5 stars (funny and intelligent- it hurts!!) - This is one of the funnier books I have read in a long time. My family kept coming in the room to see what I was laughing at. Someone gave me this book when I was really ill and the laughter was sorely needed. It served it's purpose. Even to the religious, I imagine it would be hard not to laugh. If you can't laugh at yourself... especially when someone is so intelligently poking fun at you? Then it's just a shame- because this book is too funny to be missed... it has been circulated through my family and friends and everyone has had a good laugh! 5 stars (Biff is THE MAN) - I laughed out loud until it hurt - and it felt great. I would never have left xtianity if the followers I encountered were full of the good humor Biff displays. Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time- The Historical Jesus - the Heart of Contemporary Faith

4 stars (The future of christianity) - Fundementalists beware, your world may be shaken when you read this intelligent book. Borg is a great scholar and theologian. he has a nice touch and presents jesus in a believable and humble light without taking away the divine aspect. This is an antidote against religious fundementalists who wnat to own Jesus and create an exclusive cult they call christianity. 4 stars (Informative book about the historical Jesus) - I actually decided to read Borg's books after reading some of John Crossan's books where Borg was referenced. I thought the set-up of this book was extremely helpful in illustrating what Borg was discussing. However, I think I had hoped this would be more of a "heart-felt" novel. I understand Borg had to get in all the historical information about Jesus (and he did an incredible job at that) but I had hoped he would speak of Jesus on more of an emotional level. I felt as I was more of an outsider looking in on the life of Jesus rather than a comrade right next to him. And perhaps that is the effect Borg wanted. All in all, a great book with great information. What I found most interesting in this whole book was the link between Jesus and Sophia (wisdom). Borg makes an excellent point to contrast the "Son of God" image of Jesus by saying Jesus was personified as Wisdom- a feminine term in Greek. He does this to stress the many metaphors used when defining Jesus and says we must not take them literally. All in all a great read with great information. 5 stars (Dr. Borg is a gifted writer and loving Spirit filled person) - Before reading Marcus Borg's masterpiece "Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time" I was a self proclaimed agnostic. 5 stars (Heart-healing for the Agnostic) - I found this book full of surprises, relevant to the secular-religious debate and an entertaining, thoughtful read. Yancey opened and enriched my perspective on Jesus. 5 stars (Thought provoking...) - It is an amazing book that forces me to look at Jesus from a totally different perspective. Basically, it appars that God accepted Job's implied challenge to see the world through "Human" eyes, and history is made and the world is changed forever. Excellent reading... 3 stars (I wanted more.) - I wanted more. Miracles, Yancey quotes C.S Lewis stating that miracles work by natural laws. When Jews changed the water too wine suggested natural laws were used to create the miracle. This is not rationale to me. The logic goes as follows, the water was consumed by the grape, the grapes grows from nutrients and sunlight, the grape is harvested, the grape juices ferment, the end result is wine. The wine is a product of natural, mechanical, and manufacturing processes, a feat reproduceable by any mortal. What about the parting of the red Sea? One could state, this phenomena was the result of high speed winds that separated the water, dried out the land, and allowed the children of Israel to cross over, and as the Egyptians attempted the crossing, the wind stopped blowing, and the water buryed the Egyptians. So, Natural laws combine with time manipulation explaining the miracle. The implication being that if man could manipulate time and mechanical processes, any miracle could be performed by applying natural laws. Furthermore, one could might conclude miracles are a lack of scientific knowledge and if one possessed such knowledge there would be no miracle just rational application of information. For example, if a bioengineering gene therapy was used to kill cancer cells then the miracle is the application of the medicene, not a divine intervention. 5 stars (A fresh look at Jesus the man) - I really enjoyed reading this book and discovering many aspects about Jesus the man and the sociological context in which he lived. I particularly appreciated that this book has no theological agenda. It presents conflicting views of Jesus'life, yet no sides are taken. 1 stars (A modern gnostic view of Jesus' life) - If you are not a Christian, this book would be a poor introduction to Christianity and will probably have little appeal to you since it does not present Jesus as a religious figure. If you are a Christian, the mere assumption that there are "literary creations" within the Gospels will draw you away from this book. Of course, if you're an atheist, this book will hold no appeal for you. So this book begs the question: who is it written for? The writer tries his best to pretend to be impartial in his view of Jesus, but to say he comes up short would be a stretch. Rule number one of an impartial approach to any study is not to bring your own assumptions into your subject. But that is not what the author does. In fact, from page one he assumes that the Gospels are full of mere "literary creations", and that dooms the book from the start. Bottom line about any study performed on the figure, historical or otherwise, of Jesus is to approach the subject willing to consider that whoever wrote the Gospels was either a)inspired by the Holy Spirit as it is widely believed by Christians or b)that the authors had no need to embelish the life of Jesus since His teachings and works were pretty amazing of themselves. If you're not willing to consider any of these two possibilities, you will end up with the biased study contained in this book. This book takes the gnostic approach to Jesus: that he was simply a man. A great man, whose teachings were intended to start a theological revolution much like Muhammad (Mohammed) or Confucius, but just a man. Experiencing the Heart of Jesus - Knowing His Heart- Feeling His Love

5 stars (Best Bible Study So Far) - I've been in the same women's bible study for 5 years now. This is the best study we have ever done. It helped me understand Jesus in a way I never have. I like the "workbook" approach of making you match verses with interpretations. I have learned where the books are in my bible just by looking up so many verses. I feel closer to God than I ever have before, and much of that was the guidance of this book during a difficult time. 1 stars (Experiencing whose heart? ) - Ought to have been titled "Experiencing the ramblings of Max Lucado" or "Experiencing the Dogma of Christianity". The anecdotal stories that lead up to more anecdotal examples were trite. The 1001 blurbs written in the margins from previous books that he has written were trite. His writing style is, I'm guessing, supposed to be fresh, street, or "where you are"; but, it's painful and aggrivating to read. Ah, but you "identify" with his style; I'm not one of them. I find the tone dry, self-indulgent, and the content not living up to the thesis captured in the title or his churchy infomercial that we endured. If you want a book on personal development, read "The Search For Significance" by Robert McGee; if you want a book about the historical Jesus (I mean the real Rabbi from the North), read the forward to the Jewish New Testament by Stern for a start (follow up with James Scott Trimm or Anthony Buzzard, or Bart Ehrmann, or http://religion.rutgers.edu/iho/). So what would've helped? Tell me ABOUT Jesus! Tell me who he is! Why he was here! What his 'deal' was! Why people should listen to him! Differing opinions of him! If You Want to Walk on Water- You-ve Got to Get Out of the Boat

4 stars (Learn to trust God...with some smiles (and few yawns) on the way) - John wrote this book to address what each and every believer face daily: fear. He invites us to get out of our comfort zone and take a bold step in trusting God in every move we do. To better draw his conclusions, he built this book on the scene in Matthew 14 where Jesus walks on water towards his disciples sitting in a boat : first fear struck them, then Peter had enough faith in Jesus to actually step out of the boat, but again fear struck him when the wind blew and he began to sink. The author couples humor with sincerity and the love of a true friend while analyzing the subject of Fear vs Trust, in every part of the boat scene. The book challenges you but at the same time instruct you on how to become a better christian, letting go of our fears and placing our mind and heart towards God. I loved that about Mr. Ortberg. The weak point about it, is that it tends to become a bit boring at times with a redundancy of ideas that get repeated in different parts of the book. You'll get excited at times, smile with John's humor and yet yawn a few pages along the way. All in all, important subject presented in a challenging, honest and loving approach. 5 stars (Powerful!) - I love this book! Thanks! 4 stars (Intriguing look at faith, worthwhile bits for believers) - This book is great for making a current believer feel like they have made the correct choice in their faith, because it backs it up with all sorts of evidence. It's kind of like reading Lee Strobel's Case for Faith and Case for Christ in extreme abbreviated format. I am a believer, and this book is perfect for coming up with arguments for people who take a stand in opposition to mine, but I don't know if it would make THEM believe any differently. There were a couple of points in the book that I was unfamiliar with and was glad to read: that if God is in me, he will love my spouse even when I am unable to, that the Trinity is truly beyond my understanding so it's ok if I don't get it. There is definite value in this book for believers, but I'm afraid for non-believers this would fall of deaf ears. Maybe not, the Lord has the power to do amazing things. ...

The Case for Christ- A Journalist-s Personal Investigation of the Evidence for Jesus

5 stars (Can't Deny Jesus ) - If anyone doubts that Jesus was God in the flesh, this book will prove it to be true. This is a book for the "Prove It To Me" types, Lee does that. If one is agnostic or atheist, this book is a good read, open minded and fair. 5 stars (actually pretty good) - In my search for my faith, I was recommended Strobel's Case for Christ. It has turned out to be a good choice. Sure Strobel doesn't present everything or even both sides (interviewing a rebuttal expert would have been a welcomed addition). And some of the arguements were weak, like the section on archeology (though I feel that was more the fault of his expert than the evidence out there), the chapter "Was Jesus Convinced That He Was teh Son of God?, the psychological evidence, the chapter on the evidence of his appearances after death, and the final chapter, the circumstantial evidence. But even after that is said, Strobel's book makes a strong case for the life of Christ as the Son of God. The book makes no apologies for being a book supporting Christianity, but then that is what it is. It's sure to be a true joy for those with faith and I think is valuable for those searching, though only as a starting place and not where you want to stop. 5 stars (Certainly a legitimate argument) - Lee Strobel's The Case for Christ is a must read for anyone struggling with Jesus questions. Strobel sets off on a two-year journey, with a plethora of questions about Christianity, in hopes of getting some answers one the most disputed figures in history. With FICTIONAL books, like Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, causing people to question the truth of Christianity, Lee's journey to faith is the answer. Personally, I do not understand the negative reviews of the book, which suggest Strobel's book as an apologetic.
