How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci- Seven Steps to Genius Every Day

2 stars (Kind of Pointless...) - The book was very well written and i must say that i really did enjoy the introduction chapters which was filled with bits of Leonardo's life, work, and other mentions of factual knowledge that was quite interesting. However, once the core of the book started to unfold it became very dry reading and the "self-help"'ish way the book is written becomes monotonous and i began to feel that Gelb himself is just too over enthused about Leonardo Da Vinci. I agree that he is a very noteworthy person to idolize and model your own life around to some extent but in some of the sections dealing with the senses and "what to do's" it seemed like he was stretching a bit and making Leonardo too godlike for his own right. Also, another qualm i had with the book was when he listed his own group of people he felt were noteworthy and i feel that it was tactless to do so because your ranking people from different genres, walks of lfe, skills and talents, and placing them as if it were the olympics in competition and it seemed to be another way to just give more praise to Leonardo in his fascination and obsession to put Da Vinci on some sort of pedestal. Again, i feel Leonardo was a brilliant man but to write a book solely on the content of how to think like him, i feel, is pointless and has no substance because he himself is not writing the book but only a mere fan who has never met the man, has no relevance to the time period Da Vinci lived in, and, again, ISNT DA VINCI writing a book about how to think like him. Many people reading this may say "well, what about biographies, those are people who may not have known the person they are writing about". Very true, but this is not a biography. Instead this is a list of thing you can do yourself to mock the way Da Vinci decided things, thought, and lived his life. 3 stars (Thorough and confusing) - I am not sure why I didn't like this book. It just seemed to have so many names about who did what that I couldn't keep all the information straight. It's like reading a novel with way too many characters. I haven't retained much of the information in the book, and am still a little confused about the difference between Sunnis and Shiites. He did make Sufism quite clear though. I think I will have to do more reading on the subject to make the facts stick. 3 stars (Almost a great book) - While this was often an engrossing read, I left reading it feeling slightly dissapointed. While I will echo other reviewers in stating that the author is a very gifted writer, his skills in history, political science, and anthropology are weaker. Weaknesses: His history loses it's chronological thread rather often. Given the convoluted history of the subject, this is perhaps understandable, but far too often he resorts to "as we shall see in the next chapter", which strikes me as the mistake of an immature historian - particularly as the thread often doesn't get taken up into well into the aforesaid chapter! His final thesis, that Islamic democracy is both necessary and inevitable, given the teachings of the Prophet, is weakly presented, especially as he notes how difficult it is to counter fundamentalisms of any religon. Finally, I think perhaps the scope of the book is over-broad. I found myself hoping that the author will re-write this book in 15-20 years, as the Oxford Dons of old would do with their signature works, in light of what I have no doubt will be his advancing skills and scholarship. The best of this book is very, very good indeed. It's especially strong at putting the Prophet and his ministry in a historical and social context. It is similarly strong on the process of exegesis that lead to Hadith and Sharia that run counter to his teachings. Evil Genius

2 stars (Management) - This is a brilliant game -- conceptually. The problem is squarely with the owner of the company. Somewhere he/she trusted a core developer. You've got great EVERYTHING, art/concepts, everything except programming. You WANT this game to succeed. But game drags and the problem is in the game core. It's irritating to the extreme trying to do anything. The agents move faster than the mouse and I have a 1.6 Ghz machine! They insist that you buy hardware to make up for their bad game core! We can only hope that the game is bought by another company, dumping the boss and his tech friend, and is rewritten in a form that actually works. Or, of course, if you have a 64 meg graphics card, and whatever else the game needs to make up for it's core failures, then you can enjoy it's genius. 1 stars ( Evil Genius is possibly the buggiest program since WindowsME) - I got Evil Genius from my local retailer, and it seemed like a unique concept, but to say that it has a few bugs is like saying Michael Jackson is only a a little bit white. It seems to install fine, but when you try to play the game, it restarts my PC. Ok, so I un-installed it, and tried again only to have same problem. I F-Disk and re-install windows and make sure all of my drivers are up-to-date... try again and still same problem. We were told to "wait for the patch", which we patiently did, but still the same issue. The people who were lucky enough to actually get into the game, found a slew of other bugs. My local retailer would not take the game back due to the "opened software policy" and the folks over at the Vivendi technical boards act as if they could care less, so I guess I am out $30. I never thought I'd say this about ANY software.... but this makes Windows ME look like a programming masterpiece.
