Brock Biology of Microorganisms 10th Edition

3 stars (Not so easy to read) - I got this book for an introductory class on microbiology. As part of a course it is OK. As others have pointed out there are some sections that could have been done better. For me the main issue was this was not so easy to read. I know it is college level, but for example my introductory biology and chemistry books did not suck the life out of everything and even had helpful little side articles that connected things up. If you are a professor I suggest using a different textbook, and of course you are better qualified to find said book. My issue was that this book was dull and I am interested in the subject so that shouldn't have been the case. 3 stars (Good for amateur microbiologists) - This book does a great job in reviewing the basic tenets of microbiology, however, it doesn't delve into near as much detail as needed for any micro major or graduate student. Sections on molecular bio of bacteria are particularly bad, and metabolic pathways are given only a brief overview (entner-doudoroff has less than 2 pages). That being said, the book does do an excellent job in surveying the vast numbers of microbes, and it virology section is above average for a bacteriology book. Decent intro book, but anyone going into detail should buy something else. 1 stars (?!) - too expansice, no answers for the stupid practice problems. They provide instructor free Study guide and CD, and the student has to buy the boring book. If they treat their readers equally, I would gave them 2 stars. ...

5 stars (Excellent Introduction to the Field of Psychology) - I had this book as a textbook for my intro to psych class. It is a well written text. Unlike most textbooks, it is not dry or boring. This book uses examples for it's concepts, such as Tiger Wood's golf game and Alice in Wonderland. It also has diagrams, definitions, graphs, tables, and mini-experiments to back up and sum up the text. In short, it is set up well for any type of learner. The text covers many areas of psychology, including the history, the brain, sense and perception, consciousness, learning, emotion, and disorders. I would definitely recommend it for a class or an ambitious solo reader. ...

Social Psychology 5th Edition

3 stars (Social Psychology 5th ed) - This book is very easy to understand, and the real-world examples/analogies are helpful (even if they are a little in excess). It's one of the few textbooks I've bought that I don't consider a (total) waste of money. 1 stars (Fuzzy, unstructured and too politically correct book ) - This is 5th edition of the book written in early 90th (first edition was in 1994). The book did not change much since. This is fuzzy, politically correct and watered down presentation of the subject. For example when you learn about cognitive dissonance you are not told that the original Festinger experiment was connected with the behavior of a flood doomsday cult after the target date of the flood passed. This might be an OK book as a second of third book for self-education (you can save money buying any previous edition, but in no way this should be your first or only book on the subject), but this can be a horror show if this is your standard textbook at the university 101 Social physiology course and you need to pass an exam. Here the inability of the authors to distinguish between important and unimportant will hunt you down. The authors are too fond of abusing "social-psychology-speak" and introduce too many pseudo-scientific terms without real necessity: it looks like they try artificially inflate both themselves and the subject by immersing trivial notions in obscure jargon. This infatuation with jargon, on the level completely unacceptable for the introductory course is one of the worst features of the book. It especially evident are summaries which are the Achilles spot of the book: badly written, badly thought-out, somewhat detached from the chapters content, horribly structured and weakly typeset. The other problem with this book as an introductory (101 type) book is that it is just too big. If you really want to know the type of questions given on college microbiology exams get the following; Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi The latter study guide helped me to prepare more thoroughly for the kind of questions encountered on my finals and midterms. Treat Your Own Back

5 stars (Here's what I thought....) - Book discusses a very specific way of treating back pain. In short, you do these backward bending motions which is suppose to have an effect on the discs in your spine. In addition, you sit up straight and watch your posture. All in all, it didn't help me much, but I do know many people it has helped- so I say give it a try. Also liked "Treat Your Own Knees" if you have knee pain. 5 stars (i am taking responsibility for my back) - until now i have been dependent on my osteopath to fix me......this is a helpful book...i have spent a great deal of money on dr. and massage therapist treatment until......i found a percussion massager with infra red heat for $29.95, this immediately relieved muscle spasms. found at wally world after i had purchased a professional mini thumper that was so heavy i could not hold.....i do the exercises in book...thank you mr. mckenzie for writing this book..........a chronic back ache woman....... 5 stars ( Treat Your Own Back ) - Very clear and useful information. I was told I would receive a check in the mail for the cost of return shipping which was more than I expected to pay. What Not to Wear

1 stars (Might be good if you are clueless!) - The book was okay, but I get more enjoyment from a copy of Vogue. It would probably be great for a woman who has no clue how to dress for her body type. Also, they did not address every body type! They should have added no butt and long torso! I got more out of their apperance on Oprah(which is why I bought the book) than from the book. 2 stars ( What Not to Wear ) - I was disappointed. The info was very basic...actually TOO basic for what they actually charged for the book. I will probably give the book away; would not recommend buying it. How to File for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy- 12th Edition

3 stars (Could have been better) - - only 16 states allow residents to use Federal exemptions (including Michigan) so they only provide a few measly examples for state exemptions, so if you live in one of the 16 states that allow residents to use Federal exemptions don't expect much from this book - book repeats instructions already on forms over and over; could have eliminated 100 pages at least if they just said follow instructions on forms - if you've read forms, read "Bankruptcy Basics" flyer at Federal website and gotten few few consultations you can skip this book 5 stars (Very Good but look closely.) - A useful guide, as far as I can tell, professional and concise. A possible caution however. The most recent edition as of Nov. '04 is the 11th edition, 2004. I would suggest that you not buy a used copy unless the seller specifies the edition or the publication date. This may not matter very much. Note that the most recent Gilbert bankruptcy law guide and the most recent Nutshell bankruptcy law guide are both 2002 (as far as I can tell). If you're serious about looking into this, you might as well have the sharpest tools you can find. 5 stars (This book saved me attorney's fees! Worth its weight in gold) - I can't say enough wonderful things about this book! 6 months ago I was contemplating bankruptcy. I searched for a book to help me and decided to buy this one. Honestly, I figured I'd read it, be more confused than ever and have to hire an attorney. That's NOT what happened. I took a weekend and studied every page of this book and took notes. I filled out and filed my bankruptcy petition on my own. Today, I attended my creditor's meeting. Now, in just 2 months, I'll receive my discharge. All WITHOUT a lawyer! Filing bankruptcy without a lawyer is more time consuming, but the money saved is worth it. Just take your time and study this book and you'll be fine. Thank you, Nolo. Buying this book was the best thing I've done this year. ...
