Troubleshooting Campus Networks- Practical Analysis of Cisco and LAN Protocols

5 stars (Good book for network admins) - My overall impression was that this is a great book. I felt that the first chapter was unnecessary detail, and sort of seemed like chest thumping to me. I find this book to be an excellent reference about just about all aspects of LAN communications. I was not impressed with the WAN protocols however. I sort of expected more of that, as you might find in a Campus network. I keep this book handy, and often find myself using it as a reference when I am unsure of a conclusion I have drawn. I recommend this book to anyone looking for reference material. 5 stars (A myth-shattering, authoritative and enlightening title) - I'm sad I waited so long to read this excellent book. "Troubleshooting Campus Networks" (TCN) was published in Jul 2002, and it belongs on every network administrator's shelf -- now! This is the best networking book since Scott Haugdahl's "Network Analysis and Troubleshooting" and Eric Hall's "Internet Core Protocols." TCN will truly test your networking knowledge; you'll quickly validate the truth and discard the fiction. So many books discuss networks, but somehow distort subtle points. Authors Oppenheimer and Bardwell know their material inside-out and explain key points in clear, concise prose. Ever hear of the "37% utilization rule for Ethernet?" It's false. Think that TCP sequence numbers count packets? Wrong -- they count bytes of data. And why are sequence numbers seemingly "off by one?" Look at the difference between ordinal and cardinal numbers, described in ch. 9. TCN displays an uncanny ability to include just the information that is needed. "Reversible half-ASCII," which accounts for odd-looking NetBIOS traces, appears in ch. 12. The sections on Windows networking are first-rate, with helpful comparisons of NetBIOS with IPX, TCP, and NetBEUI. 5 stars (Computer Repair with Diagnostic Flowcharts) - This book has been invaluable to my computer repair shop. It gets all of my technician's trouble shooting using the same step by step logical method. No jumping to conclusions or assuming. A great quality control and computer repair tool. 3 stars (Not complete, but still handy) - This book is very short, and it often states the obvious. It is far from complete, but it's still a handy thing to have around and much more portable than a big O'reilly's book. The good thing about it is that it's so damn easy to read. You can follow the flow chart to go straight to the advice you're looking for. I just wish it was longer and offered more solutions than it does. 5 stars (Great computer repair!) - Handy flowcharts with accompaning detailed descriptions. Very logically organized and layed out. It provides you with a structured process for tracking down pc problems. Highly recommended. Having a little troubleshooting experience would be helpful, but not absolutely necessary. A fair number of pc problems have very simple solutions. The author does not overlook the obvious(is it plugged in? are all the mute buttons unchecked?) on way to making a proper diagnosis. If you are at all serious about providing your own tech support (or support to friends and family), get this book. Money well spent. ...

Zen in the Art of Archery Vintage Spiritual Classics

5 stars (Intriguing and perplexing in equal measure.) - I very much enjoyed reading this book. It is a biographical account of one mans experience as he moves from a position of ignorance towards an understanding of Zen. The bewildering spritual "How to" which seems to have a lot more to do with what you don't do than what you do. The confounding realisation that all effort is false, whereas no effort can lead to superhuman feats of accuracy. It's a magical true story about how a mans confusion and understanding become fused into something of an incomprehensible truth: You don't understand it, but it works. What I enjoyed most about the text is that it gives insipration to Zen learners, something to aim for, so to speak. What I didn't like is that it doesn't really offer insight into how one combines an attitude of no presumed effort with the experience of splitting an arrow-shaft lengthwise from the far side of an unlit warehouse. In other words, the book sufficiently illustrates the effects of success with Zen practice but having read the book the cause still remains a mystery: A relaxed attitude alone will do nothing to improve your golfing average, so how does it work? 5 stars (The effortless flow of our own holy being in harmony with what we are doing ) - I read this book many years. It was J.D. Salinger who brought me to it. And the central idea that he taught from it was the art of 'aiming without aiming'. Or rather how wrong and forced effort which is wholly concentrated on ' result' and 'result' alone (i.e. hitting the bullseye) leads to missing the mark. The great idea of this work is the idea of a kind of practice which leads to effortless effort, to a 'hitting the mark' without aiming , to somehow allowing one's own inner powers to be in harmony with the task one is doing. 5 stars (Top Flight Calder) - The book gives you the tech you need, in terms you can understand. Calder is very impressive in his ability to impart knowledge to the layman. Don't however, assume this is just fluff overview, because it truly is the down and dirty of how it works and how to maintain it. 5 stars (A Cruiser's Engine Atlas) - This book provides the reader with a broad overview of most of the basic problems that can occur and offers simple solutions. I have recommended/loaned my copy of this book to several Diesel sailboat owners. The all remarked on how simple their repair was according to the book and how it save them $$. I do find the book is a little lacking in coverage of large powerboat diesels, but the concepts seem applicable. 5 stars (Know Your Diesel) - My copies of this book has grease stained fingerprints throughout. A lot of folks have told me they think this book is redundant, because much of the info is covered in Mr. Calder's Mechanical & Electrical Manual but this smaller book is easier to work with when working around your engine and the material is presented differently enough that the book is one I believe you should have if you live on a boat. ...

Trapshooting Secrets

4 stars (More breaks!) - Outstanding book! While reading I recognised several things I was doing that was causing lost targets. The sections on concentration techniques and target aquisition have definitely helped my game, and by following his advice, my handicap average jumped from 21 at the 16 to 24, and from 19 at the 25 to 22. His practice tips for both home and field, if followed, will help anyone improve thier game. The guys at the range asked me how I made the jump, and well, I'm not telling them! 2 stars (Too much repitition!) - The author repeats himself over an over to the point of nausea. The diagrams are not straight forward and at times difficult to follow. The first few chapters, I had to keep checking if I was still on the previous page read, because of the exact same sentences on each page. Overall, not a good book. Too repititous and written extremely poorly. Would not waste my money on it if I had previewed the book. Recommend if you are serious about trap shooting, look for another reference. 2 stars (Review of Trapshooting Secrets - WS-South Africa) - The author definately has a lot of tips, but the general layout of the book is poor. There is a lot of repetition, so both the content and price could be cut by half. It would have been better to see the Illustrations in their relevant chapters. There are also places where the author contradict previous statements in his book. I think it is after all this still worth the time reading the book, try out suggestions, and you will surely still learn something you did not know. ...

Aimed at someone who will be actually designing and implementing a wireless network in her company or home. Thus there are many small details discussed, that in practice may prove quite useful to a successful installation. Like weatherproofing the equipment in an outdoors environment. Or detecting and minimising noise sources. The theory is kept to a minimum. No abstruse maths. You should already be reasonably conversant with the main wireless concepts. ...
