Breakout Churches- Discover How To Make The Leap

1 stars (An unfortunate addition to Rainer's fine history of work) - I am sorry to report that this is one of the worst books I have ever read. It's hard to believe it was authored by Thom S. Rainer. The fundamental problem with research stems from the selection criteria for "breakout churches". The criteria was so abysmally biased by Rainer's desire not to promote growth that stemmed from the involvement of a new pastor that they only produced 13 churches out of 400,000. Rather than taking another pass at identifying churches that would energize us in our calling, they instead decided to write a book lauding these 13 churches as the "good to great" of our time. Before you put this in your shopping cart consider the criteria led them to the selection of churches who: -Have pastors with an average tenure of 21.6 years with this one church (pg. 57) -Current pastor must have participated in both the declining years, as well as the break-out growth (pg. 16) -None of the 13 churches seek to discover a vision (pg. 111) -"Are careful, even plodding in making changes" (pg. 150) If you're looking for a book that will make you feel better about your church which has been declining for years, without giving you much in the way of actionable strategies, you've come to the right place. I hope Jim Collins received a quarter every time his name, his book title, or a page number in Good to Great was referenced! The only thing this book inspired me to do was re-read my copy of Good to Great! 5 stars (Character Counts) - I must start by saying that I am not an advocate of what is typically known as the "Church Growth Movement." However, I believe "Breakout Churches" breaks all the molds of this genre of books. What the remarkable research of this book has demonstrated is simple and yet profound in our day: Church growth is directly related to the godly passion of its leadership and not to the promotion of pragmatic strategies. Several things struck me about the results of...

The Lamb-s Supper- The Mass as Heaven on Earth

5 stars (Reaches into your soul) - I was introduced to Scott Hahn when a dear friend gave me this book to read. Mr. Hahn is the first writer able to explain Catholic beliefs and doctrine in understandable layman's terms. For the first time, I truly understood teachings about the Mass and scripture, that I just doubted and had trouble believing. For once I am no longer scared of reading the Book of Revelations. Sinc then I have read many of Mr. Hahn's titles. I suggest to anyone who is struggling with understanding the Catholic Church, that you pick up any of Hahn's books and take the time to read, meditate, and be transformed. 5 stars (Gripping.) - From beginning to end this book is just fascinating. Finally, a text about the Book of Revelations that is NOT filled up with crazy "End Times" theories! This book will not only make you appreciate the Book of the Apocalypse more, but you will find this book making you appreciate the Mass in a whole new and important way. 5 stars (Judgment Day) - Someone pointed out to me that the those in the early church realized the crucial, "eschatological dimension" of the mass because of the martyrdom which was so immanent for many of them. When they heard "Kyrie eleison" (Lord have mercy) they realized that they were at that moment before the Judgment Throne of Christ on the Day of Judgment itself! We in the 21st century need books like this to make the connection between Christ's Ultimate Sacrifice and Our Ultimate Destiny. Dr. Scott Hahn masterfully connects the Book of the Apocalypse and the Divine Liturgy showing in what manner they are two manifestations of the same reality of the Revelation of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and his message of salvation and how they help interpret each other. This is all shown to be in accordance with the way the fathers and teachers of the Catholic Church have always viewed the Mass. I would recommend this book for non-Catholics who are curious as to why the Catholic church does not mak...

The Lutheran Handbook- A Field Guide to Church Stuff- Everyday Stuff- And the Bible

4 stars (great read) - good intro to the religion for curious readers. also very humorous for those who are lutherans! 5 stars (This is a Fascinating book!) - What a great little book! Anyone negotiating the Lutheran church (especially the ELCA) will enjoy it as it covers, in a concise and occasionally humorous manner, all the things you need to know, want to know and already know about the church. I particularly enjoyed the simple way the Reformation and Martin Luther were presented. It is packed full of interesting items such as: Comparative religion History of the church Anatomy of a Baptism How to receive communion How to stay awake during the sermon How to share your faith How to identify a miracle What to bring to a potluck The top 10 Bible miracles and their meanings The five biggest misconceptions about the Bible The list goes on and on. There are also illustrations, maps, diagrams and other essential tips. This is informative and fun and a book you'll want to keep and give as a gift. Armchair Interviews says: You don't have to be a Lutheran to enjoy and receive benefit from this book. Actually this is a light-hearted look at all things Lutheran. Frankly it is wonderful -- and it's a hoot! 4 stars (Short, sweet chapters get the point across . . . the basics of Lutheranism) - I love this little book! Modeled on the "Worst-Case Scenario Survival" handbooks, it covers basic Christian tenants with a focus on Lutheranism. It's published by Augsburg Fortress, the publishing arm of the ELCA, however it's not overtly ELCA (I think LCMS and WELS Lutherans could appreciate it also). It's probably geared to young adults, but anyone can benefit from it. It covers important basics in a clear, concise way and, in many cases, with a light-hearted tone. It's refreshing to read the chapters about things you've known all your life, like how to pray. The chapters covering the seasons of the church year, comparing various denominations, 60 essential Bible stories, and ...

Every Man-s Battle - Winning the War on Sexual Temptation One Victory at a Time The Every Man Serie

5 stars (A great book) - A great book with a practical approach to a sensitive area for all men. 5 stars (Great tool to overcome sexual temptation) - This is an incredible book. It totally helped me to overcome my struggles with pornography and sexual temptation in general. It gives the reader tools to fight the battle. I'd highly recommend it. It's changed my life and the lives of others I know. If you struggle at all in this area, it's the book for you. 2 stars (Agreed) - Hello, my name is Michael Campbell, and having used this book in a study group I agree that it is totally a mixed bag. I feel her review is right on, and dont really have that much to add to it. Luckily it was a quick read (each of the 6 sections takes only 20 or 30 minutes to read) and so I dont feel I wasted a lot of time on it. If you struggle with sexual purity then this is for you. If not invest your time in the Bible or another wonderful book Gods Politics by Wallis. God bless! Mike Campbell ...

What-s So Amazing About Grace-

3 stars (Not bad, but way below my expectations) - I think one of the most important subjects in christian theology is Grace. After reading the book by Erwin Lutzer titled ''How you can be sure you will spend eternity with God'' (one of my favourite books on that subject), i decided i need to give more time reading and studying about Grace. That's how i stumbled upon Whats so Amazing about Grace. Reading a fairly good reviews about it, i was so anxious to get it. But alas, i was very disappointed. The book has some excellent chapters and ideas for sure, but all in all, i am afraid its a boring book and doesnt present any new insight on Grace. Some ideas are very redundant and repeated over many chapters. The author uses very very limited bible referencing and you feel as if the author isnt bothering with scripture, and speaks more from a ''social'' point of view. I agree with another reviewer when he said 'Grace got lost in the way' as Yancey doesnt speak about the real Grace (God towards man) but more like grace as in man towards man. At the end of the day, i didn't learn anything new on Grace and was more or less bored. This book is ''ok'' but nothing more. I would give it 2.5 over 5. 2 stars (Grace gets lost in the mix) - I have read and reviewed The Jesus I Never Knew and Rumors of Another World by Yancey and loved them both...See reviews on those pages. However, I was completely disappointed with this book. There are few pages on which Yancey does not accuse and condemn the church for various imperfections. He uses several stories to show how the church lacks grace. Several of these include non-Christians accusing Christians of lacking grace. Yancey seems to side with any who condemn Christians for what they deem as "ungrace." One example is an addicted mother of a 2 yr old girl who has prostituted the girl for drug money. She states she did not go to a church because they would make her feel bad. This story opens the book and is referred to several t...

The Ragamuffin Gospel

5 stars (I'm thankful God loves Ragamuffins.) - This is a thought-provoking book, worth reading slowly. The message is pretty simple -- but not easy to internalize. I used the book as a daily spiritual meditation for a time. Then some friends and I reread it and met together weekly to discuss it. There is much in common with Phil Yancey's "What's So Amazing About Grace?" It mixes stories from the author's experience with spiritual insight about God acting in human affairs. The main point is that Christians need to honestly consider God's love and grace and appreciate it for what it is. It is human nature to resist God's grace, to try and prove oneself really "good" and "spiritual", but this is foolishness. Instead, ragamuffins focus on God's grace and enjoy God. If this were EASY to do, you could stop with this review. You wouldn't need Yancey or Manning to explain it again and again. But I find I really need people like Brennan Manning to lay it out for me.... The book has caused some controversy. Both Protestants and Catholics have claimed that it argues for "casual grace" or even that Manning is a universalist. Those charges are false (Manning deals with them in an appendix) but not everyone will agree with Manning's message. The author, a former Catholic priest, an alcoholic, divorced -- has painfully proven himself a ragamuffin and God is still in love with him, so maybe God can work in you and me? Enjoy the book. 5 stars (Enjoyable Read) - There is just something that stays with you when you read a book by Brennan Manning. Before digesting the Ragamuffin Gospel, I had never heard of the author. After reading the book, I was challenged to remove God from the box I had put him in, and I was drawn to explore more of Manning's writings. The Ragamuffin Gospel isn't just another book that will fill you full of God's expectations, and cram your "to do for God" list full of activities. Nor will the Ragamuffin Gospel remind you of all the Christ...

Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time- The Historical Jesus - the Heart of Contemporary Faith

4 stars (The future of christianity) - Fundementalists beware, your world may be shaken when you read this intelligent book. Borg is a great scholar and theologian. he has a nice touch and presents jesus in a believable and humble light without taking away the divine aspect. This is an antidote against religious fundementalists who wnat to own Jesus and create an exclusive cult they call christianity. 4 stars (Informative book about the historical Jesus) - I actually decided to read Borg's books after reading some of John Crossan's books where Borg was referenced. I thought the set-up of this book was extremely helpful in illustrating what Borg was discussing. However, I think I had hoped this would be more of a "heart-felt" novel. I understand Borg had to get in all the historical information about Jesus (and he did an incredible job at that) but I had hoped he would speak of Jesus on more of an emotional level. I felt as I was more of an outsider looking in on the life of Jesus rather than a comrade right next to him. And perhaps that is the effect Borg wanted. All in all, a great book with great information. What I found most interesting in this whole book was the link between Jesus and Sophia (wisdom). Borg makes an excellent point to contrast the "Son of God" image of Jesus by saying Jesus was personified as Wisdom- a feminine term in Greek. He does this to stress the many metaphors used when defining Jesus and says we must not take them literally. All in all a great read with great information. 5 stars (Dr. Borg is a gifted writer and loving Spirit filled person) - Before reading Marcus Borg's masterpiece "Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time" I was a self proclaimed agnostic. After reading it I realized I wasn't an agnostic, but an atheist to the God of conservative Christianity. Borg carefully and compassionately details another form of Christianity, a Christianity centered on love of neighbor, love of self, love of intellect and love of the God i...

Every Woman-s Battle - Discovering God-s Plan for Sexual and Emotional Fulfillment

2 stars (ugh) - like the other books in the series, it is rife with stereotypes. readers of these books would never guess from reading them that christian men and women have any sexual problems aside from piggish man who thinks only of satisfying his animal desires and wants a physicallyperfect specimen and woman who dont really like sex but because they have been attacked and/or didnt get enough attention from their daddies will grit their teeth and get through it to get the attention and romance. I am not demeaning the fact that this is some peoples story BUT dont go calling these books "everyman" and "everywoman". newsflash Shannon: there are women who struggle with real lust. there are women who want sex and thier husbands dont and they struggle to stay pure. there are women who are sick and tired of wondering what the hell is wrong with them because their issues are not just like yours. your problems are but a narrow slice of the christian pie. unfortunately, because Mr Arturburn and the folks he has found to coauthor his series are the only ones out there willing to talk about this stuff...people who fit the stereotypcial mold seem to make up the vast majority of people willing to open their mouths about their relationship difficulties. 5 stars (I would like to clarify something) - I have not read this book yet, but am going to soon. I just want to clarify for those who keep referring to "HIM" and "HE" that wrote the book. This book was written by a woman, not a man. Please pay attention, things like that really bother me. IF you are going to review a book, and be so very critical and mean spirited, at least get the facts right. The author is Shannon Ethridge. Thank you. 1 stars (One Lie After Another) - I've never read a book such as this in my life! It's more than obvious how the author didn't bother to put any original thought into the writing. Most of the book contains recycled myths about men wanting physical fullfillment, women wanting emotional fullfi...

Jesus I Never Knew- The

5 stars (Heart-healing for the Agnostic) - I found this book full of surprises, relevant to the secular-religious debate and an entertaining, thoughtful read. Yancey opened and enriched my perspective on Jesus. 5 stars (Thought provoking...) - It is an amazing book that forces me to look at Jesus from a totally different perspective. Basically, it appars that God accepted Job's implied challenge to see the world through "Human" eyes, and history is made and the world is changed forever. Excellent reading... 3 stars (I wanted more.) - I wanted more. Miracles, Yancey quotes C.S Lewis stating that miracles work by natural laws. When Jews changed the water too wine suggested natural laws were used to create the miracle. This is not rationale to me. The logic goes as follows, the water was consumed by the grape, the grapes grows from nutrients and sunlight, the grape is harvested, the grape juices ferment, the end result is wine. The wine is a product of natural, mechanical, and manufacturing processes, a feat reproduceable by any mortal. What about the parting of the red Sea? One could state, this phenomena was the result of high speed winds that separated the water, dried out the land, and allowed the children of Israel to cross over, and as the Egyptians attempted the crossing, the wind stopped blowing, and the water buryed the Egyptians. So, Natural laws combine with time manipulation explaining the miracle. The implication being that if man could manipulate time and mechanical processes, any miracle could be performed by applying natural laws. Furthermore, one could might conclude miracles are a lack of scientific knowledge and if one possessed such knowledge there would be no miracle just rational application of information. For example, if a bioengineering gene therapy was used to kill cancer cells then the miracle is the application of the medicene, not a divine intervention. People would not be inclined to thank a loving God for their miracle bu...

The Theology of the Body According to John Paul II- Human Love in the Divine Plan Parish Resources

4 stars (Theology of the Body - ) - Theology of the Body (T.O.B) gives a dynamic vision of the human person. Pope John Paul discusses human sexuality, vocation (marriage, religious life, etc) through the lense of biblical revelation. PJ II quotes Vatican II in saying that we are the only creatures on earth "that were willed for their own sake" (Lumen Gentium 26). All the other creatures were created for mankind. Humans were commanded to rule the other creatures. I found T.O.B to be the best exegesis of Genesis. Truly brilliant and amazing. I was so inspired that I am devoting part of my next book on this very topic. PJ II tells us that Adam and Eve didn't merely want to be equal with God but they sought to usurp their Creator. They were sharing in the love of God and so they weren't inferior to God. However they believed in the word of a creature over that of the Creator and thought they could take God's throne and take His power! Yes it is a correlation between human sexuality and God. But it is even more than that. It is about the dignity of the Human Person and Psychosomatic Unity of the Human Person. In giving of ourselves so totally we discover who we are. This is what happened with Adam. He was alone and could not identify with the animals until Eve came from His rib (or as the late Pope puts it, his heart - wow!) Pope John Paull II does not use the word "SEX" as contemporary society does. He uses it to refer to male or female. Personally I think the word "sex" depersonalises a sacred act. Let me explain. The Catholic Church uses the word Conjugal Union. This refers to a union of body and soul and open to the gift or trasmission of life. Ok, so it may be a mouthful, "Conjugal Union" and take a bit to get used to. Let me challenge you to learn it and use it in discussions. Another word used is "Conjugal Love" Doesn't this sound better than making love. Through Conjugal love the husband gives himself totally body and soul to his wife and his wife gives...

Catholicism for Dummies

5 stars ( Catholicism for Dummies ) - AWESOME BOOK and I am not nearly done! Just the mini history of Catholicism in the appendix has been very interesting and a good learning experience for this cradle Catholic. 5 stars (very reliable) - This is a trustworthy book written by Catholic clergy who understand tradition, dogma and doctrine, believe it, and can present it truthfully. It's great for just about anyone, rather cradle Catholic looking to learn a little more or non-Catholic unfamiliar with the faith. I read it around the time of the election of Pope Benedict, and I learned a great deal about the heirarchy. I also thought other sections, such as the one on the vestments, were interesting. These are things Catholics don't learn much about because they are not of major consequence. But don't let that fool you - there is plenty of important information in this book. A great summary of Catholic beliefs! Stay away from Idiots Guide to Catholicism and get this book instead. :) 5 stars (Great Beginner's Book) - This book is a great read for anyone. If your thinking about becoming Catholic, know someone who is, or you just want some more information on the Catholic religion in general then this book is for you. I found this book to be very informational and easy to follow. If you're looking for more information on the general traditions and guidelines of Catholicism, this is a wonderful starting point for that. Overall, it's a great addition to your library. ...

Mere Christianity

1 stars (didn't recieve that product/ credit card was billed) - i never received that book even though my cc was charged. it might have been sent in august but i wonder if they are still printing the book for me?? and walking it to maryland. i do not recommedn this source and had i known this would happen i never would have used amazon.com 1 stars (Flimsy arguments tell Christians what they want to hear.) - I'd read on a website about an atheist who'd converted to Christianity after reading this book, and C.S. Lewis tells readers that he was once an atheist himself. Since I'd love to believe that some Big Grand-Daddy in the Sky is going to make atrocities like George W.'s presidency all right in the end, I gave it a shot. I really did go into it with an open mind, but I was sorely disappointed. In essence, C.S. Lewis's argument is that since humans know right from wrong, we must be getting that notion from somewhere; hence, there must be a god who gives it to us. He dismisses the idea that right and wrong could be hardwired into the human brain by millions of years of evolution by saying the following: You cannot claim that the sense of right and wrong is instinctive because (a) we can have competing instincts, and (b) we often choose to morally follow the weaker of the competing instincts. He gives the example of the instinct to save a drowning man and claims that most people would experience two instincts in that situation--to wit, one to save the man and one to not put oneself in danger--and that the moral man would choose to act on the weaker of the instincts in order to save the man. According to C.S. Lewis, the decision-making that allows us to govern between instincts to choose the moral or immoral course of action comes from god. In a matter of a few minutes, C.S. Lewis dismisses--erroneously, I believe--the idea that morality is a complex biological process whereby the mind sorts through various drives, with the executive decision-making process ...

St Thomas Aquinas Summa Theologica translated by Fathers of the English Dominican Province 5 Volu

5 stars (Better than the Oxford Blackfriars) - Of course, the Oxford Blackfriar's 60-volume edition would bankrupt most of us by it's sheer expense. But if one wants an English translation opposite the Latin original, it's certainly the reference work that many scholars prefer. For the rest of us, the English Dominican Fathers' translation of the early 20thC. is very, very good indeed. It's single virtue is that the same translation of words is used consistently throughout, even if the particular choice of words might not strike 21stC. readers in quite the same way. Some of the language is beginning to show its wear and tear, but once one is in the mindset, the reading is exceptionally clear. For those new to Aquinas, his methodology may strike some readers as odd. It's really a simple, yet elegant, system. First, Aquinas poses a question to be answered. Then he gives a variety of answers from others in the past. When you see, "but I reply," then you know you're getting to nugget of Aquinas' gems. After his reply, he responds to each of the previous author's opinions, stating why or how they are in any way deficient. Several features become instantly obvious. Aquinas had an encyclopedic mind and a good knowledge of Patristic and Aristotlean thought. Whenever possible, his answers are an a priori synthesis of the best Patristics and the best of Aristotle. These five, dense volumes in this edition illustrate the majestic scope of his enterprise. (His Summa Contra Gentiles is very similar.) There isn't really a subject or vantage that Aquinas doesn't cover. All his Summas are really magisterial (in the non-ecclesiastical sense). Lastly, Aquinas' command of the syllogism is unparalleled in human history. This is at once both its strength and its weakness. Strength in the sense of deductive logic, weakness in the sense of inductive logic. I'm convinced one can use the syllogism to argue just about anything, and if Aquinas is an example, he's an example of this mastery...

The Four Loves

4 stars (CS Lewis, The Four Loves ) - A very deep and thoughtful work, from which there is much to be learnt. It is not the type of work that can be read in haste or in one sitting. The discussion on the four loves are much too intense to be glossed over. It is well suited not only for the deeply religious but also for anyone desirous of a greater understanding of the many and important attributes of this one simple word Love. 5 stars (Four Loves by C.S. Lewis) - This is the finest book I have ever read on love outside of the Bible. Lewis' insights on friendship define what true friendship is and cautions us that those who we call friends for lack of a better word have value and admonishes us not "to desparage silver because it is not gold". He encourages us that if natural love is to see eternity, it must be committed to Charity Himself. An excellent book and profitable to everyone. 5 stars (Affection, Eros, Friendship, Charity: The Four Loves ) - C.S. Lewis wrote this book late in his life after he had experienced love with a colleague in writing. He gives sound advice that I believe applies to a broader base than his usual Christian readership. The four loves are: Affection, Eros, Friendship, and Charity. Each type of love has a chapter dedicated to a fuller explanation. My favorite section is the one he wrote on Friendship. I think he is honest about limitations we place on who becomes our friends. Many believe any two people can become good friends, when in reality, this is just not so. Friends are people who share some vision or passion in life. That vision or passion is the cement of the common bond. Lewis had deep friendships with interesting people, such as Tolkien. He even elaborates on his own experiences with such companions. Charity is the true form of love. Charity is the deepest form of giving our feeling, freedom, and even our very selves, to each other and finally, to God, whom Lewis calls "Love Himself." There...

Systematic Theology

3 stars (Do you know Latin?) - Hodge's work is one of the great reformed theologies ever done. For myself, though, I feel like I missed out on much of it because I don't read Latin! There are too many passages that are written in Latin and then expounded in English. If you don't read Latin, I would recommend "Great Doctrines of the Bible," by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, or " Systematic Theology ," by Loius Berkhof. 4 stars (Note Latin is deleted not translated) - Note that the long latin quotations in the original book have simply been deleted, not translated. Still worthwhile even if many sections go over the head of the average reader--many other sections are accessible and made me exclaim "he is the Reformed C. S. Lewis". 1 stars (Abridged? Decimated!) - Anyone wanting to read Hodge, should go with the three volume edition. Yes, there is far too much interaction with the pseudo-science of the day, but this "abridgement" lays waste to whole areas of interest to anyone who would want to read Hodge in the first place. It's interesting that one of the areas where the cutting is most obvious is in the area where the "editor" disagrees with Hodge the most, that is the locus of "eschatology". The editor is a Premillennialist and Hodge, like all Princetonians was a clear Postmillennialist. If you want to read Hodge without the excess verbiage, buy A.A Hodge's "Outlines of Theology", which is based on the very same lectures that Charles Hodge published as his Systematics. It's simpler, yet doesn't alter the truth the way this chopped-up mess does. This abridgement is a master maligned. ...

Catechism of the Catholic Church

5 stars (Intelligent Presentation Of Roman Catholic Doctrine) - Of everything that came out of the twenty-six years of John Paul II's pontificate, I believe this book is the most important and will have the most lasting impact. I love how this expertly-composed book removed so much of the confrontation-inducing confusion about Church doctrine and made teachings clear. This is a sort of "rule book" for the game of Catholic life. Anyone within or outside the faith can easily find answers to questions about what Catholicism teaches is right and wrong. In the process this admirably useful and straightforward work can readily dispel many persistant myths about the world's largest and most frequently misunderstood religion. I joked to friends in high school, about the time this first revision of catechism in 400 years came out, that unless we read this book "how are we going to know what we should stop doing?" But there's much more than that to the catechism. This is akin to a written constitution for a religion founded in stages of revelation and fits of growth spurts that lasted in some cases for centuries. Is it the all-time final word on Catholic beliefs? Probably not. But for this present age it is exactly the document needed for the education of the world in which the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church resides. 5 stars (An endlessly fascinating source.) - "If God...the creator of the ordered...world, cares for his creatures, why does EVIL exist? To this question, as pressing as it is unavoidable and as painful as it is mysterious, no quick answer will suffice. [...] There is not a single aspect of the Christian message that is not in part an answer to the question of evil." [CCC, Part One, Paragraph 309.] Here it is, the Catholic synthesis of that answer: an absorbing, utterly monumental one. This book, more than anything else, constitutes the late pope John Paul II's real legacy to the world: an immensely important contribution to man's life. Written in ...

Blue Like Jazz- Nonreligious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality

5 stars (wonderful!) - This book was wonderful! I would recommend it to anyone, especially those who don't like Christians or for Christians to challenge them to go deeper and find real freedom. It's worth it, whatever the cost. 5 stars (One Man's "Garbage", Another Man's Treasure ) - This is one of those books that brings out the beauty and honesty of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Don understands that the only way we can survive this world is through community in the body of Christ, and the only way that can happen is through honesty. Miller uses his testimony to tackle some tough issues like freedom and artistic creativity. He also reminds us through expereinces with his 'liberal friends' what Christ looks like when it comes to social action and where many follwers of Christ have been taking naps. "There is no holiness but social holiness". Miller is able to paint a picture of who he is in a way that, when you put down the book, you feel like you just had a conversation with him. This book isn't scripture, it's an autobiography [Which means it's about his personal life experiences :) ]. Donald Miller's testimony is one that has the potential to impact many people. Pick up this book today! 5 stars (Not a 5-step guide to living the Christian life - just one person's perspective on life and Christianity.) - After reading some of the reviews posted, I decided to write one of my own. I'd like people to remember that this book isn't a step by step guide on how to live the Christian life. I don't think Donald Miller's intentions (if I may be so bold) are anything other than getting the reader to think about his or her own flawed thinking about Jesus and Christianity. Some of the reviewers (Garbage comes to mind) ironically fall into that fundamentalist, legalistic category that Miller has written about in his book. I think Miller just wants us to be as honest with ourselves regarding our beliefs and lives and direction, as he has been with hi...

Jesus the Rabbi Prophet - A New Light on the Gospel Message

5 stars (A fresh look at Jesus the man) - I really enjoyed reading this book and discovering many aspects about Jesus the man and the sociological context in which he lived. I particularly appreciated that this book has no theological agenda. It presents conflicting views of Jesus'life, yet no sides are taken. 1 stars (A modern gnostic view of Jesus' life) - If you are not a Christian, this book would be a poor introduction to Christianity and will probably have little appeal to you since it does not present Jesus as a religious figure. If you are a Christian, the mere assumption that there are "literary creations" within the Gospels will draw you away from this book. Of course, if you're an atheist, this book will hold no appeal for you. So this book begs the question: who is it written for? The writer tries his best to pretend to be impartial in his view of Jesus, but to say he comes up short would be a stretch. Rule number one of an impartial approach to any study is not to bring your own assumptions into your subject. But that is not what the author does. In fact, from page one he assumes that the Gospels are full of mere "literary creations", and that dooms the book from the start. Bottom line about any study performed on the figure, historical or otherwise, of Jesus is to approach the subject willing to consider that whoever wrote the Gospels was either a)inspired by the Holy Spirit as it is widely believed by Christians or b)that the authors had no need to embelish the life of Jesus since His teachings and works were pretty amazing of themselves. If you're not willing to consider any of these two possibilities, you will end up with the biased study contained in this book. This book takes the gnostic approach to Jesus: that he was simply a man. A great man, whose teachings were intended to start a theological revolution much like Muhammad (Mohammed) or Confucius, but just a man. It casts doubt upon the veracity of the works of Jesus, including...

Knowledge of the Holy - Reissue

5 stars (A Must Read for Christians) - Tozer's premise for writing this book is that all of us, especially Christians who should know better, have too low a view of God. In our minds we tend to minimize His power and bring Him down to our level, rather than holding Him in reverence. Unfortunately, Tozer claims, this inhibits us Christians from being who we should be in Christ, and there has been a cyclical effect for the last 100 years. Tozer uses each chapter to describe an attribute of God and how it should be viewed, and uses the Bible and other sources to support it. Each chapter is short but very deep; take your time reading it and meditating on it. Our Sunday school class is currently doing a Bible study with this book as the source for our discussions, and using each chapter to point us back to Scripture. Both Christians and non-Christians will enjoy this book. 5 stars (Knowledge of the Holy.) - If you really want to take your view of God outside the established christian box, this book will give you food for thought. 4 stars (Knowledge of the Holy) - Another of Dr. A.W. Tozer's best-known works. This book is a brief overview of the attributes of God. No single attribute can be emphasized to the exclusion of any other. All are important and Dr. Tozer touches on all of them. A very readable and valuable resource to show Christians more about the awesome nature of our Heavenly Father. A very useful book for anyone who wants to know more about God. ...
