The Barbarian Way - Unleash the Untamed Faith Within

4 stars (Oh Yeah!) - Great book for anybody who is burdened for the lost and believes they are being called by God to do more than the Christian next door. I recommend this book to everyone thinking of going into ministry or missions, or for anyone who knows someone already involved. Maybe it will help you understand why they act like they do. Peace! 4 stars (Where Do We Go From Here?) - McManus says it like it is. The church has become a tame, domesticated version of what Jesus seemed to introduce. Nearly every page of this book highlights invaluable concepts for the Christian life as it was meant to be lived. I can relate to the author; I was born and raised to walk the barbarian way--living my faith in a way that demands obedience at any cost. While others have tackled similar subjects, they often times seem to be full of bitterness and rebellion toward the church at large. McManus never gives off that sense of a grudge; instead, he wants to raise the church from its slumber. His "barbarian" way is a way of sacrifice and servitude. This is no mamby-pamby gospel that he's talking about. This is a commitment to a life lived for Jesus, no matter the cost. I loved everything this book had to say. My only complaint is what it didn't say. It didn't give us any practical ways to walk the barbarian way while dealing with the existing church. How do we make these concepts real without seeming divisive? Or, if we are to be divisive for a purpose, how do we go about it with Godly accountability? These are issues I've wrestled with for years. This book encouraged me to keep wrestling, but it failed to answer some of my deepest questions. For those who are still "civilized," this book might change your world. For those still trying to reconcile McManus' concepts with everyday church life, you will be inspired. The question remains, though...Where do we go from here? 5 stars (Insightful and quick read...) - Erwin McManus once again demonstrates how he underst...

The Catholic Faith Handbook for Youth

5 stars (A basic guidebook concerning all things Catholic) - The Catholic Faith Handbook For Youth is a basic guidebook concerning all things Catholic. Intended for young adults, yet accessible to anyone who may be fuzzy on the details of Catholicism, The Catholic Faith Handbook For Youth covers creed, sacraments, morality, and prayer, along with articles concerning information on current events from a Catholic point of view, advice for prayer, profiles of thirty-seven Catholic saints, notes on the history of the Catholic Church, and more. Full-color illustrations pepper this highly readible introduction to a spiritual way of life. Especially recommended reading to share with one's preteen and teenage children in order to teach them more about Catholicism and what it means to live one's life by Catholic religious principles. ...

Plan B- Further Thoughts on Faith

3 stars (I wanted to love this book, but...) - ...I got so weary of the incessant complaining about the current government administration. I would've rather she filled those pages with more stuff about her family, her mom, her son. But every time she turned around she was complaining about the government. It was the same kind of thing that really hurt Tony Hendra's "Father Joe" in my opinion, but here it's much more damaging to the flow of the book. Once I "kinda" got past that it was a great read, but not nearly as memorable as her previous memoir, "Traveling Mercies." Worth a read if you love Annie's writing, and I do, but probably to be missed otherwise. 4 stars (For Lamott Readers, But Certainly NOT For Bush Fans) - Anne Lamott is a writer's writer. And what I mean by that is that she writes on a level most writers would LOVE to make it to. She's easy to read while, at the same time, having a deep message, and a raucous sense of humor. I got hooked on her years ago when I read BIRD BY BIRD, a book that I still refer to often whenever I need to "get real" about my own writing life. I was pleased to learn that these are short memoirs of her life, a collection of short stories. The short story form seems to be making a modest comeback, and I loved the fact that a collection of them made it to the New York Times' list, too. But lets get into the meat and potatoes of the book now ... This is a look at Ms. Lamott's life through her own eyes, and she wears everything on her sleeve, including her disdain for the Bush administration, her dislike of young children, her poor motherhood skills, and her struggles with faith. Examples ... Lamott has to deal with the death of her Alzheimer's mother, pulling the urn that contains her mother's ashes out of her closet. And as she does, she reminisces about the final months of her mother's life: "Her purse was a weight, ballast; it tethered her to the earth as her mind floated away. It was also health and preparedness, filled...

Calm My Anxious Heart - A Woman-s Guide to Contentment

5 stars (Finding Contentment is not easy, but can be accomplished!) - Life throws many curves. When my husband lost his job and I was an at home mom at the time, I was filled with anxiety. This book was my lifeline. I gained strength and courage to deal with daily struggles. I learned to thank God for my situation rather than asking him to change it. Believe me, there were days when I wanted relief and I drew strength from God to keep going. Eventually my husband found another job and we moved closer to family. I love this book and still refer to it often. This book brought me closer to finding contentment during a time in my life when I didn't think that was possible. I looked to God to fill my heart rather than looking to people or situations. 5 stars (Best Book EVER!!!) - Besides my Bible, this is the ONLY book that will reside on my night-stand for the rest of my life. This is the only book I keep copies of to give to people. Truly life-changing. 5 stars (Peace in the Midst of my Storms) - I've been a believer for 14 years, and this book has had a profound impact on my spritual growth this year. Scripturally grounded insights helped me recognize several areas of discontent in my life. I completed the book over the past year with a prayer partner, (one chapter every 2 weeks) and we both want to go thru it again. It is easy to read (I'm often distracted by kids), and the questions caused me to delve further into my "issues" and God's promises. I am buying several copies for friends that will benefit from this as well. ...

After the Affair- Healing the Pain and Rebuilding Trust When a Partner Has Been Unfaithful

4 stars (Rebuilding) - The one good thing I found in this book is the expression of real rage and the range of emotions that are most often felt when the "faithful" one has been betrayed by the "unfaithful" one. I found the book does bring some vlauable insight for the 'unfaithful' to understand the emotions that the 'faithful' does go through. If you are looking to rebuild and restore your life, I recommend the insight this book gives, along with another one called 'Stop Being the String Along' by Barbara Rose which has provided me with life changing answers. Give both books a look, as you will find enlightening answers. 5 stars (After the Affair) - This was a very well written book and very helpful for all kinds of marital problems. 4 stars (My review of After . . .) - AFTER THE AFFAIR is a must read if you are struggling in the aftermath of an affair. It provides such a great insight on why things happen and really challenges to explore your heart and feelings. Another great thing about it is that it does not place outright blame on one party or another, looks at both spouses perspectives of the situation and gives the necessary tools to start rebuilding. Things that other people, family, therapists, etc. may have told you a hundred times but never really made sense become clear with reading this book. It has helped me very much so far and my friends are now reading it as well. Other books I recently read and enjoyed were: THE LOVELY BONES, LUCKY, and THE CHILDREN'S CORNER by Jackson McCrae. ...

Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time- The Historical Jesus - the Heart of Contemporary Faith

4 stars (The future of christianity) - Fundementalists beware, your world may be shaken when you read this intelligent book. Borg is a great scholar and theologian. he has a nice touch and presents jesus in a believable and humble light without taking away the divine aspect. This is an antidote against religious fundementalists who wnat to own Jesus and create an exclusive cult they call christianity. 4 stars (Informative book about the historical Jesus) - I actually decided to read Borg's books after reading some of John Crossan's books where Borg was referenced. I thought the set-up of this book was extremely helpful in illustrating what Borg was discussing. However, I think I had hoped this would be more of a "heart-felt" novel. I understand Borg had to get in all the historical information about Jesus (and he did an incredible job at that) but I had hoped he would speak of Jesus on more of an emotional level. I felt as I was more of an outsider looking in on the life of Jesus rather than a comrade right next to him. And perhaps that is the effect Borg wanted. All in all, a great book with great information. What I found most interesting in this whole book was the link between Jesus and Sophia (wisdom). Borg makes an excellent point to contrast the "Son of God" image of Jesus by saying Jesus was personified as Wisdom- a feminine term in Greek. He does this to stress the many metaphors used when defining Jesus and says we must not take them literally. All in all a great read with great information. 5 stars (Dr. Borg is a gifted writer and loving Spirit filled person) - Before reading Marcus Borg's masterpiece "Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time" I was a self proclaimed agnostic. After reading it I realized I wasn't an agnostic, but an atheist to the God of conservative Christianity. Borg carefully and compassionately details another form of Christianity, a Christianity centered on love of neighbor, love of self, love of intellect and love of the God i...

Velvet Elvis - Repainting the Christian Faith

2 stars (What's all the hype?) - I am about done with "velvet elvis". I give it two stars since it is a good read, but only give it two stars because the author makes it see like what he says is brand new. That he is "repainting" the Christian faith. All you have to do is pick up Philip Yancey (The Jesus I Never Knew, Reaching for the Invisible God, The Bible that Jesus Read, Soul Survivor) who is a much more thoughtful author, or take a sememster at your local seminary and sign up for a hermenuetics class and you will see that what Bell says is nothing new at all. In fact what he says is in the book is the rule of thumb for interpreting scripture... CONTEXT CONTEXT CONTEXT. There you go... nothing new. So for me, when reading this book, I was thinking, Why all the hype? Nothing I haven't heard before... from some of reviews it seems like this book is an ephiphany. I don't know where you have been going to church, but Rob doesn't hold the corner of truth. Now, with that said, it doesn't mean I don't appreciate the book. It is good, and insightful... but again... nothing new here. I liked learning about the women with a hemorrage and the significance of here touching the bottom of the robe of Jesus and that was here proclamation of Jesus being the Messiah. I learned something there. I also liked his take on the superpastor... but again nothing new... nothing that you wouldn't hear at a Promise Keeper Conference. I disagree at times with Rob on the binding and loosing issue. He does leave the Bible much to open ended for me. But I wouldn't call him a heretic. I think I understand what he said regarding the Trinity, but he does say it in an awful confusing way. On one hand he says he affirms the trinity, yet on the other hand he seems to say it's OK not believe it. I do agree the term "trinity" is not found in the Bible. The term trinity was used to describe the God-head, that all three persons are of one essence. Scripture is filled with this message (both OT an...

He has made a difference in my life. 5 stars (Loved the book) - The book was so inspiring. I read it at a time of struggle in my life and it talked to me about letting go of that and moving on. Have faith in God that He had a plan for me to go through these bad times and that I iwll come out of it a better person. Sometimes God needs to teach us when we are not listening, even if that means bringing us to our knees. Joel has a wonderfuul way of teaching us to live God's example - with compassion and love. 5 stars (Your Best Life Now) - This is a great motivational book that helps you in personal and professional growth. Traveling Mercies - Some Thoughts on Faith

4 stars (Let Anne tell her story) - God rescued Anne from a horrible situation. And the thing that broke the ice, so to speak, was something that most church-goers like myself hardly think of as a missionary outreach: the simple act of singing songs of praise to God when we are gathered together. At that point in her life, Anne wasn't much interested in hearing preaching, but the music, and then the love, drew her in. God, in his sovereign will, chose to use a Christian congregation far outside of my "box" to reach Anne. And as the story goes on, we see that Anne also has her God in a pre-conceived box. But I, from my conservative point of view, have to be merciful, remembering what God has brought Anne, and me, out of. Every Christian is in recovery, from all the crap of our past whatever it was. And with God's help, we are growing, learning to love those who don't think like we do, and slowly realizing that God is beyond any of our human boxes: totally awesome, pure, wise, loving, forgiving, patient.... Anne Lamott, I, every Christian, are "traveling" on that road to greater faith, and we are in constant need of God's "mercies." 5 stars (A real conversion experience, in all its messiness) - Salvation and baptism are for people stained with sin, people who have been walking too long on the wrong path. It's amazing that Christians, who know this about salvation, fail so regularly at depicting what a conversion experience is like. Lamott tells a lot of stories and shares a host of ruminations in this book, but her account of her conversion experience is the highlight and is more than worth the price of the book. 5 stars (We're Only Human) - Anne Lamott style of writing and style of life make this collection of essays a delight to read. She's honest, humble, humorous and spiritual-all wrapped up in a nice package. Every person reading this book will identify with the life challenges, questions about faith and quirky happenings that Anne speaks about. She ...
