Getting to Yes- Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In

4 stars (A Classic that has been superceded.) - Getting to Yes started a revolution in negotiation, both by stressing principled negotiation and in making the material accessible to a very wide audience. It is still a good read, is still taught in universities and continuing education, and is an excellent starting point for people who are new to negotiation but intend a deep study because of its historical significance and its content. However, having taught Getting to Yes and having used principled bargaining in practice, I think there are a few shortcomings that are dealt with in other books. While Fischer and Ury do make the point that principled bargaining includes sticking to your priciples and not being a pushover, it is not emphasized enough. I have even found myself being too cooperative after reviewing this text because the emphasis is on being cooperative. I think this is a partcular danger for new/lay negotiators, especially if this is the first text they're exposed to or they intend to practice these concepts in daily life. The tone of the book is just a bit too friendly. As a result, there has been a backlash (wrongly, in my opinion) against this text in some quarters. The verbal judo section at the end is excellent, giving techniques for dealing with unreasonable people that are great. I would've liked more of these very practical tips and examples to go along with them, but the book as a whole is already a lot to digest. Newer versions of GTY do add more material here. Newer texts take these problems into account. The best, in my opinion, is the follow-on by Ury, "Getting Past No." It can be read without having read "Getting to Yes," although it is very interesting as a follow-on, too. 4 stars (Get Your Small Group Out of the Boat) - Ortberg's small group series are among the best, if used with his teaching DVD's (Zondervan, but you'll have to find that elsewhere, it appears). This particular study appeals to a broad range of backgrounds, and experience levels. We all wrestle with "staying comfortable" vs. "stepping out in faith" when the situation calls for it. Through excellent groups discussion and Scripture investigation questions it is easy to guide a group to go beyond their current "comfort zone" and take steps of faith "outside the boat." But purchasethe DVD for best results (use an Internet search engine and you should find it quickly). Ortberg is a master teacher, and his 25-30 minute teaching is a must. ...

4 stars (Learn to trust God...with some smiles (and few yawns) on the way) - John wrote this book to address what each and every believer face daily: fear. He invites us to get out of our comfort zone and take a bold step in trusting God in every move we do. To better draw his conclusions, he built this book on the scene in Matthew 14 where Jesus walks on water towards his disciples sitting in a boat : first fear struck them, then Peter had enough faith in Jesus to actually step out of the boat, but again fear struck him when the wind blew and he began to sink. The author couples humor with sincerity and the love of a true friend while analyzing the subject of Fear vs Trust, in every part of the boat scene. The book challenges you but at the same time instruct you on how to become a better christian, letting go of our fears and placing our mind and heart towards God. I loved that about Mr. Ortberg. The weak point about it, is that it tends to become a bit boring at times with a redundancy of ideas that get repeated in different parts of the book. You'll get excited at times, smile with John's humor and yet yawn a few pages along the way. All in all, important subject presented in a challenging, honest and loving approach. 5 stars (Powerful!) - I love this book! Replay, graphics, gameplay, everything is surpurb to anything Microsoft puts out there except FS2004 which is not a combat flight sim. .........and when you purchase this great bundle buy Combat over Europe and Pacific Fighters to go along with it. Endless gameplay and missions and if you still get bored you can download user-made missions for this game on NetWings.com! Never gets boring or old! Overall, it doesn't get any better than this when it comes to WWII combat flight sim's! Take my word for it! 5 stars (Truly Awesome) - Forgotten Battles (FB) is truly awesome with its amazingly realistic graphics. The detail to aircraft (including cockpit interior)will delight the WWII buff and the sunlight effects are stunning and realistic. You can zoom in and out, and have internal and external views. You will however, need to ensure your computer and graphics card can handle the requirements of the game. The flight model can be adjusted to suit ones own individual skill or pleasure levels. Pilot career campaigns can be created from a whole range aircraft including Stuka, Heinkel 111, ME109, IL2, I16, MIGs etc, although these aircraft could be upgraded during the pilots career. Once you start to amass a tally, the game has you going back for more to increase your tally. Many variety of aircraft can be encountered, including Gladiators, P40 Kittyhawks, P39 Airacobras, JU88s etc. In the midst of combat on bomber aircraft you can take up the postion of gunners and attempt to shoot down marauding fighters. My only gripe is that there is no strategic element to the game and there is no way you can influence the outcome of the war, but then again the air war on the Eastern Front was almost entirely a tactical affair. I can say that the information in this book is valid and direct. There is little fluff. As well, anyone leaving a poor review has obviously either not read the book or is intentionaly trying to sabotage its sales for their own benefit. An absolute must for any new car salesman. 2 stars (Unimpressive) - I ordered this book after reading several good reviews about it. After reading it, though, I was unimpressed to say the least. I guess I'm not gullible enough to believe the BS and hokey stories that seem to have been exaggerated, embellished, or made up all together.
