Maitre Cornelius

Quote, "In short, sire, I found myself this morning robbed of those jewels you admired so much. They have been ravished from me, sire! To steal the jewels of the Elector of Bavaria! those scoundrels respect nothing! they'll steal your kingdom if you don't take care. As soon as I missed the jewels I went up to the room of that apprentice, who is, assuredly, a past-master in thieving. This time we don't lack proof...

Nice Girls Don-t Get the Corner Office- 101 Unconscious Mistakes Women Make That Sabotage Their Care

5 stars (A must read for any Woman in a "man's" world) - This book is beyond helpful, and is presented in a manner that allows the reader to not only evaluate herself, but to immediately put into action solutions to potential problems. Each chapter is broken down into subjects that can affect a woman's progress up the ladder, with a mistake listed on one page and solutions to apply to the workplace on the next. This is a no-nonsense book that is written by a woman for women, so "quit bein' a girl" and buy this book! The insight and results are more than impressive - they're life changing. 2 stars (Thinly Veiled Misogyny) - With all due respect to Dr. Frankel, I am a 37yr old professional who has been turned down many times for jobs well qualified for and promotions earned because I didn't either kiss the right butt, stab backs or play corporate cut-throat. And I'd hoped this book would help me figure out some way to either fix the problem or discover the root cause. And unfortunately, I walked away from this book feeling allot worse than before. So a warning before reading into it too far. Although Dr. Frankel coaches female professionals to become more successful in the workforce, this book has placing 101 `mistakes' strictly on our heads as a kind of `punishment' for being feminine. Meaning, she claims that we shouldn't act like men, but act less like young girls and more like women. All these mistakes being gleaned from childhood, everything you were taught was wrong and everything boys were taught was right. More than half these mistakes poignantly made several references toward (after working with thousands of women) finding more often than not, `men don't do this, but women do.' As the list went on, I got the distinct impression that there's absolutely no way I could possibly fit into this mould and considering her statement of the mistake of `quit aiming for perfection' then leaving the paradox of being perfect and imperfect at the same time. This b...

Insects That Feed on Trees and Shrubs

5 stars (Well worth it!) - This book is on my "short list" of essential references. Species are covered in clear, concise descriptions. This well organized volume makes hunting for similar species as easy as turning a page. The photos? I can't say enough about the clear, photos that make insect identification a good deal easier! While an excellent book for the landscape professional, scientist, or advanced gardener, beginners might be a bit overwhelmed by the technical language and scientific names. 5 stars (This is a much needed and fabulous manual.) - When trying to identify a particular problem with growing trees or shrubs knowing what kinds of insects are possible culprits is a major step. This book gives us, in color photos and descriptions, most of the common larvae that can be found feeding on the particular plants. Even Entomology texts often refuse to deal with larvae of insects, keeping only the adults in the keys and descriptions (even though the adults are often not pests!). This guide will be a welcome addition to any plant clinic, grower, or Entomology professor or student's bookshelf. ...

Weeds of the Northeast

5 stars (EXCELLENT REFERANCE BOOK) - EXCELLENT REFERENCE BOOK FOR WEED IDENTIFICATION. QUITE SPECIFIC FOR FARMERS AND GARDENERS. 4 stars (A handy guide--good identification photos) - I'm very pleased with this guide. After spending time with field research botanists, I've come to appreciate how difficult it can be to catalog invasive plants--they're EVERYWHERE! And of varying sizes, shapes, colors. Some so innocuous that it wouldn't even occur to you to notice and others so prolific in their families that it takes forever to track the different varieties. Luckily, Uva, Neal, and DiTomaso did and put together an excellent little book. As a professional gardener, this has been a handy reference. I would give it five stars, but I do have issue with some of the items. In the Introduction, weeds are discussed, but it is not clearly established what makes a "weed" a weed. For example, mallow is listed as a weed, but it appears to be a weed in the context of agricultural plantings. To my understanding, there are several native varieties of mallow in the U.S. Is this particular variety non-native? Is it a nuisance plant? Is it unsightly? My definition of weed has always been non-native escapists or volunteers. I'd like to see this clearly defined. I would also like more information on where the plant originates and what makes it a weed in the Northeast. As well as any beneficial qualities--are parts of the plant edible? Can any of it be used? Difficulties eradicating? Basically, as a gardener I'd like to know if there are any positive attributes. If I have a field full of amiranth is it the same type of amiranth sold in the stores? How does it vary? Could my client potentially harvest any of this before tilling or pulling out? The scientific information, such as plant identification: size of seeds, defining leaf shapes, etc., is all very clear and well done. As I said the photos are great. All in all this is indespensible, I just wish they would c...

Roxio Popcorn Mac

5 stars (Popcorn is the best!) - This software was obviosly checked and rechecked before it was released because I've used it over and over and have not run into a glitch of any kind yet. And the price is great. Hats off to the programmers of this fine product. 5 stars (Roxio Popcorn is worth every cent!) - Roxio Popcorn is amazing. I had an early version of Nero on my PC and it spit out as many bad burns as good ones. Since I've began using Popcorn product I've never had a bad burn or an error. It's as simple as one click, works great with my dual layer burner, and the disc verification feature is great if you have the time to let it run! 5 stars (Meet my expectation) - Popcorn has done everything I expected it to do. It's as simple as it gets and almost all my dvd's have worked. A couple haven't but that's not because of popcorn. I would recommned this over any other DVD compressor/burner. ...

XB Call of Cthulhu- Dark Corners of the Earth

4 stars (Something wicked this way comes. . .) - There's something brilliantly terrifying about an evil that is so powerful that mankind ultimately stands no chance of defeating it, and yet so sly and so subtle that it could walk up to you and shake your hand without you being any the wiser. Welcome to the Cthullu mythos. H.P. Lovecraft's seminal world of myth and madness has been criminally underused, especially in the video game industry. Aside from echoes of his style found in horror titles like Silent Hill or (even moreso) Eternal Darkness, most of the survival horror genre tends to toward the more plebian and campy nature of the Resident Evil games. However, Cthullu gurus now finally have a game straight from the source to sate their horror appetite with Call of Cthullu: Dark Corners of the Earth. And hey, it's actually pretty darn good too. Dark Corners of the Earth is primarily a first-person action/adventure game, mixing mind-bendingly fun puzzles, spine tingling suspense/horror, and skin-crawling action for a unique and (if it's your bad) very entertaining gaming experience. The story, an adaptation of Lovecraft's The Shadow Over Insmouth, is a very well-paced, well-presented, and overall engrossing tale of one man's struggle against terror and insanity. Speaking of which, insanity has visible effects in the game, much like Eternal Darkness's Sanity Meter. The more horrifying things you witness, the more slippery your grasp on reality becomes. Which will make you start physically looking over your shoulder when the creepy really starts to get to you, mostly because this game's middle name is "immersion." The first-person perspective puts you in the middle of everything, providing the kind of constant "in the world" feel that games like Half-Life 2 excel at. However, Dark Corners goes the extra mile, providing a "HUDless" screen, further pushing the player into the game's whispering and macabre world. Along with the game's stylized graphics (which do a ...

The Acorn People

5 stars (Thought Provoking) - In reviewing the reviews written for this book I was appaled at some of the reviews that I read. I seems that this world is trapped in a "Hollywood mentality" in which every book should read like a movie, fast and shallow. This book is much deeper. Although it is short, and obviously cuts out some of the trying times they must have gone through at camp, the author chooses to write it as an uplifting message. Anyone who is bored by this book is missing the deeper message. Children/people with handycaps are human also, and they have to suffer much more than any of us could possibly imagine. This is a story about special children allowed to be normal children, like they were meant to. 1 stars ( The Acorn People Book Report) - 1. The Acorn People takes place in Camp Wiggin, with all the usual camp settings like a pool, mountain, art room, etc. etc. The main character is Ron, a youthful camp counselor hoping to make an extra buck by volunteering. He manifests a selfish, arrogant personality at first, but later you see his more passionate, caring side when he really bonds with the kids. The first boy is a victim of polio, Benny, who is about 12 and African American. Suffering from muscle sclerosis, Thomas Stewart, a young teen, weighs only 35 pounds. The most loquacious client is Spider; he lost both his arms and legs in a gruesome car accident, but adapts and uses his mouth for everything. Not having a bladder takes its toll on social skills, especially in the case of Arid Aaron. His lack of bladder forces him to carry around a bag for his malodorous bodily fluids, hence the name. The most able bodied of the group is Martin, a blind boy. The point they are trying to get across in this book is that disabled persons can do anything non-handicap persons can do; we are all equal. A young camp counselor goes to a camp for disabled kids, thinking it will be a great summer even though he knew they were disabled. He is disgusted by the ...
