimensions recommended by this book are generally too small as they appear to be based upon exact proportions of adult recommendations. This is inappropriate because children's bodies and minds are not exact scale models of adult bodies. Overall, though, I still recommend this book highly, but also recommend very careful use of it. ...

Successful Restaurant Design

5 stars (A Must Read) - With 27 years of restaurant experience I know the importance of design to the success of a restaurant. What is often overlooked, however, is that the kitchen and dining spaces have to work together. The authors of Successful Restaurant Design are the first to point out the importance of a holistic approach to restaurant design. Their insights into the design process are a must read for anyone planning a new restaurant or renovating an existing facility. The chapter of interviews offers readers design tips from leading designers and restaurateurs. And the case studies offer a straighforward way of understanding simple solutions to complex issues. This book belongs in the library of every restaurateur and designer interested in keeping up with front and back of the house design. ...
