New Directions in Chenille

3 stars (some nice ideas) - There are some nice ideas in this book but it isn't what I expected. I found the instructions to be a little bit long winded. It's a nice book to browse through however and doesn't give the reader an understanding on how to make chennille. I would still want to have this book in my library though I don't think I'd have to refer to it too often. 5 stars (New Directions in Chanille) - Outstanding insturctional guide to making chanille quilts and wearable art. 4 stars (Informative book) - I enjoyed reading this book and it gave me some new ideas. I especially liked the discussion about making quilts from chenille since I am the Quilting host at BellaOnline. I think that it is a bit cumbersome the way the patterns are included since they have to be enlarged. I was glad to see the pattern for the asymmetrical vest and the jacket. They are both very creative patterns perfectly suited for chenille. ...

Joyce Carol Oates-s -Where Are You Going- Where Have You Been--- A Study Guide from Gale-s -Short St

4 stars (Too Much Freedom and Not Enough) - Adolescent girls probably since the dawn of time have been trying to elude the domineering gaze of their mothers in a time during their development where young females are creating their own identity and discovering who they really are and how they want to portray themselves to others. It's a juncture at which they are even more prone to seek independence and the discoveries of independence--a period when the teenage girl is (or is at least trying to) mature into womanhood. sometimes too quickly. Renowned feminist author Joyce Carol Oates very expertly tackles this issue in her 1965 short story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" We're confronted with a young girl named Connie who just wants her own space, a girl who's tired of being told that she just doesn't measure up to her mother's high standard like her sister Jill; a girl who wants some romance--some love (or lust) in her life; an innocent naive girl who wants the freedom to meet and know boys but who is too young to understand that there are "good boys" and then there are "bad boys." Connie goes out at night with her friend and meets a guy. They seem to have a good time together, but it's just one of those things where you have a good time and you wake up the next morning having forgotten much of what happened the night before. Life just goes on. At least that's the case with Connie. But she soon learns that that's not quite the case with the boy she met, named Arnold Friend. When her parents leave for a barbecue, she's left home all alone. She couldn't be happier. Finally she has her space, she has nobody talking down to her or criticizing her, she finally feels that spirit of freeom she so craves, which involves the lack of parental supervision and control. But in a very scary way she soon comes to know that this parental security is actually an important safety net, one that every adolescent needs. She comes to realize that independence has a price, and...

Tim O-Brien-s -The Things They Carried-- A Study Guide from Gale-s -Short Stories for Students- Vol

3 stars (Danielle's summary review) - The things they carried is a great book by Tim O'Brien. Jimmy cross has a crush on a college girl named Martha, he knows she will never return his love because she majors in English and went to a movie on a single date to see Bonnie and Clyde and he put his hand on her knee and she looked at him and ordered him to pull his hand back. Now cross is in Vietnam and he really misses martha. The things that that they carried in thier packs depended on what kind of constitutions and personalities they had, like marijuana, bug repellant etc.. The stronger men got to carry the guns. Cross was the map keeper and basically had to protect his men. Lavender got shot, but cross didnt really care because he was focused to much on Martha and how much that he missed her. The things they carried is basically and introspective memory story and self-conscious examination of the methods and reasons behind storytelling. The narrator is unreliable; he speaks of the necessity of blurring truth and fiction in a true war story. The settings are during the late 1960's and late 1900's in Vietnam and Massachussets. The major conflict is the men of the Alpha Company, especially Tim O'Brien, grapple with the effects - both immediate and long term - of the vietnam war. Themes are physical and emotional burdens;fear of shame as motivation; the subjection of truth to storytelling. 5 stars (The Things They Carried) - This book gives outstanding insight into rhe Vietnam War and the people that served in it. The Things They Carried is a very enjoyable book; after you get through the first 10 or so pages you'll want to read the whole thing. I'm not normally into reading books, but I really liked this book and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a well told set of stories. Meaning, this book isn't just one story, but instead a set of stories told through the eyes of multiple characters. Regardless of whether you like that in a book or not, READ THIS BOOK! ...

Workouts in a Binder- Swim Workouts for Triathletes

4 stars (A good tool, but with one serious flaw..) - The workouts and the book overall are good, and for the self-coached athlete, much better than trying to think up a workout every day. There are two main sets for each workout, one longer than the other, but they could use more differentiation - one may be 2600 meters and the other 2300 meters. It should be more like 2600 and 1900. Or slip a third option in the middle. Of course, if you are reasonably experienced, it's not had to extrapolate whatever distance you plan to do for the day. But....the flaw...once you get it wet, it's nearly impossible to get it dry again! The pages are waterproof, but they stick together and even a little splash seems to get every page wet. Unless you stand it up and open as many pages as you can, rotating this every couple hours for several days, you just can't get it dry before it starts to mildew and stink. I evn tried putting it in the dryer (on that removable non-rotating shelf) but unless you get those pages open, it won't dry. Two solutions I've found- (1) take off the spiral binding, hole punch the pages (not easy, since the pages are plastic), but it into a binder, and just take a single page for the day's workout to the pool, or (2) keep the whole thing in a big ziploc bag, turning to the page you want first, then zipping it in for the pool. This work pretty well, and keeps you from owning "Stinky Workouts in a Binder". 3 stars (Try The Waterproof Coach) - This book appears to be similar to the Waterproof Coach: The Waterproof Workout Book for Fitness Swimmers and Triathletes published several years ago. The Waterproof Coach has more versatility because it's interior workout pages can be rearranged to create thousands of combinations of workouts. 5 stars (I can't wait to get in the pool again!) - Swim Workouts in a Binder for Triathletes is my new "Most Valuable Tool" for training this season. Bernhardt begins the book by making a concise case for sound, purposefu...

Pokemon XD- Gale of Darkness with Custom GameCube Skin

5 stars (Just one word F-U-N!!!) - I am not a Pokemon fan at all. I got this game because it came in a bundlepack with the gamecube. I played it. Yes I a 22 year old played PokemanXD Gale of Darkness and I enjoyed it. It is actually quite addicting and fun. The graphics are great load times really aren't anything at all unlike the PS2 ( really do hate that thing ). There are so many different Pokemon and some actually are fierce looking not some cutesy cartoony wimpy looking pokemon. I really can't see nothing wrong with this game. However voice overs would have been nice. Only one word to describe this game fun. 4 stars (great for anyone) - i am a girl and i hate pokemon! when i went to my cousins house we played his gamecube (which i also have) and he begged me to play his pokemon game! it is so fun! the graphics are beyond good and the pokemons are amazing! first you have to name the guy and no you cant be a girl! and after you get tasks like find your sister and get to unlock other places! the very first thing is a battle you do! and it dosnt matter if you lose(i lost) and than there is this guy you can battle and i won! its so fun even if your a girl but there is way too much talking so limits the time you have to play! i will get one for myself! you wont regret this game! 5 stars (helping kid...) - it's not coming out for the ps2 or gba. don't waste your money on a ps2...better to get a sweet nintendo ds (its crushing the useless overexpensive sony psp (Piece of Shizzzzzt Portable)) or save your money for a xbox 360. the ps2 isn't even that great anyway, it's a dud hardware-wise and it just doesn't have many great exclusive games. if you want to buy just one of the current gen consoles i'd get an xbox hands-down. it's got ninja gaiden, jade empire, knights of the old republic, and halo as well as other great exclusive games. the gamecube has pokemon, paper mario, and tons of other exclusives (like resident evil) that make even it better than the ps2 (and it's ...

Pokemon XD- Gale of Darkness

5 stars (So much better than Colluseum!) - Finally, we get a gamecube Pokemon game that's worthy of five stars! But that doesn't mean it's the game pokemon fans have been waiting for - just a simple gamecube version of the gameboy RPGs - but it is enjoyble for sure! In this game you start with a simple Eevee instead of Espeon and Umbreon - I think this was probably a better idea, the "eons" (Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, and Umbreon) are some of the best (and best looking - my opinion) pokemon in the game, and while you only have one now, at least you can get any Eevee evolution you want! There also seems to be more pokemon and a better variety of pokemon to snag in XD than in Colluseum. I am much more pleased with my team that I was in the latter game! This game seems to flow much more smoothly, and seems better done overall. Simply just more fun to play! True, it does have a few, long, boring parts - but not as many as the game before it. Many of the battle and attack animimations have been redone (example: in Colluseum Flareon didn't move when it attacked with Shadow Ball, here it does that same jump thing it did in Stadium 2) as well. But I do have one major complaint - the only place where you can battle using your gameboy pokemon is in 2player battle! (As opposed to Battle Mountain and the Colluseum mode in Colluseum). But since this game is better and I actually can "snag" (err, incase you don't know, Colluseum and XD have you well, stealing "Shadow Pokemon" from dark trainers, which you have to purify) most of my favorite pokemon I don't feel the urge of wanting it that much. There are a few "wild" pokemon in this game, but the selection is so few I don't really count it for anything. The music is largely simular to Colluseum, as are most of the graphics. The story is better though, taking place five years since we last saw Orre. Overall though, the cons in this game aren't as big as the ones in the Colluseum. And while not as good as the gameboy games...
