SnapStream Firefly PC Remote

5 stars (Not All USB Ports Are Created Equal.) - I purchased this Firefly remote a month ago to work with my PC-PVR (I have got a Hauppauge PVR-250 card and BeyondTV 3). As my computer and TV set are in different rooms, I thought it would be convenient to have an RF remote control so that I can still control video recording/playback while sitting in front of my TV. RF signals can usually travel a longer distance, and most importantly, they can penetrate walls. However, my first installation with the Firefly remote was not a totally success. It functioned well, but I have only measured a 6-foot of workable distance - with full battery power, and no blocking objects or interference sources nearby. I thought either I had a defective item, or the product was not as good as they said. I contacted Snapstream for support, and they suggested to try a different USB port or use a powered USB hub for plugging receiver. My computer has 6 USB ports - 4 in back and 2 in front, all built on the motherboard. I was using a front USB for the measurement. After I switched to an USB port in back, everything becomes perfect. I have learned that even all being built on the same motherboard, USB ports can be different, which may provide different power levels for external devices. Now my Firefly works great for my application, which is about 13 feet of transmission distance and with a wall (and some blocking objects as well) inbetween. Firefly remote can even perform the job of a mouse. Although it may not be as fast and convenient as a real mouse, it comes in handy for quick-and-easy controls. For the convenience the Firefly remote brings, I give it 5 stars! 4 stars (incredible) - Works great and fit's like a charm. worked through walls and a floor! amazing product!! 5 stars (I love this remote!) - This is one of the best things I have bought for my computer! It works great, it's completely customizable, and allows me to get the full potential of my computer! ...

Movie Edit Pro 2004

4 stars (I like it... But it's not perfect.) - First let me say that before I purchased MEP (I have version 10), I did a lot of research on available editing software. I must have read hundreds of reviews, several for each available brand. I also downloaded trial versions and edited some of my movies with them for comparison. And after all of that, I ended up buying MEP. I chose MEP because of the price and the excellent feature list. However I must admit, I was somewhat apprehensive about my decision because of the reviews I'd read. One of the major research sources I used was PC Magazine's online reviews. PC Magazine has reviews for just about every video editing software package on the market and is a good place to find information on video editing software. The PC Magazine editor had given Move Edit Pro a mediocre rating of 3 out of 5. The magazine commended MEP on its range of features but complained about the user interface and support. However, the article also included MEP user's responses to the article and most of the users seemed to absolutely love the software. As I read more and more reviews, I began to see a pattern. Users who seemed to be looking for a simple tape to DVD transfer package were mostly dissatisfied with MEP and the users on the other end of the spectrum, those that wanted a powerful editing utility, love the program. So you end up with the old, "you either love it or hate it" adage about this software; there's not much room for anything in the middle. I've had the software for a week now and I have to say that I love it. Unlike some of the downer reviews, I've had no problems with the interface; on the other hand, everyone seems to agree that support sucks, I've looked at the support website and I have to concur. I think the interface could be a lot better too. If Magix had adopted a more Windows standard interface, I believe they would have fewer complaints but even so, the interface is not hard to use and I can't reall...

SnapStream Beyond TV 3 - TeleVision without Limits

4 stars (Excellent Product - once you get it installed!) - Although it seemed to install OK, I couldn't get it to record for my life. I uninstalled and reinstalled twice. After lots of fooling around with the configuration I finally was able to record! This thing is absolutely great. One of the first things you come to appreciate is the free online TV guide. With the guide I can find my show easily and then tell it to record all new episodes. It then skips old episodes and will even follow the show when it moves from one night to another (i.e. goes from Wednesday night @ 7pm to Thursday @ 8pm). Try that with your VCR! Recordings can take up a ton of disk space - about 2.4 gig per hour. Beyond TV has an option where it will shrink the disk space required after the show completes. You can tell it to do the shrinking during non prime-time so it doesn't interfere with your usual work. Net effect is about 1/4 of the space is needed (.7 gig versus 2.4 gig) and I can't detect any quality difference! 1 stars (beyondtv cant install) - I tried to install this for 2 weeks and can't intall it. The installation wizzard complains that it can't find an internet connection. The tech support could not identify the problem and told me to wait (forever?) until they fine a fix. Apprently, BeyondTV has problems communicating with some ISP's. This is a known problem that Snapstrem didn't disclose. Now I'm stuck with software that will not even install (dell 2.5ghz with 1g memory). My $62 purchase is worthless. The warrenty specifically states that installation problems are not covered. Totally dissatisfied. 5 stars (This product is great) - It is so easy to record your favorate shows. With a product called mpeg-vcr, you can edit commericals out in seconds. Then burn to dvd. Way better than tivo, and no monthly fees! ...

Harry Potter- Quidditch World Cup

2 stars (I demand a remake!) - Quiddich, though only imaginative, is an incredible sport in concept. I was practically compelled to buy the game because of visions I had of the possibilities there, even though the reviews were lackluster. Well, turns out people were right. The passing and shooting is oversimplified, the 3D element is completely absent, and its a little too easy to steal the quaffle (i.e. the ball.) The bludgers and beaters (bat-weilding players hitting heavy balls at enemy players) were handled fairly well. The vying for special moves by accomplishing certain goals in a match is a nice touch, but another reviewer hit a chord when they compared their vision of a Quiddich video game with Madden Football. Let players compete at Hogwarts, Club (Professional), or World Cup difficulty, and let them handle the recruiting and management of a team (or even let players you had at Hogwarts play on your pro club when you move to the next level.) Let the flying be more 3 dimensional, with the chance to play as any position all the time instead of just chasers, and you could have a game that redefines sports gaming. Right now, its just a cheap shot by E.A. Games at all us Quiddich dreamers out there. $10? Yeah, its worth about that much. 2 stars (For the wee ones) - I agree with most of the other reviewers here: This game was clearly designed for younger kids, with the fun, eye-candy set high and any possible frustration kept to a minimum. It's clear that EA Games just adapted a soccer-game engine, trying to minimize the three-dimensional nature of Quidditch. That, combined with the utterly predictable AI system, makes it possible for an adult player to WIPE THE FLOOR with any and all comers. It's aggravating, really: It's not likely that there will be another version of this game made for adults with, say, an AI system worthy of the name. And EA games could have so easily created a workable 3D flying system--just use the usual WASD/three-button mouse ...

Final Draft AV2

1 stars (Quirky program made useless by copy protection) - Buyer beware: Final Draft incorporates an archaic copy protection scheme that will drive you nuts. Every other category of computer software did away with this kind of user-unfriendly copy protection scheme in the mid-80s, but the screenwriting software vendors persist. You're probably better off using Microsoft Word (which is far more robust) and using a simple formatting utility when you're project is finished. If you have any hard drive crashes or hardware upgrades and you forget to de-install Final Draft you will lose your install keys. Tech support is scarce and the online help system is only good for the most basic information. While it should make your life simpler this product will make your life hell. Avoid it like the plague. 5 stars (Best investment I've made for writing.) - I purchased Final Draft a couple of years ago, and it was the best investment for writing I've made yet. I had loads of story ideas in my head, but had no idea how to write a screenplay or teleplay, and didn't have the patience to read a book about it. I am a VERY basic computer user and feared formatting software would be nothing short of a nightmare, but within a month I formatted three one-hour teleplays, started on a screenplay, and knew how to navigate the software fairly well. The Smart-type feature is a lifesaver, and the various view, outline, and report features are incredibly helpful and save loads of time. There are a few features that were more complicated to learn, and as an absolute novice I had some questions that I couldn't find answers for in the program, but overall - I'm thrilled with it and use it everyday. I'd recommend this software to anyone, rank amateur or paid professional ,who's looking for a user-friendly, helpful, and reliable formatting system. 5 stars (There's a reason the whole world uses it -- it's the best) - Final Draft is simply the best there is. Screenwriter is buggy [I borrowed an in...

Hollywood Screenwriter

3 stars (To Leonard Snerdley) - First, this isn't a review of this product. I've seen alot of ridiculous things on the internet, but I came across the review by Leonard Snerdley that I just couldn't believe. Here's a quote from sNerdley "It's helped me realize that I really am a truly gifted writer...". I don't think I've seen someone that full of themselves...ever. Another quote, "But for us creative types, I guess that's not needed - we've always got new and fresh ideas!" Seriously, tell me you're kidding. Apparently not, he keeps going with "This type of thing is mainly for those of us who truly have a future in the business, not the pretenders." (sound of one man throwing up). This has to be a joke, right?! How can someone be so full of themselves while being so condescending towards everyone else on the planet that "should consider another hobby or long-term project". Looking at some of this person's other reviews I can see this guy apparently thinks he's the greatest thing in the world. His profile even screams insecure wannabe talent with "I also seem to be a lone voice of critical reason in a sea of hyperbole." I feel like I'm reading something written by Dr. Timothy Leary...one person can not seriously be this conceited and full of themselves?! 5 stars (Just might make you rich!) - For anyone who knows me, it's no secret that I would love to be a screenwriter. Will that dream ever happen? Who knows, but until it does I'm content to practice what I feel is my true gift, reviewing. But while I'm honing my craft as a reviewer, hoping to be published one day, I still like to work on my other dreams, like screenwriting (and stand-up comedy). That's where this program comes in handy. I type in my characters and locations, and it helps me input them automatically, saving loads of time while I write. In fact, the software is so easy to use, I completed two screenplays within a week of owning it: "The Next Karate Kid, Part II", and "Stardrivers", which is...

Writer-s Dreamkit 4 Win-Mac

4 stars (A JUMP START TO MY WRITING) - I looked to this product to give me a little push and shove into writing more and organizing my thoughts. So far, it has worked out pretty well for me. It has made me consider in more detail my character developments and conflicts. Don't expect it to write for you, but if you are looking for some organization it is well worth the price. 1 stars (Junk.) - I suggest saving yourself the $34.49 and instead investing in a Bickpen and one of those little black journals we used in school. All this program is good for is keeping a record of character, plot and motivation. Frankly, all you need is a couple pieces of paper for that. 2 stars (Restrictive and time-consuming) - The problem with most novel-writing software I've been testing is that they involve a lot of "writing before the writing." While some planning is good, the amount of data entry these programs require detract from getting actual pages written, and the reality is that all those plans will likely change as you write anyway. This program is no exception. I find all the initial set-up to be cumbersome without yielding benefits that might ultimately actually streamline my process in the weeks or months ahead. (By contrast, for example, Final Draft - a screenwriting program - stores your characters' names so that you only need to type the first few letters and press Enter. You can also toggle your scenes from script to outline and back again without re-entering the information.) As for the more theoretic stuff, the story prompts are clearly taken from screenwriting which is formulaic due to the time contraints of a film. (For example, the lengths of scenes, act breaks, and total number of pages are far more restrictive to fit a 120-minute film than the scenes, chapters, and total pages of a novel.) Because a novel can be far longer than a 120-page screenplay, there's little here for creating stories with complex plots, for tracking subplots, or for creating backstory f...

Marvel Comic Book Library Vol 1

5 stars (Lo! How the Mighty Have Fallen!) - As a Marvel fan since 1968 onward, I've dreamed of a collection like this. The classic icon heroes of my youth forever preserved in pristine condition, dynamically digitized, electronically enumerated! Herein, find, if ye dare, the original appearance not only of most core heroes of the Marvel Universe, but the supremely villanous counterparts: Dr Doom, The Mandarin, Doc Ock, Magneto. A rogue's gallery! Art by the incomparable Jack "King" Kirby and Steve Ditko! Scripts by Stan "The Man" Lee! Who could ask for more! Make mine Marvel! Yeesh! Can you tell I was raised on the dulcid dialogue of Stan Lee? Technical notes: Each page of the comic (as previously indicated, story only, no ads or letters) appears in an Explorer window. Problem is that comic books are drawn in "portrait" and computer displays are in "landscape". So you have a choice of seeing the whole page but having black bars on each side of the screen, or blowing the page up but only being able to see half the page at a time. A lousy choice, but one made necessary by the natures of the media. The initial display is a single page with each of the ten series lead characters, selecting from there gives you a view of the original covers of the 10 issues. Clicking on a cover brings you to a full size screen, and you can use PgUp/PgDown or arrow buttons to move from page to page. This is rather a slow process, probably due to the detail of the art & color. Use your cursors "Back" button to return to the menu levels. A nice feature: Special buttons along the top row allow you to view either the uncolored art, or the colors without the black ink. The quality of the reproduction is excellent. Even when grossly blown up, there is no sign of digitization in the display. Another unfortunate side-effect of this presentation is that two page spreads cannot be viewed together. Makes for some awkward reading on Cockrum's X-men art. I recommend this for any comic afficianado ove...
