Talk Now- Learn Polish - Beginning Level

5 stars (Much better than expected) - Ok, I bought about 4 CDS for polish an dthis was the best o all.....this CD was great because unlike "teach yourself Polish"...ALL the talk was in Polish with pictures and English written translation...so you could play it 500 times with NO WASTE at all since you'll keep hearing POlish so much much better than ';teach yourself polish " cd. it was also much better than polish immersion which was an insult. I highly reccomend this CD 5 stars (Fun way to learn some basic Polish words) - This program will teach you to read, write, and correctly speak some very basic Polish words and sentences. It's a great way to get excited about learning Polish. It is however quite basic. You will only learn about 300 words. But you will learn them very, very well. And you will speak them very, very well. The program allows users to listen as two native polish speakers say the same words and phrases. You can repeat these as often as you like. And you can record your own speach and replay it until your pronounciation is correct. You will learn basic words, colors, food items, phrases, numbers, how to tell time, names of body parts, names of things you may shop for, and polish names of various countries. As a bonus you can print out a very nice polish picture dictionary. To help reinforce your learning, there are many games that give you the opportunity to be challenged. These too are rather simple...but they are indeed fun. And finally...you do not need to understand english to use this program as a polish instructional tool, you can choose from 72 different host languages. In my opinion, Talk Now will teach you quicker and better than Pimsluer. When you are ready get the intermediate version of Euro Talk Polish called World Talk Polish. And forget Pimsluer, which is overpriced and over-rated. Same goes for Rosetta Stone and a few others. When you are ready for intermediate/advanced learning, then consider courses such as Colloquial Polish..etc. ...

Talk Now- Learn Learn Croatian - Beginning Level

3 stars (fun and easy to learn...) - However, quite basic, so once you've finished the first CD, you'll need something else to get to more advanced practice. Even so, this CD worked perfectly for me and did not require me to download any additional software in order to get it to run. I'm using Mac OS X, 10.3.4-Panther on a G4 iBook. The fact that I'm running a Mac version may explain the differences in my review from the other reviewers the same software, who are likely windows based users. The games are quite fun and the graphics are crisp. We've not yet utilized the voice comparisson option, but look forward to doing so as soon as my microphone arrives--the program allows you to have your pronounciation/voicing compared to the native speaker's voices on the CD. For the price (I purchased on sale for under 15$), it's darned good. Not sure what the other reviewers paid, but considering most shareware costs about that much, this is a solid performer. We supplemented this starter program with Pimleseur Croatian. Imati velik dan! (have a great day!) Nina 1 stars (do not buy this item) - I have given this item 1 star because there is nothing lower. It might be a good product, I will never know. The first thing you will find is that in order to view the product you will need to download a software package costing an additional $15. The next thing you will find is that if you want a refund from Amazon, you will pay the shipping because this is not their fault (even though this is not mentioned in the description). The next thing you will find is that if you delete the program on your computer you will lose shared files. 3 stars (OK, but . . .) - Everything said in the editorial review is true. This method is a lot of fun and the interactive bit really helps. The most useful feature is getting to see a picture, record the word or phrase in Croatian, and then playback your recording next to a recording of a native speaker. Obviously, your computer must have a m...

Talk Now- Learn Czech - Beginning Level

4 stars (Easy and fun way to learn Czech) - I found the Talk Now! Czech CD-ROM very helpful in learning some basic Czech words and phrases. It is a difficult language to learn and this program offers easy games and options to keep it fun and motivating. While it doesn't get into grammar and more complex Czech, it's a great start for anyone wanting to feel more at home in the Czech Republic! ...

Rosetta Stone Russian Level 1 -amp- 2 Personal Edition

4 stars (A useful and fun programme) - After studying Russian, by myself, for about six months, I found that although my knowledge of the grammar and the vocabulary had progressed, my speaking and listening skills remained poor. I decided to buy Rosetta Stone Russian in order to learn how Russian words and sentences sounded. The programme was easy to install and easy to use. Best of all, I really enjoyed using it. The programme begins by showing four pictures and a word. The task is to pick the picture corresponding to the word. It is possible to choose whether the word is spoken or written, or both spoken and written. Gradually as you progress you meet simple phrases and eventually sentences and whole paragraphs. This method works really well as you are continually tested, while the whole learning experience feels more like a game than studying. While the listening and reading elements of the programme work well, I found it was less successful with regard to speaking and writing. The speaking part of the programme involves attempting to imitate a native speaker. The programme compares the sound you make with what the sound should be. I generally found it almost impossible to imitate the Russian speaker in such a way that the programme considered I had done so successfully. I therefore found this aspect of the programme more frustrating than useful. The writing part of the programme unfortunately requires using a very fiddly onscreen keyboard, which makes the whole process very slow and tedious. The key thing anyway with writing Russian is learning how to form the letters by hand and no computer programme can teach you to do this. I would suggest that someone beginning to use this programme should at least already know the Russian alphabet and ideally some of the grammar. Moreover to complete some of the exercises a dictionary is essential. There is no doubt that working through all the exercises is very useful. I found the programme especially good at helping ...

Talk Now- Learn Ukrainian - Beginning Level

3 stars (A Good Start) - There is not much out there in Ukrainian language learning software, so this is a good start. It covers basic some basic vocabulary, but only a few travel phrases. It was simple and easy to use. Not much depth, but is billed 'beginning level.' I did not care for the 'ditzy' personalities or the gambling motif, but that is all window dressing. Almost the same as Instant Immersion - Talk Now: Russian! --except for the language of course. ...

Rosetta Stone Russian Personal Edition Level 1

4 stars (Love this program) - I am finding this program great fun. It is beautifully put together and easy to use.The material is presented to accommodate different learning styles and more fun then class for the self motivated. After starting the first unit, I decided to visit Ukraine so I bought a phrase book. I found the phrase book very helpful in decoding all the oddities of the language that were perplexing. I highly recommend Rosetta Stone. 5 stars (The ONLY worthwhile language learning software!) - The Rosetta Stone series of language instruction software is "Pimsleur" level of effectiveness and unfortunately, Pimsleur level cost as well. The programs work on a total immersion basis, with no English used at all. There are several types of drills, ones where you hear a word or sentence and pick it out of a group of pictures, another where you read the text of the word and pick out the pictures, etc. There are also typing drills in your language to help you spell (without having to download special fonts), pronounciation drills that allow you to hear a word, speak it to your computer and hear your voice in comparison to the native speaker played back to you. This is the first program of it's type I've found where this feature actually works! I own both German and Russian 1 and 2. There is a LOT to learn here, especially if you do all the types of drills for each lesson. You learn grammar from inference, such as word endings when the subject is "in" something rather than "on" or "under" it. You see the same endings used, compare them with the pictures and you start to recognize patterns. But one of the best things about this software is the user interface. Since it's an immersion program, there's no English used and by it's very nature needs to be intuitive. This is how it should be done. I've used other types of language software that had a klunky, confusing interface with features that didn't work, etc. None of that is the case with the Rosetta Stone softw...

Talk Now- Learn Slovak - Beginning Level

2 stars (Fun practice for pronunciation... NOT a course...get a book.) - "Ano" (yes) - for under $20 you can learn to parrot some very basic Slovak - excellent for pronunciation practice!! (besides, the world's only Slovak CD?!?) I recommend this product so long as you know what to expect. BUT "Learn Slovak"? No way! There is no danger of learning too much from this CD - it covers simple vocab, about 30 phrases and comes with no supplemental written materials. Also, do not expect to learn anything about the language itself - i.e. no noun genders, syntax, declensions, etc... Technical irritation: it must always be run from the CD thus hogging resources & risks loss if scratched/damaged through use. (Buying idea: if you like languages in general you should definitely consider "33 Languages" on CD's from same publisher for about $40 total - it is EXACTLY the same software and includes the Slovak disk plus (guess) 32 more languages. A fun teaser for languages or gift for kids.) 4 stars (Nice for beginners, a teaser for those beyond beginner...) - This is a very nice primer for those wishing to learn some necessary words for travel to Slovakia. I used this for preparation for a visit to SK, and did fairly well. The locals were amazed at my phonetic understanding and pronunciation that I had learned from this CD. I believe this is one of only a few available Slovak language CDs on the market, so it's a good buy to those beginning in the language and those who need a refresher course in the basics. ...

Instant Immersion Russian 2 CD-ROM Set Jewel Case

3 stars (Not Mac OS X native) - Hi folks, the reviews below do a fine job reviewing the content of these CDs. I just wanted to alert Mac users that this software is not OS X native, but it works fine with the "classic" environment available to all OS X users. It's definitely worth 10 bucks. These CDs will be useful as a supplemental learning aid, or for a total novice planning a trip to Russia. 5 stars (Great intro to spoken Russian) - If you are comfortable using computers, and you want a fun way to learn very basic Russian words and phrases, this is an excellent program for the money. Areas covered include numbers, colors, food, countries, shopping, etc. Fun quizzes and matching games as well. I recommend any of the Instant Immersion language cd's. 3 stars (OK for speaking practice but missing continuity between CDs) - I've been studying Russian independently for a while now, and I found the first CD in this set very helpful with pronunciation, though it does little for one's ability to recognize and read the Cyrillic letters (They are only shown in the practice section.) and even less for the ability to spell or to write. It is a good tool (and very inexpensive) to use for SPEAKING, if that is, indeed, your only intention or if you have an alternative method of learning to write and spell and read. The vocabulary is useful, though it does little to teach you to compose sentences on your own. Now maybe I'm missing something, but I put the second CD in today, and I was VERY confused. There is no English translation that I can find, and there is a considerable amount of language used that is not covered in the first CD. I couldn't even find an Exit button to stop the program. On its own, I found this CD practically useless. Maybe there's something I didn't catch on to (and I tried using the Help button, but it was helpLESS.), and if anyone knows what it is, please post and let me know. I hope this helps! And if anyone can help me, I thank you. ...

Abbyy FineReader OCR Professional 7 0

5 stars (Great improvement over 6.0 ) - I use the try&buy version for a while and am very impressed with this product. OCR capability is excellent. A great improvement over 6.0 version. There are much fewer OCR errors than 6.0. 1 stars (ALERT -- BIG ERRORS in the posted reviews) - The posted reviews are *not* about "Fine Reader OCR", they are aboout the "Lingvo" dictionary...... 4 stars (10x cheaper directly from ABBYY) - This software costs only $40 if bought directly from the seller. ANy ideas what Micro 3 Corp is, and why is sells it for $300? Go to www.abbyyusa.com. Overall, good dictionary, found it very useful. Software could have been written better, so I'm upgrading from version 6.5 to 9.0, hopefully they improved the soft. But still the best dictionary on the market in my opinion ...
