Life Application Study Bible- New International Version

5 stars (Incredible help for new Christians) - As a new Christian, I fumbled around with all kinds of different translations, formats, etc. At first, I ended up with a parallel bible. While I would recommend a parallel bible to experienced Christians, I would not recommend it to new Christians. After sitting in a bookstore for hours looking through all of the formats and translations, I decided that this one was definitely it. The NIV translation is accurate and easy to read while the study portion of this bible has been an incredible help to me. God Bless! 5 stars (For those who want to walk with Christ) - The Life Application Study Bible perfected a trend in the production of Bibles that began about thirty years ago. Prior to that most of the Bibles published were plain text or reference editions. These were limited in that they provided the uninformed reader with no explanatory guide through the difficult pages of Scripture. Two types of Bibles then began to emerge. First, study Bibles, which focused primarily of historical, literary and theological questions. Second, "devotional" Bibles, which catered primarily for personal spirituality (i.e. what does this mean for ME?). The Life Application combines both these approaches in a single attractive volume and is perfectly suited to anyone with no special expertise in biblical studies and especially helpful to those who want to read the Bible as a way of deepening their own spiritual life. The notes are not exclusively "spiritual" and "personal" but do provide answers to difficult critical biblical questions. The format is clear and easy to read. The LAB comes in various translations, including the NIV and the New Living Translation. 5 stars (L.A.B. is a GREAT study Bible for Pastors !!!) - WOW! What can I say @ the L.A.B. Bible that has not already been said by others? I am a Baptist Church Sr. Pastor, and I now preach/teach 4 sermons per week. I have many great Bibles in my peresonal Bible collection (old ...

The DNA of Relationships

4 stars (Not just for married people) - I thought this would be a really stupid marriage book when our church started this study (and I'm single so I didn't want a stupid marriage study), but I have really enjoyed the videos, the book, and the downloadable study guide. I decided to take the study seriously and discovered this book is a practical guide to how to make ANY relationship better. The review at the end of each chapter is a quick way to refresh your mind on the main points of what the previous chapter taught. The quiz at the end of the book is great and helps you to identify your core fears - what sets you off in what Smalley calls the "Fear Dance," when you have conflicts with others. Each conflict boils down to one of two core fears - fear loss of connection, or fear of loss of control. Women usually have the first fear, and men the second, though there is overlap. ALL fears we have boil down to one of these two. I have learned that I need to take responsibility for my buttons and allowing people to push them (the chapter "The Power of One"). No one can make me do or feel anything. This book has also forced me to take a hard look at myself and how I treat others, and whether I have created an anvironment where they feel safe to share their heart with me. 4 stars (Makes sense to m) - The book is easy to read, and the exercises really make you think. My ex and I are going through this book with our pastor to see if there's any hope of reconciling and so far it's helped us realize all the things we did wrong in our marriage and why. It's helping us to take the focus off who's to blame and refocusing on what's the right thing to do. We're about 2/3 of the way through the book so we haven't finished it yet, but I expect the rest of it will be as helpful as what we've already covered. I'd recommend this book for anyone considering a serious relationship, in the middle of a relationship, or trying to rebuild one. It does a good job of covering them all. ...

The Ezekiel Option- A Novel

1 stars (ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE) - Most boring book I've read in a long time. If I wanted more info about prophesies and the "last days", I would read the Bible or the "Left Behind" series. This is a religious pamphlet disguised as a novel 4 stars (A Good Credible Account Of The Future.) - It took me four days to read the Ezekiel Option cover to cover. The story was well written and probably had a more elitist appeal than the populous interest of the Left Behind series. Nevertheless, the writing was more concise and better articulated with a fuller dimensionality to all the characters involved. The biggest factor about the book is a peek into a probable future drawn from biblical prophecy and its interpretation. The fact that it is based upon a fictitious environment makes it all the more readable. It is highly digestible and it picks up approximately two to four weeks before the rapture of the church. The only troubling aspect of the book is the much too touted benevolent light that it paints of our government and the agencies supposedly representing the people at large. Come on, the NSA, CIA, FEMA, and the Oval Office approachable by the average citizenry?! Other than that, you can actually relate to the characters on a more than superficial level. The action and intrigue are fast-paced and the opulent settings that the characters live in because of their stature and importance is laudable. Who's paying for it anyway? The fact that a large number of people have to die to achieve world progress is appalling at best when God through Jesus Christ is going to overturn it anyway as described in this work of fiction. Personally, I think The Ezekiel Option answers a lot of questions concerning the End Times and the catastrophes to come in an entertaining novelization of one possible future. 5 stars (massive anxiety attack) - I'm only half way through and the reason I haven't finished is that I'm scared. I'm dying to get back into it yet it's so frigh...

Shadowed- The Final Judgment

5 stars (A Call to Courage) - Once again corraling his skills in sci-fi-ish mysteries, Jerry has provided another title with a deeper purpose. That's to cause readers to ask how valuable they regard their faith in the God who's promised to put a punctuation mark on the end of history. Jerry's books are in a league by themselves. Yes, he crafts page-turner novels. But he also forces us to put ourselves in the characters' shoes and ask what we'd do if our lives depended on what we believed as eternally true. ...

The Life Recovery Bible- New Living Translation

5 stars (My favorite bible.) - This bible is a must for anyone in recovery. My favorite bible, helps me to remember where I came from. 5 stars (Outstanding Bible) - I own many good Bibles, but this one is in a class by itself. It's directly relevant to day-to-day life. It's outstanding! This Bible deserves more thatn a five-star rating. 5 stars (Nothing Short of God's Miracle (INFINITY STARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!)) - This Bible gives the Word of God to those going through recovery in a translation that is easily applicable to today's readers' lifes and is easily read and understood by those who read it. It also supplies readers with all the footnotes used in the translation. But what makes this Bible stand out from any others is the amount of devotional material it contains. Each of the 66 books has reflections on recovery at the beginning and then end of the book. Also, it contains footnotes with recovery reflections on almost every passage of scripture imaginable! The Bible gives readers 84 12 step devotionals, as well as numerous devotionals on the 8 principles of recovery (the beattitudes) and the serenity prayer. It has an abundant index of topical references that anyone could use. I have only been in recovery for about a month, but this Bible has given me profound insight to the 12 steps and has been a key tool in aiding my recovery. I am thoroughly convinced that the Bible is anyone's key to recovery, and this Bible is an almost necessary item to complete that faith-based recovery. I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY reccommend this Bible, and if I could give it an infinite number of stars, I would!!!!! ...

Glorious Appearing- The End of Days Left Behind -12

5 stars (A Satisfying Ending or A New Beginning?) - I found this to be a great final chapter in this amazing series which has kept me spellbound for much of the past year as I read all 12 books. However, it is also clear that there's more to come, that this is by no means an ending but the commencement of a new series - one which I also look forward to with great eagerness. The characters, the storylines, the suspense, the cliffhanger endings all have been and I'm sure will continue to be memorable and mesmerizing! 5 stars (The Left Behind series gets better with each one) - I had an experience when I was young that made it difficult for me to read the book of Revelations. A Bible Study leader depicted the last coming as hopeless to all humans, and made God seem so vengeful that I turned away. I quit bible study and I quit reading the bible. It was not until I read the first Left Behind book that I realized that interpretation of Revelations can be fearful but not without hope. I read each book as it came out and slowly returned to reading the bible. This is scary stuff told as a fictional story, but it gives us all a reason to read and learn and to love and trust God. This book, Glorious Appearing: The End of Days continues to inspire and entertain at the same time. 1 stars (Glorious Appearing less than glorious) - Adequately describing the return of Christ in words would be next to impossible, but even given that disclaimer, this was one of the worst books I have ever read ... er, skimmed. The first few books in this series were captivating, but as the series dragged on, they became less and less interesting. The repetition in this book is almost nauseating (as one might expect when the events of 24 hours are described over 400 pages!). On the plus side, it only took a few hours to get through it ... ...

Hands On Bible- New Living Translation

5 stars (Hands On gets a big Thumbs Up) - I have been working with kids and their families for over ten years, and I think this is the best Bible for kids I have ever come across. The NLT is an easy read that makes sense to kids and yet maintains the integrity of being a translation and not a paraphrase. The Bible has a fun look and feel for kids and plenty of age appropriate helps. What puts this Bible over the top though, is the Hands On suggestions that serve as object lessons for key scriptures. If you are a parent looking for creative ideas to teach your kid God's word then this Bible is for you. Check it out for yourself, you won't be disappointed. 5 stars (A Great Resource!) - We use this Bible in our after school clubs. It really attracts children and entices them to read the Bible! I love the features it has: highlighting important verses (common memory verses); activities throughout; occational "Key Verse" hightlights that give deeper insight to a verse; "Fun Facts" interspersed in the text. I am also impressed with the appendices: LOTS of helpful information about the Bible for those who are new to reading it (like our club kids!); a personal Bible reading plan for kids; family devotions (I use some of these ideas in my teaching!); a dictionary/concordance; and maps! WOW! This Bible is packed! And NLT is a great translation for kids who are not familiar with "Christianese." I HIGHLY recommend this Bible! (My own kids are now asking for one...) 5 stars (Incredible resource for families) - As a pastor of family ministries I struggle with providing resources that allow parents to engage their children in spiritual training in a fun and relevant way. This Bible, while written for children, can be used as a resource for the entire family for family devotionals or fun facts. The Bible has a lot of devotionals in the back that are great for getting the family talking and getting the children reading. ...
