DSM-IV Made Easy- The Clinician-s Guide to Diagnosis

5 stars (AWESOME BOOK!!!) - This is an AWESOME book. The case vignettes are extremely helpful, and the book is written so that it is easy to read. I HATE "textbook" type books, and this book isn't like that at all. It really does help to clarify some of the diagnoses in the DSM, which can be quite confusing even when someone has used the manual for years. I've used this book a lot already, even though I've only had it about a month. It's helped me tease apart some details and observations to make what I think are more accurate diagnoses with some of my clients. Purchase this book and you will NOT be sorry!! 4 stars (A practical explanation of the DSM-IV) - This book provides a practical explanation of the "DSM-IV" that will appeal to anyone who wants a thorough, simplified description of this complex book. I'm only giving it four stars because I don't think it provides an explanation of the latest changes made in the "DSM-IV-TR". The book will nonetheless appeal to nearly anyone seeking to improve their grasp of psychiatry, not just psychiatrists in training. Avery Z. Counseling the Culturally Diverse- Theory and Practice

5 stars (Counseling the Culturally Diverse: Theory & Practice) - Sue & Sue have revised their book with wonderful results. This time they include a section "Clinical Implications" in each chapter, this adds to the information and helps with the teaching of this necessary subject. As usual Sue & Sue are thorough and thoughtful in their presentation. They also include the notion of Organizational Culture as a needed subject of study. I highly recommend this book for any clinican and professor who works in the field of psychology. Dr. Gabrielle M. Guedet, Ph.D., MFT 4 stars (Good Book, some problems with it.) - This was required reading for a class I was taking in multicultural issues. It was very interesting but it was hard to read parts of it because of the nature of confronting our biases that the book addresses. I did have some issues with the way the book approached discussing the role of white people in society. It was almost as if the authors wanted me to feel bad about being white. Overall it was very informative and gave really good examples and implications for clinical use. 1 stars (A Biased Look at Bias in America) - I must add my disappointment to many others who have already posted here. This book is required reading in my masters in counseling course, and I was hoping for something that would provide valuable guidelines to reach across cultures in counseling. Unfortunately, Sue & Sue make it quite clear that the only reaching across cultures to be done is by White Americans. Whites are painted as being responsible for all bias in our country while non-Whites are to be held responsible for nothing. Period. Just because these two authors (or any authors, for that matter) are considered the experts in their field does not mean they are necessarily correct. It is impossible for any human being to approach any subject without bias, yet overall Sue & Sue hold only Whites accountable for recognizing and correcting their biases. At the same time...

First Aid for the USMLE Step 2 CS Clinical Skills Exam

5 stars (first aid cs) - I paid a reasonable amount for the item and and i received it a few days later in great shape.There was no problem whatsoever. 5 stars (Medical Boards Review) - Great help for the USMLE CS. Has a wide variety of cases with differential diagnosis and work up plan for almost every possible case that will be on the test. Definately worth it! 5 stars (Water in the USMLE Desert) - I recently passed the Step 2 CS using this book and I must say that this was not the only reference source I used. The truth is though that it was the only source worth turning to. I bought the Kaplan book along with the FIRST AID but I soon found myself using only the FIRST AID. . It turns out that the Kaplan people have no idea what it takes to help students pass this test( I have known several people who have taken their week long prep course and failed the Step 2 CS exam)......yet the authors of the First Aid do!!! The First Aid has complete and reliable Patient NOTES for almost every scenario you could find on the test....Kaplan's book does not. The scenarios in this book are perfectly made so that you can practice with a friend or loved one.....Kaplan's book was not organized well for this purpose (if at all). In addition, after doing much research (hint, hint), I came to know I was better off using the First Aid to pass. On exam day, it was the book I saw most often in students hands (More so in the hands of American Medical Students than in the hands of IMG's!!). If you are a smart test taker......then you like to pass, to pass you would want to have the tools that the winners are using. For this reason I recommend the FIRST AID as a reliable source for USMLE Step 2 CS preparation. ...

Medical Surgical Nursing- Assessment and Management of Clinical Problems

5 stars (Excellent Medical-Surgical Resource for Nurses) - It took me almost two months to deeply appreciate this book. I must admit that I disliked the book initially, much like several of the other reviewers listed here. However, after one of my classmates in our Nursing Refresher Course raved about the book's nursing care plans, I took a deeper look at the material and was thrilled by the comprehensiveness and timeliness of the information presented. For example, the chapter on Alzheimer's disease and dementia contained information about diagnostic tests that is often only found in neurology textbooks intended for physicians. When I worked for a neurologist, the only resources I had for very specific diagnostic studies were the Mayo Clinic's diagnostic studies manual and the physician's neurology textbooks, some of which were several years old. Overall, I believe this book serves as an excellent resource for pathophysiology, diagnostic studies, and nursing care plans. The tables and illustrations are beautiful, user friendly, and highly informative. Each chapter is organized according to the nursing process, which focuses on critical thinking and problem solving. Don't delay in adding this textbook to your nursing library. This textbook is a great resource for nurses working in hospitals, doctors offices, clinics, wound care, patient education, and public health nursing. There is also an excellent section in the chapter on emergency care situations that covers agents of bioterrorism, which is very useful to nurses working in trauma centers and the military. 2 stars (and thus the nursing students speak. . . . ) - I just graduated from the second largest nursing school in Texas and we used this textbook for two semesters, (the school has a contract to use only Mosby textbooks). 2 stars (Disappointing, again and again...) - I am a clinical psychology graduate student, and every time I turn to this book for help related to interpretation--what a part of the test means or can tell us about a person--I am sorely disappointed. It is terribly psychometric and formal, giving facts about the test but few clues for what to do with it; even something as simple as a useful description of one of the index scores is lacking. There are reference tables included, but I have found even those more difficult to locate when I need them than seems necessary. Frustrating... 5 stars (Clear and user-friendly yet sophisticated) - This is a gem of a book. I assigned it for the grad students in my intellectual assessment course and both they and I found it to be very helpful and easy to use. The format of the book makes it very user-friendly and unintimidating. There are a lot of boxes and highlighted text that help the reader to find what he or she is looking for quickly. This book covers administration, scoring, and interpretation and provides numerous helpful tips for beginners on common errors. The approach to interpretation provided in this book is a pared-down and slightly modified version of the method described in Kaufman's book Intelligent Testing with the WISC-III (an excellent book with a great deal of information on interpreting the WISC-III). Kaufman and Lichtenberger take the guess work and estimation out of interpreting the significance of various scores. This approach is based in the scientific method (assume nonsignificance unless you have a compelling reason, based on the test data, to believe that the variations in scores on the test protocol are unlikely to have resulted by chance). This approach is very helpful in giving students an understanding of how much variation in test scores can result from test error, and brings the "science" back into test interpretation. Discard I hate u don't leave me and seek out this treatment.Then this book will someday be reviewed by u. 5 stars (Finding What Works) - Knowing how to access a place inside to relieve symptoms of long standing illness is pure genius, and this book is the road map to spiritual identification and release of problems, just by learning how to relax and let the spirit do it's job. I love it. 4 stars (Wouldn't it be nice.....) - That's the beginning of an old Beach Boys' song and maybe a good response to the fine research and development of what is called "dialectical behavioral therapy." It's a fine paradigm and tacitly acknowledges that effective therapy is not a one hour a week process, but an on-going one with multi-modal tasks and treatments, and ideally with a therapy team. This book is a great handbook, but NASA publishes excellent handbooks on operating space vehicles: but it doesn't do much good if you can't afford a launchpad (more on this metaphor in a moment). The book clearly lays out the task of the therapist and client. The client should do homework assignments, self-monitoring, reflection, etc. That is all fine and good if one has a research grant and a "captive audience" so to speak, but in the real world, how many people could adhere to such a regimen. As insurance company allowances for mental health severely limit length of treatment and quality of treatment, and with the average American's work week having expanded ten hours per week since the early 1980's (see "The Future of Success"-Robert Reich), who are the clients that will truly benefit from ...

If there is one indispensable text in the field of Clinical Neuropsychology this is it, both for the practicing neuropsychologist and the student. As with the previous editions this text really has no equal in the field. It is the reference I pull most frequently from my bookshelf. 5 stars (New edition out soon) - This is a fantastic reference book. I can't count how many times I have opened it. HOWEVER, there is a new edition coming out in June 2004, so the interested yet frugal buyer might want to hold off for a few months 5 stars (This is an invaluable resource for assessment.) - Neuropsychological assessment provides an invaluable resource for anyone interested in assessment. Lezak has provided innumerable references as well as current information about instruments and their neuropsychological applications. Psychoanalytic Diagnosis- Understanding Personality Structure in the Clinical Process

5 stars (The Best Psychoanalytic Psychopathology Textbook) - This book has really caught on with psychoanalytic teachers because students (beginners especially) are uniformly enthusiastic. This book is readable and comprehensive and every page has a clinically useful insight those beginners or advance practioners can use. What also makes this book so appealing is that it is organized pretty much in line with (Axis II of) the DSM 4 but explains personality types (paranoid, narcissistic, histrionic etc) in classical psychoanalytic terms. Since psychiatry has been taken over by the biologists and since psychology has been taken over by the cognitive-behaviorists, psychoanalysts are lucky to have this presentation of their views. This book summarizes 100 plus year of accumulated psychoanalytic knowledge. Indeed McWilliams does for the turn of the twentieth century what Otto Fenichal did in the mid-l940's -- she has turned out a book that pretty much details the "state of the (psychoanalytic) art" at this point in history. Students will be very taken by McWilliams conversational (but savvy) style. Also the book has a feminist slant and takes what might be called politically correct positions on various aspects of psychopathology in women and this also may play a role in the books appeal to younger students who are suspicious that psychoanalysis is subtly (or not subtly) part of the patriarchal effort to suppress women. For any one who wants to learn about psychoanalysis this is one of about five basic books to start an analytic library. The basic organization of the book is consistent with the more technical, complex work of Otto Kernberg (which McWilliams's summarizes in a far simpler-than-original fashion) and also with the (sadly forgotten) work of Gertrude and Rubin Blanck. Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder

4 stars (Effective for higher functioning, motivated borderlines) - I work in a residential treatment facility for SPMI (all clients also have at least one Axis I diagnosis), and most of our clients have too low of intellectual functioning to grasp many of the DBT concepts. As an intellectual and a practicising Buddhist, I enjoy Linehan's text (especially the focus on Zen aspects: primarily mindfulness). I have encountered many therapists who have succesfully utilized DBT with other client populations. Dr. Linehan has poured years of experience and research into this text. For my clients, I have to significantly alter and simplify many of the tennants of this treatment. If you are reading this, you know that Borderlines are a growing (and very timeconsuming) population of consumers and this text should be in the library of all mental health workers. 5 stars (Fascinating!) - I found this book to be so fascinating and eye opening. Although this book is written for those who TREAT borderline personality disorder, I think it will be very helpful to those who have the disorder. I know it has been a great learning tool for me, and I suffer from BPD. Marsha Linehan shows an amazingly compassionate understanding towards the mind of a person with this disorder. I found myself astonished at her incredible ability to understand the way I think. I think the author is nothing short of a genius. The book is great...but it is complicated and it is not a good book for those who don't enjoy intensely intellectual reading. If you are looking for a book to give you quick facts, this is not the book for you. Mindfulness and Psychotherapy

5 stars (A special collection about nothing special) - As a psychotherapist for 30 years and a mindfulness practitioner for nearly 10 years, I have read a lot of good books and articles on both subjects. " Mindfulness and Psychotherapy " is as clear and helpful in both disiplines as any I have encounted. The editors have done a 'mindful' job in selecting from an array of perspectives. Mindfulness is defined and contextualized for our western psychotherapeutic practice, while also placed in an historical and cultural framwork that informs and enlightens our understanding. Indeed the more philosophical essays are perhaps the strongest pieces in this marvelous compendium. We are reminded that the Buddah saw himself as a physician who sought to diagnose and find a cure for human suffering. Out of his own intimate encounter with suffering, he devised and revised a program that we in western psychological science are just now testing and finding curative-both for our clients and for ourselves. There is much here to be considered by all schools of psychotherapy. Paul Fulton presents an intriguing chapter on Mindfulness as Clinical Training. There are concise chapters on teaching mindfulness skills to clients (even children)with varying disorders, including panic,anxiety, depression, and psychophysiological problems. There is a comprehensive while managable 'Resources for the Clinician" appendix. Andrew Olendzki deserves special mention for his piece on "The Roots of Mindfulness." I had to stop highlighting as each page was yellowed with brightness. If you are a psychotherapist, a meditator, or thinking of practicing either, you will do well to read this wonderful book. ...

5 stars (Fitzpatrick's COlor Atlas & Synopsis of Clinical Dermatology) - Valid information and great pictures. Wonderful, quick reference. 5 stars (EXCELLENT REFERENCE BOOK) - I have used this book throughout 2 years of medical school and it is one of the best dermatology references I have come across. It has also been a quick review for the the path seen with derm since the pictures are so clear and give a good representation of the path. An easy book to skim through before boards as well. 4 stars (Great overview of Clinical Dermatology) - I enjoyed reading this book as a layperson, not having gone to medical school. I have a number of minor skin problems and this book allowed me to differentiate the insignificant ones from the ones I need to pay attention to. I think that this book should be in every household, because a person or parent should know what skin affliction(s) they have and how serious they are before they rush off to the doctor. One thing that should have been elaborated on more is the sub-section on The Nails as Clues to Multiorgan Disease. There are only a few pages of examples of this, yet there are dozens of correlations between abnormal fingernails and systemic disease. The book only gives blantant and graphic examples of serious nail problems and then gives the possible associated underlying disease. It should be expanded to include more "soft sign" nail problems to help doctors make educated guesses about what tests to run. ...

5 stars (An invaluable resource) - The second edition (2001) of this work is indeed an outstanding resource. My daily work includes imaging of sports and musculoskeletal injuries. I find this book frequently useful to supplement deficiencies in my knowledge and experience, and a most useful companion to the second edition (2001) of "Musculoskeletal Ultrasound" by Marnix van Holsbeeck and Joseph Introcaso. Highly recommended as a workbench resource to those interested in imaging of sports injuries. 5 stars (Great book for physical therapists - incredible value) - This is an astounding book. When was the last time you saw a 900+ page hard cover book packed with useful photographs and excellent line drawings...The practical advice in this book is unparalleled. No wonder it is an international best-seller. It arrived quickly and well packed from Amazon. Keep up the good work and thanks! 5 stars (Best Sports Medicine Book I've Ever Used!) - The Second edition of Clinical Sports Medicine is the best reference book I have come across as an athletic therapist and professional fitness and lifestyle consultant. I find it very easy to navigate with great illustrations and information. The references are all very recent and evidence-based so you feel confident in following the authors' recommendations. It is particularly good value at 67 US dollars - most hardcover books of this size are about twice that price. The corresponding website has updated information, including relevant published papers, which I find quite helpful also. These authors have really done a fabulous job of classifying sports medicine information in a logical and easy-to-use format. I highly recommend it to anyone in the sports, fitness, and/or health fields! ...
