How To Open Locks With Improvised Tools- Practical- Non-Destructive Ways Of Getting Back Into Just A

4 stars (Open Says Me) - This book is an extraordinary manual for emergency entry procedures. The directions are clear and concise, and the numerous illustrations are very helpful. This book can teach you how to bypass a lock with a bottle of bleach -- who knew ?? 5 stars (Far from easy ....) - I had been trying to open an old S&L moneybox for some time - the lock mechanism is "simple" per this book. Curiosity can be frustrating. I didn't want to spend any money on tools for a one off project (I ended up doing this and bought another book). The intellectual satisfaction was worth it. I'm interested in antiques so may get some payback for learning in the future. (I can now also open simple padlocks, and furniture locks, with an improvised tool in fairly quick time.) The information on getting into a locked car is easy to follow; I knew some of this before buying the book but the process will be easier in future. The stuff on handcuffs also appears straightforward - if you use them for business or pleasure - I don't - this could be worth reading. This is a practical book but hard work and requires practice. Worth reading if you have a real interest in locks and will practice. Not for beginers; I bought this book first then came back to it. 4 stars (Just about there.) - personally im only interested in picking locks and this book does help abit, but it focuses more on bypassing security systems and teaches you how. the paragraphing is kinda compact and so are the instructions and diagrams for me- someone with little technical background. a good read for the hot and lazy afternoon or those boring plane trips. ...

The Not So Big House- A Blueprint for the Way We Really Live

5 stars (read THIS B4 U build your DREAM HOUSE!!!!) - Every real-estate agents SHOULD read this book! BUY and BUILD how we LIVE and not be sold or told as to how we should THINK we should live! GREAT BOOK...food for thought! 3 stars (Good but Not Great) - Although both "The Not So Big House" and "Creating the Not So Big House" are good books with well-thought out concepts, I think you can find better books on the subject. After reading both books, I felt the information rather evaporated, and I was left without some good, basic practical outlines on how to proceed with the house. Fortunately, I came across "The Home Design Handbook" by June Cotner Myrvang & Steve Myrvang, AIA, where at the end of every well thought out chapter, you found a detailed, practical checklist of major issues that needed to be considered before proceeding with your plans. Everything missing in the "Not So big House"(s) was found in this one book, which offered highly useful information. 1 stars (Would have helped to have known .......) - Just having bought an 1887 house in a small southern town, this book was not what I needed. It was well written, beautiful photography and layout, but not within the price range or geographical range. It might have saved me some money if these items of interest to readers had been mentioned. Also - "mission" or "prairie" is not a dominant theme in this area. ...

The Complete Guide to Home Wiring- A Comprehensive Manual- from Basic Repairs to Advanced Projects

5 stars (Excellent book!) - Very pleased! This book is clear and invaluable for teaching you all about wiring - especially if you've never done it before! 5 stars (I did it!) - I compared this book to many others (including the Home Depot book mentioned in another review) before I bought it, and this one seemed to be the most comprehensive, clear and concise for my purposes. I used this book to help guide me through wiring portion in the process of ripping out my entire basement (all the way to the block walls) and rebuilding it. This is a fifty year old house with old "ragwire" wiring, which I replaced as I did the new work. I used the information in the book to do my electrical permit drawings which flew through the permit office with no comments from the reviewer. I installed multiple remote controlled recessed and surface-mounted lighting fixtures and networked the house for computer, video, audio and telephone by following the well-illustrated and clearly written directions in the book. The circuit diagrams proved especially helpful in wiring the multiple-switched and zoned lighting fixtures. All of the work passed the rough-in and final inspections by the electrical inspector without a single comment or change, and not once did I need to call in a professional electrician. I have several more projects on the agenda, including wiring my large shed, some low-voltage landscape lighting and a complete remodeling of the 50 year old kitchen and bathrooms, and this book includes all of the required information. I know I won't need to buy any other DIY books on the subject of wiring in order to finish the projects. Based on the quality and ease-of-use of this book, I went out and bought the Black & Decker book on plumbing. If you are remodeling (or just installing a ceiling fan) and want to save a ton of cash by doing your own electrical work, I highly recommend this book. 2 stars (OK, but not very advanced) - This book is fine for basic electrical work. But there a...

Home by Design- Transforming Your House Into Home

5 stars (An Excellent and very useful book - don't believe the negative reviews) - After reading the negative reviews, I got the book from the library instead of buying it. The negative reviews are really unfounded. It is worth buying. I was able to easily see all of the pictures, even the smallest ones, so the reviewer who complained about the small pictures needs glasses. I get more information from five small pictures on a page than one picture filling the entire page, so I appreciate the denser content. While many of the houses are luxury houses, the design principles can definitely be adapted to more modest houses. One of the houses used granite bathroom tile on the counter - clearly they had budgetary constraints. Many of the unique design features could be added to a modest house with considerable impact. The design principles are simplified into 27 types and illustrated better than any architecture book I have ever seen. In many cases, a second photo is modifed to remove the one isolated design feature being illustrated and it is easy to see the effect that the feature creates when it is missing. Regarding the lack of scale in the floor plans: I am glad there *are* floor plans - most books don't have them at all. It is very easy to create a scale knowing that a kitchen or bathroom counter is 2 feet wide, or that a entry door is 3 feet wide and go from there. A trained designer does this automatically in their head. Many projects are profusely illustrated from multiple angles and each one demonstrates several design principles. This is a very useful resource and an excellent primer on basic design principles. Although the principles explained are very basic, the examples shown are very sophisticated. This book is useful to the novice, and even more so to a trained designer who will see much more than what the text explains. The best design cannot be contained by mere words. All of the projects illustrated are top-notch designs. If you want this kind o...

Concrete at Home - Innovative Forms and Finishes- Countertops- Floors- Walls- and Fireplaces

5 stars (An excellent guide to incorporating concrete's positive qualities into a home) - Fu-Tung Cheng and Eric Olsen's Concrete At Home may sound like an unlikely mix for a home environment, but when used property, concrete can look and feel soft and warm while retaining extra durability. Cheng demonstrates how to mix colors and textures for this effect, from achieving a translucent effect to using thermal foam insulation to provide insulation to concrete, which typically has no insulating qualities to speak of. An excellent guide to incorporating concrete's positive qualities into a home. An excellent guide to incorporating concrete's positive qualities into a home. 5 stars (Mr. Cheng inspires) - Fu-Tung Cheng's latest book "Concrete At Home" is a wonderful journey to what is possible in home design using concrete as the expressive medium. It is full of wonderful photographs illustrating projects underway and in their finished appearance. I believe it's intent was mostly to excite and inspire and not be a step-by-step guide. With so many preconceptions out there about how things "should" look and be constructed, Fu-Tung Cheng has had the patience and inspiration to bring a whole new aesthetic to the discerning homeowner. While many projects showcased in "Concrete At Home" were for those with deeper pockets, I believe Mr. Cheng offers this timeless body of work as a place from which those of more modest means will be inspired to have the b...

Let-s Ask Michael - 100 Practical Solutions for Interior Design Challenges

5 stars (WONDERFUL!) - whoever gives this a so-so review is downright silly. This book is absolutely wonderful! for people who know nothing about design as well as design students. There are loads of wonderful ideas. 5 stars (Let's Ask Michael : 100 Practical Solutions for Interior Des) - An interior designer and the host of Home and Garden Television's Designing for the Sexes, Payne answers questions he has received as a result of the design guidance he gives on his show. Although the show's premise is to get couples to compromise on their design preferences to create mutually satisfying room d?#cor, here he primarily solves individual design challenges. Payne answers questions concerning every room of the house-bedrooms, bathrooms, dining rooms, kitchens, hallways, home offices, guest rooms, and libraries-and he illustrates his advice with color photographs. His practical, down-to-earth approach to design recommends this book for public libraries of any size. 5 stars (MIchael Answers With Inspiring Decorating Ideas) - Our TV fav host and ID does a neat thing: he answers emails and the publishes them with his answers and graphics. The show is really Michael's wonderful personality and design flexibility. Here it shows in advice on all rooms from kitchen to bath to living room to bedroom to dining room to family room and all others. His adept touch is in them all, such as this suggestion in regards to breathing new life into stale furniture on a tight budget: "have it professionally painted." It's answers like this that endure this guy to us in HGTV's audience. The index here is critical, since it cross-sections his answers not just by room, but by style, by topic e.g. wall color, by furniture piece, etc. 100 of them with good color shots and sketches and Michael. Only thing wish he'd included was a recommended bibliography for us who would like to go deeper. ...

French by Design

3 stars (Should you buy French By Design?) - I just did. The homes & rooms featured in this book indicate that money is no object and these homeowners want you to know it. Subtlety is non-existant. Rooms are very "we had a decorator & we spent a LOT". Most items looks too new, too ruffled, smocked, tucked and otherwise adorned. HOWEVER, if you can get past the pictures & READ THE TEXT- Phillips has a lot to say that is excellent. She lists sources & frequently shares fascinating comments on everyday details of French style (who knew about brass hardware vs brushed nickel?). If you read; buy it. If you look only at photos, don't! Charles Faudree is much better in the genre in my opinion. 5 stars (Beautifully presented.) - Another of Philips' beautiful French decorating books. Homes presented in this book, as with her other books are high end showing us the sumptuous fabrics, and lovely French furniture she specializes in. Homes shown are mostly mansions, not the average house. Good coffee table book. 5 stars (Brilliant, Great Sense of Design, a Visual Delight) - Not unlike all of Phillips' books, this book is a masterpiece of European syle and design. No detail is left unnoticed. The furniture, fabrics, antiques, architecture, artwork, and carved stone are each carefully considered and beautifully photographed. Every page is a visual delight. I cannot recommend it highly enough! ...

5 stars (Must have for designers!!!!!!) - Very informative and loaded with pictures of gorgeous fabrics from one of the top fabric design houses in the world. A must have for designers or anyone in the interior design business who deal with high end fabrics and trims on a regular basis. Would highly recommend this book!!!! 5 stars (Sensuous fabrics, trims, and more!) - This book has great historical information on the Scalamandre family and brand in addition to fabulous room photos. 5 stars (Scalamandre review) - This is one of the most beautiful books on Interior Design. It does not have a lot of type to clutter the beautiful photos. It will remain an historical account of an historic company that exposes beautiful fabrics to a discerning clientele. It should be in everyone's library...... ...

Tile Your World- John Bridge-s New Tile Setting Book

5 stars (Excellent resource, great confidence builder) - This book is more than just a how-to book. Between this book and the author's web-site full of friendly people and helpful advice, the average DIYer will find the knowledge and confidence to tackle nearly any tile project. If funds aren't an issue or you are a book junkie like me, I'd recommend you own this book and "Setting Tile" by Michael Byrne as both books cover different subjects to different depths, but if you only buy one book, "Tile Your World" by John Bridge is the one to own. 5 stars (Wonderful resource that keeps on giving) - As a dedicated DIYer with no tiling experience, I needed a book that would provide a good overview as well as the details to actually get the job done. This book presents the necessary information in a manner that benefits novices and pros alike. I was able to read the book cover to cover without losing interest. I then dug back into the book to re-read material to gain a more thorough understanding. When I've not been able to figure something out, I've posted questions directly to an active web-based forum hosted by the author (great resource and the book makes a pointer to it--that's the "keeps on giving" reference in the review title and it was worth the price of the book alone!). The only ding I'd give the book is that a good portion of the images are printed too small. As a newbie, I'd appreciated larger images throughout and would have been glad to pay a little more for it. 4 stars (Good Information from a Pro) - This book is a good resource for tile setting. Worth getting. Don't let the second class publishing format and unprofessional way of writing put you off, this isn't an essay on political science. It is obviously written by someone with many years of field experience. ...

The Owner-Builder Book- How You Can Save More than $100-000 in the Construction of Your Custom Home-

4 stars (good book... a bit redundant but provides good overall advice) - This was the first contracting book that I read. Since then I have purchased and read a few more that were recommended in this book. The book drives home the fact that planning is critical and give great tips to help you organize your plan. After reading this book, if you still think you want to be your own GC. I would suggest reading "The complete Guide to Contracting your Home". It gets more into the technical aspect of each phase of construction. 3 stars (Not a bad book to read.) - I was happy after reading this book. Concepts well laid out. 4 stars (good book on business side , not technical though) - I got this book with the author's autograph on it. I enjoyed reading it. It primarily teaches you how to manage the project, although it does not really go into the technical side of building a house. But, what is the most important thing of the building project ? it is the management right I guess. Overall this book is useful if you have not done it before. ...

Bungalow Kitchens

4 stars (Cool Kitchens) - This book contains an excellent collection of photos of Arts & Crafts period kitchens. It discusses the philosophy of design Gustav Stickley and others advocated and shows you the results, which are still beautiful, even after all these years. It is a little short on detail, if you wanted to reproduce the look of the Arts & Crafts kitchen, but it does spark the imagination. The examples of various kitchens is broken down by designer, so it is easy to pick out their specific design influence. I found this book an inspiration for some of the designs I would like incorporate in my own home, and combined with some other books of design details, it is excellent. 5 stars (A Great Source of Ideas for Remodeling a Bungalow Kitchen) - I bought this book to get ideas on renovating my 1930 bungalow kitchen. Although the book focuses more on restoration than renovation, I still found it a wonderful source of ideas. Filled with lots of full color pictures of restored and well-preserved kitchens, the book is worth its price for the pictures alone. The text covers both historic and current issues and is a wealth of information. Each section of the book has a chapter called "Obsessive Restoration" for those serious about historic integrity, but also offers a "Compromise Solution" for those of us who need to balance 21st century demands. We found the book extremely valuable in picking layout, hardware, appliances, cabinets, and flooring. It really helped us to design a kitchen that meets the needs of a modern family, yet which blends in with the historic values of our home. 4 stars (The Real Deal) - This book is great encouragement for those homeowners who know they want authentic vintage, but have to deal with current day construction fellas who just don't get it. The authors give many tips on how and where to get what you are looking for. The only drawback is that I was looking for a 1950's looking style, and this book very much focuses on an era...

Concrete Countertops- Design- Form- and Finishes for the New Kitchen and Bath

1 stars (Unavailable) - Book was not available. Seller explained that it was no longer available, but they would order it for me. They did not immediately notify me or inform me until I contacted them about the delay. I cancelled and ordered direct from Amazon. 4 stars (Concrete countertop construction) - This is a great guide to the basics of concrete coutertop design and construction. It was quite helpful in getting us started with our project. Thanks. 5 stars (Wiggers Flooring and Design Inc.) - First let me start by saying how much this book has inspired me. After reading it cover to cover I decided to leave my current company platform to include custom counters for my many clients. Of course only after pourung quite a few for my friends and for myself as well. The possibilies are endless when it comes to concrete design. This book has made us realize the full potential of the liquid state of concrete. I have just ordered the newest book the author released recently and am egerly awaiting the arrival. MaryJane-s Ideabook- Cookbook- Lifebook - For the Farmgirl in All of Us

4 stars (Journeying With MaryJane) - This is more than a book, which is why the title is composed of Idea,Cook and Life. It's hefty, filled with evocative, inspiring photographs, good recipes, and the encouraging story of MaryJane Butters' journey to her life today in Idaho. Along the way: working as a park ranger, farming organically, surviving as a single Mom, and establishing today's business. I had ordered this book as a 55th birthday gift for a friend, but will need to order another copy for her (this one is now "used": coffee rings and recipe notes...try hers for watermelon salsa.) And even though it's big, you CAN read it in bed! 5 stars (Incredible!!!!!!!!!) - This is not only a great resource...but it is inspiring...beautifully illustrated...took me on a journey of what is really important in life..to simplify...experience and create. 5 stars (Great book!) - I love this book! Just reading it makes me feel like I've taken a trip away from the hustle and bustle of the city! Beautiful photos, interesting information, and some great recipes to boot. This is less of a cookbook though - so if you're looking strictly for recipes more than anything else, this may not be the book for you. It is a great coffee table book and one that I will enjoy reading again. ...

Materials and Components of Interior Architecture 6th Edition

3 stars (Broad Outlook on Interior Products) - This book is a good reference for anyone who is currently designing or building a luxury home, but for a general education on construction interiors, this is not the book. There are many references to the latest products, which include both color and feature description that will be quickly outdated. Most of the discussion centers around materials that would be used in an affluent home rather than your typical family residence, and product descriptions focus on the unique product, not the typical. Dimensions for comfortable clearance and layout hints are useful for residential layout, but the commercial references are very limited. ...
