Chemistry - The Molecular Nature of Matter and Change

5 stars (My Story with Chemistry and Silberberg) - I am a chemistry major, that does not translate to "I like chemistry" but more along the lines that it was the only feasible premedical degree major. I never did chemistry in High School and suffered tremendously with the thought of majoring in a science that I was unfamiliar with. What if I hated it? What if I wasnt any good at it? these were questions that haunted me prior to starting my degree. When I did commence, I found textbooks to be very costly and wanted the best for my money. I realized that the price of a textbook does not make it good, nor the length of it. In saying so I started my chemistry studies with two books, one known as Basic Concepts of Chemistry by Malone, published by Wiley and the second was this. Chemistry the Molecular Nature of Matter and Change by Silberberg, published by Mcgraw Hill. The first book helped establish an understanding of the fundamentals of chemistry, it was an excellant transition from the layman's english into the scientific paradigm. However when one is doing undergraduate chemistry especially in a premedical degree, it ends up not only being a study but a competition. I found both these books to take me, an Individual who knew absolutely nothing about chemistry without any prior education in the science to someone who is now relaxed even with Organic Chemistry. My liking and my understanding of chemistry came directly from these two books. I still treasure them to this day and would suggest anyone in my position to get these books. I have seen and in detail read over 13 general chemistry books from Cheng to Atkins and even Zumdahl. I would deem these two (Malone and Silberberg) to be the best of all of them. However I do suggest that you peruse through various textbooks in a library prior to buying as an author's writing style matters a lot. Most people who have an issue with Silberberg see him as being too pleonastic however I would think that he gives substan...

Psychology- Sixth Edition

3 stars (BEWARE: paperback edition and hardcover are different books!) - Actually I'm reviewing the paperback edition; Amazon has a bug in this one. I wanted to buy the "text book" of Psychology so I checked the hardcover, there in the tab "other editions" I noticed a paperback edition (which was $100 cheaper) so i followed the link, after reading the reviews and "looking inside the book" I decided to buy the paperback edition (the reviews and the "look inside the book" were supposedly for the paperback edition). The problem was when I received the book... it wasn't the book but the "study guide" (which is worthless without the book) I went back to Amazon and checked carefully and alas when I went to the paperback edition there is a slight change in the title (which one doesn't check again because it's supposed to be the same book) but the reviews and everything else is the same which is VERY misleading. I already sent them an e-mail asking them to change this, but for the meantime be careful. P.S: I rated with 3 stars because I had to put something I'll fix it when I get the hardcover edition and I can actually use it. 5 stars (Text for Honors Introductory Psychology) - I've used the text for my honors section of Psych 101 and as a source for lecture material in my other sections. IMHO, this the the best textbook for Intro Psych that I have ever come across in terms of the depth of material presented. It is, however, probably too difficult for the large lecture hall sections or sections taught entirely by graduate students. For these sections I would recommend David Myers' textbook. Much more student-friendly, and still an excellent source of information. Fridlund, et al., is still the gold standard. 5 stars (Outstanding, comprehensive "intro." book.) - This introduction text represents a "tour de force" in dealing with a complex subject. Psychology is divided into 5 sections dealing with Action, Cognition, Social Behavior, Development, and Indivi...

Adolescence with PowerWeb

4 stars (Good) - I have taken many Psychology classes. This book is clear and well illustrated. There is room for improvement but this is a great textbook. 5 stars (An Excellent Review of Relevant Research and Theories) - This is an excellent text for adolescent development. It is an easy read for undergraduate students and it provides summaries of a variety of current research projects. I have used Steinberg's text for two years to teach a course in adolescent development and I have yet to find a better undergraduate text on adolescence. 5 stars (Excellent resource) - Steinberg is an incredible writer and a top researcher. This textbook is the best of its type. ...

Biochemistry Chapters 1-34

1 stars (Only thoughts: WTF!!) - I helped teach three terms of upper division biochemistry with this book and this book is terrible!! Don't get this confused with the Stryer book (although he is listed as an author, the book IS NOT written in his style). For non-biochem people, get the real Stryer book and for biochem people get the Matthews or the Voet book. 1 stars (OMG! A how to manual for a badly written book) - I needed to purchase this book for my graduate class in biochemistry. I found it to be NOT user friendly in the least. Most books I have used for biochemistry come with a great set of definitions. This book not only doesn't come with an appendix with definitions but doesn't explicitely define words in the text. I finally found the "definitions" appendix at the only website (how nice of them...and how cheap can you get. Most books if they have a website also have definitions in the back). I should also mention it does not have a thorough index. Major subjects are neither defined nor shown in the index. Several times I had to go to either my organic chem book (Morrison & Boyd...great book), the Lippencotes (spelling) biochemistry review text (also a great concise book), or my under graduate biochemistry book (and study guide. Garrett and Grisham) to find information due to either the lack of information in this book or difficulty in finding it. Also, the layout of the book is terrible. Although proteins are now THE significant phase of biochemistry, the introduction of DNA and mRNA in later portions of the book is rediculous. If you follow the basic flow of genetic information from DNA to RNA to Protein it is much more easily understood. Throwing in the flow of genetic information at chapter 5 and later in chapter 27 discussing DNA replication, RNA synthesis and splicing (ch 28) and protein production (ch 29) makes no sense whatsoever. The order is correct but to place this information at the back of the book when it is necessary to un...

Thomson Advantage Books- Reason and Responsibility - Readings in Some Basic Problems of Philosophy

5 stars (fast shipping) - this is an old edition. but practically there is no difference. i saved a lot on this item. shipping is fast too 5 stars (Great Introductory Book) - I highly recommend Feinberg's 'Reason and Responsibility' to beginning philosophers. Feinberg presents various philosophical topics in an organized manner and selects text that is easy to understand for readers new to philosophy. Readers are weaned into the language of philosophy by first being presented with the jargon in the beginning of each section. It's a great book that covers a variety of topics, from arguments about God's existence to ethics to abortion. 5 stars (Great Anthology) - It is unclear whether my previous attempt to write a review of this book went through or not. If not, here goes again: A disclaimer: I have absolutely no connection with the authors or publishers and stand to benefit in no way from the sale of this book. My background: MA in philosophy and have taught as a teaching assistant on a number of philosophy courses at university level. Review: This is the best anthology of philosophical writing that I am aware of. It's strength lies in the range of readings it includes. The editors have, it seems, stayed very involved with their book and update the readings every few years. As a result this anthology includes some very recent material in addition to the classics. so, the reader has available to him/her a collection of writings that span nearly 2,500 years of Western philosophy. Note: it is an anthology of philosophy in the western tradition. A second notable strength of Reason and Responsibility is the introductory essays that appear at the start of each section. These are clear and especially helpful to those new to philosophy. It is also noteworthy that the editors have attempted to compile readings that give the reader a sense of the two sides to any given debate. This is not always the case with anthologies. One word of warning for those new to philosophy: mu...

Fundamentals of Psychology - The Brain- The Person- The World 2nd Edition

4 stars (An excellent introduction to the world of psychology) - The fascinating world of psychology - with its clinical, counseling, and research umbrellas - is one of the most consistently sought-after fields among laymen and student prospectives today. Almost every person, it seems, is interested in psychology in some degree - but carichatured presentations of the science in the mass media has given it a general unfortunate stereotyped profession. The layman or common person interested in psychology, then, needs a useful, informative text to introduce them to the ins and outs of the science. This book serves as a great introduction. Used as a textbook in introductory psychology courses in colleges throughout the nation, it is a useful tool for sparking your interest in the field. Thankfully, unlike many textbooks and books of this kind, it manages to avoid putting the personal issues and agendas of the author(s) too much to the forefront, and focuses instead on objective, factual information: the book uses a very technical approach that may seem dry to some, but which is ultimately worthwhile for the reader. A highly reccommended introductory text. ...

Psychology- The Brain- The Person- The World- Second Edition

5 stars (Excellent Introduction to the Field of Psychology) - I had this book as a textbook for my intro to psych class. It is a well written text. Unlike most textbooks, it is not dry or boring. This book uses examples for it's concepts, such as Tiger Wood's golf game and Alice in Wonderland. It also has diagrams, definitions, graphs, tables, and mini-experiments to back up and sum up the text. In short, it is set up well for any type of learner. The text covers many areas of psychology, including the history, the brain, sense and perception, consciousness, learning, emotion, and disorders. I would definitely recommend it for a class or an ambitious solo reader. ...

Social Psychology- Unraveling the Mystery

4 stars (the doors of cognition !) - this book opens the doors of cognition ; in fact , when tiing a famous person ( ie : demora , luther king , kenwrinkel ) to notions of social psychology like ( social role , influence , aggression , etc ) , it allows our memory to widen , and teach a method to learn more and more easily ! that is , build couples : idea and picture ! this book uses cognition methods and invite us to study that field ! ... opening the doors of cognition ...teaches too , that very simple tools may have terrific and positive effects ! 5 stars (Social Psychology: Unraveling the Mystery) - The most valuable benefits of adopting this book for my class was the unbelievable support from the publisher. A&B provided a study guide, a test bank, a huge package of transparencies, a powerpoint presentation CD...--all of this for free. I have been astonished by the sevice and free benfits I have gotten as the result of choosing this otherwise excellent book. Let's hope the competition emulates this author and publisher. 5 stars (Mr. Cialdini's comments) - After reading Mr. Cialdini's comments about his book, I wondered: is he trying to employ his "scarcity principle" to influence book sales? ;) ...

The Ezekiel Option- A Novel

1 stars (ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE) - Most boring book I've read in a long time. If I wanted more info about prophesies and the "last days", I would read the Bible or the "Left Behind" series. This is a religious pamphlet disguised as a novel 4 stars (A Good Credible Account Of The Future.) - It took me four days to read the Ezekiel Option cover to cover. The story was well written and probably had a more elitist appeal than the populous interest of the Left Behind series. Nevertheless, the writing was more concise and better articulated with a fuller dimensionality to all the characters involved. The biggest factor about the book is a peek into a probable future drawn from biblical prophecy and its interpretation. The fact that it is based upon a fictitious environment makes it all the more readable. It is highly digestible and it picks up approximately two to four weeks before the rapture of the church. The only troubling aspect of the book is the much too touted benevolent light that it paints of our government and the agencies supposedly representing the people at large. Come on, the NSA, CIA, FEMA, and the Oval Office approachable by the average citizenry?! Other than that, you can actually relate to the characters on a more than superficial level. The action and intrigue are fast-paced and the opulent settings that the characters live in because of their stature and importance is laudable. Who's paying for it anyway? The fact that a large number of people have to die to achieve world progress is appalling at best when God through Jesus Christ is going to overturn it anyway as described in this work of fiction. Personally, I think The Ezekiel Option answers a lot of questions concerning the End Times and the catastrophes to come in an entertaining novelization of one possible future. 5 stars (massive anxiety attack) - I'm only half way through and the reason I haven't finished is that I'm scared. I'm dying to get back into it yet it's so frigh...

100 People Who Are Screwing Up America

4 stars (these reviews are ideal) - in showing the split in America's political seam. Um, I don't imagine there'll be a melding-of-the-minds anytime soon. Both sides are right, of course, and both are wrong. Everyone seems to agree America's going to hell in a hand basket and whose fault is it? Why it's your fault, and it's my fault, and it's that guys fault and well, there's a lotta fault to go around...cause everyone really knows how the world runs, or is supposed to run and if only THEY just listened to ME...cause I know, I really do...I'm well learned and stuff. Hey, don't sweat it, lighten up, a book like this is fun...even if it contributes to the problem. To quote L. Cohen "I'm not left or right, I'm just staying in tonight" Peace and Love 4 stars (Good book) - This is a good read. Some of the people mentioned are not well known, so I cannot comment on their appearance in the book, but I certainly agree with Goldberg on those whose names I do recognize, although not always in the sequence that he places them. Still, Goldberg points out the absurd conduct of a lot of the bad actors in our country. 1 stars (Unfunny neo-con propaganda) - If you're Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh or anyone who would associate with any of them, you'll love this book. Otherwise, this is a failed attempt at Al Franken satire with some of the most forced humor I've ever read in a book of its kind. The section about Al Franken was desperate (not to mention he hid the cuss words behind asterisks - wouldn't want Brent Bozell to read this book and have a stroke), the diatribe about Eminem sounds like something Andy Rooney would write in 15 years when he's even older and MORE out of touch, and although I agree with his assessment of #95, Courtney Love (all he wrote was the word "ho"), he resorts to this writing device too often without bothering to explain why people such as Love are such a threat to America. Not to mention that it sounds about as embarrassing, cringe-...
