The Tipping Point- How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

1 stars (Please - Stop Him Before He Writes Another Book!) - This is the second Gladwell book I've read, and unfortunately its as bad as the first (Blink!). His basic point is that little things can make a big difference. Gladwell's problem, however, is that he doesn't know what he's writing about, and it's a fatal flaw. For example, early in this book he relates how a "small change" in Brooklyn policing strategies turned into a "large drop" in crime. In reality, "broken windows," accompanied by much more data-driven and administrative follow-up policing referred to by Gladwell was a large (not small change). The reality is that "broken windows" policing ended up going far beyond simply pursuing those with minor violations (eg. fare-beating) to include studying crime patterns (location, timing, etc.), setting improvement goals, and regular high-level follow-up. Secondly, "Freakonomics" research concluded that the crime-rate decline began BEFORE the change in policing, and that much of the decline was due to increased staffing. Gladwell also attributed the decline to improved economic conditions - however, no such decline accompanied prior economic good times. Finally, Gladwell offered no explanation of why similar steep declines in crime occurred across the U.S. at the same time - without regard to any change in policing! Another of Gladwell's problems is that he doesn't seem to understand anything about statistics. The fact that a change in policing suposedly occurred at the same time as a decline in crime rates seems to be "proof" of causation for Gladwell. One of the first lessons in statistics, however, is that "correlation does not imply causation." Summarizing, the book starts out poorly, and goes downhill from there - increasingly boring, confusing, and totally lacking in credibility. Don't confuse, aggravate, misinform yourself with this book 5 stars (This Little Book will Make a Big Difference) - This fascinating book is an investigation into ...

Psychological Testing - Principles- Applications- and Issues

5 stars (Psychological testing, principles, applications and issues) - I have read many books in the psychology field, and I thought this book did an excellent job of presenting clear and concise information on psychological testing. The book focused on the various testing techniques that are used in the psychology field. It raised important issues around how to appropriately apply testing and why we use them. i recommend this book to professionals in the field or to anyine who may have a curiosity about psychological testing in general. It's a real eye opener!Your interest won't fade out. ...

Biological Psychology with CD-ROM and InfoTrac

4 stars (cells over systems) - I'm a biopsychologist. Kalat is a very good writer with a gift for explaining difficult concepts and for keeping technical issues interesting. I chose his Intro Psych book for my classes for just this reason. My response to this book is a little more mixed. Biopsychology ranges broadly from cellular to systems level research. This book does well at the former level. It gets a little more deeply into the biochemistry than I would prefer but does so well and is impressively up to date. It does less well at the systems level literature. For example, it defines two common imaging terms incorrectly: PET and rCBF (mixing them up with SPECT and PET respectively). Overall, I like the book and chose it for my biopsychology class but every instructor needs to choose based on their own needs for depth and for emphasis. 4 stars (as for textbooks.....) - as for textbooks for a biopsych class, this book is certainly interesting and the enhanced cd is definitely a plus. this book has not yet been used as a pillow for a sudden study break nap. the pictures are clear, the writing is friendly, and it's too bad that more texts can't be like this! 4 stars (Great textbook!) - I'm a freshman Psychology student at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands)... I used this book to study for my course Biological Psychology (duh!)... Anyway, this book is very organized, good summaries and a clear explanation of all the important concepts... Even if you don't have much knwoledge of biology, you will understand this book... at least I did... ...

Motivational Interviewing- Second Edition- Preparing People for Change

5 stars (A new classic) - If change were easy, a lot of us (psychologists, counselors, health care providers) would be out of work. Still, that doesn't stop us from complaining about those clients and patients who just won't do what we think is in their best interest. Motivational Interviewing, a "client-centered, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation," was developed specifically to help faciliate change in "resistant" populations and has been embraced by addictions treatment and general health care professionals alike. The entirely re-written, highly readable, second edition of MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING updates readers on the state of the art and science of MI, and provides a practical guide for helping people to make all kinds of behavior changes. The book opens with a brief review of the converging lines of inquiry that supported the development of MI and an overview of core concepts such as readiness to change, ambivalence, and an interpersonally-based understanding of motivation. The second section is a guide to practice. While "spirit" is emphasized over technique, this section is filled with practical advice on how to increase motivation for change while minimizing resistance. A new chapter on ethics addresses the concerns that arise when attempting to motivate clients to do something they aren't sure they want to do. Consistent with the method's client-centered approach, the third section constitutes a chapter on learner-centered training in MI. The fourth section - comprising about half the volume - includes diverse contributed chapters on applications of MI. These include a discussion of MI and the Stages of Change model with which it is often associated; an excellent review of efficacy research in MI; adaptations of MI such as brief advice and MI with couples or groups; and applications with specific populations and settings. The application chapters necessarily vary in format but share in common careful consideration of the rationale for M...

Biopsychology with -Beyond the Brain and Behavior- CD-ROM 5th Edition

5 stars (A Masterful Work ) - Pinel's Biopsychology is a masterful work. I can only imagine the immense amount of time and effort that has gone into it. I don't think you can find another book in this field that appeals to such a wide range of readers. I have used this book and previous editions of it as the primary text in the graduate Biopsychology courses I have taught over the past 8 years. This book has consistently earned accolades from my students for presenting what is an otherwise complicated and highly technical subject, in a graspable and witty manner. 5 stars (Excellent book for discerning readers) - I have degrees in neurophysiology, molecular biology, and bioorganic chemistry. I really dislike psych texts; in fact, I really dislike psych. What a bunch of fluff BS. This book accomplishes something rare. It effectively frames discussions of psych topics in terms of their hard science antecedents. Pinel makes it seem as though the field of psych actually lives in reality, or at least has a summer home here. Pinel also tells the story, in segments throughout the book, of a traumatic and relevant experience, making the book read more like an engrossing biography than a text. He always relates his personal experinces, but not so much as to distract from the material itself. Extremely well done. One of the only books I had to buy that I actually wanted to keep. 5 stars (This book brings many counter-intuitive points.) - I found chapters on sleeping and drugs use especially fascinating as they do effectively challenge popular and even professional traditional opinion. To make my point I want to present you a pop quiz based on the book's contents (please keep in mind that the book is counter-intuitive): 1) A person who sleeps four hours a day or less will usually suffer health consequences. True or False? 2) Smoking and Alcohol use are detrimental to one's health, but they are not as dangerous and addictive as illegal drugs. True or Fals...

The Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner Practice Planners

3 stars (Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner) - This book is interesting, but it is far too "testbooky" and would benefit from being more focused on specific "how to" examples of treatment plans as do many other similar efforts. The text makes interesting reading, but, it didn't provide the concrete examples I expected. 5 stars (Another great tool for the practioner's tool box.) - Research suggests that an ever increasing number of practioners are relying on tools such as this to help formulate treatment plans. As a graduate student, what I find useful about this book is that after you study a particular disorder---from the DSM-IV-TR itself, a good psychopathology text (see Davison & Neal's Abnormal Psychology), and the DSM's Diagnostic Criteria handbook, The Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner completes the loop. I bought this book after taking a case studies class where the instructor did an absolutely miserable job in showing us the rhyme and reason behind a good treatment plan. Not satisfied that I knew enough about this critically important piece in the counseling process, I did some research and found this book to be the most highly regarded in this genre. As subsequent classes deal with child and adolescent psychopathology, family psychopathology, etc. etc. I will be getting the treatment plans that correspond with these issues. 5 stars (Thank You.) - Just what I needed, such a time saver now I can actually use my brain power to help not just write about it--Thanks again. ...

Abnormal Psychology - An Integrative Approach with CD-ROM and InfoTrac

5 stars (Cheaper Paperback book) - The book was very reliable (and cheaper) than what I could have bought at the bookstore. So far, the book is working well and I have no doubts. 5 stars (DSM-IV explained (maybe).) - Using DSM-IV criteria throughout, the authors manage to provide a succinct analysis of psychopathology, as seen from a transtheoretical perspective. The research alone quoted throughout makes this book a valuable resource, but combined with an engaging writing style and top-notch structure, it promises to secure Barlow and Durand's position as authors-to-beat when it comes to the field of Abnormal Psychology. 5 stars (Great Introductory book) - Very thorough treatment of the subject from well rounded, expert authors. Text assumes no previous knowledge, and is quite lengthy because of its comprehensive nature. I have used it many times as a reference text after taking a course in which it was required. Also this text is an example of a beautiful job of "book making". The text has many color plates -- and a high quality printing job. ...

Lifespan Development 4th Edition

3 stars (Okay, but lacking) - Used for a developmental psychology class, this book wasn't worth the $94.00 I paid for it. I could have easily substituted this book for any introductory psychology textbook. Piaget, Kolberg, Erikson, and Freud are hardly touched on and their theories are under-summarized. There is also a lack of relevant, current studies in the area of developmental psychology. Most studies are summarized and do not give any usable, substaintial evidence which could be used elsewhere (ex: in papers). 5 stars (Excellent) - Highly recommended book for studnets in marital and family therapy. Chapters are thouroughly written and context-bound. 5 stars (Excellent text) - I have taught (and taken) courses in Child Development and Lifespan Development with numerous textbooks, and this was definitely my favorite. The text is exceptionally thorough and includes a balance of theory and application. Relevant research is discussed throughout, in a way that is interesting and engaging and emphasizes the importance of scientific rigor in studying development. Most of all I appreciate the personal, direct voice of the text, as if I am listening to the author talk. Some other texts actually make reading about lifespan development boring (hard to do but can be done!) This one very effectively illuminates how fascinating it can be. My only criticism might be that I found it very difficult to cover the entire text in a one semester class, precisely because it is so rich in information. ...
