The Genius of Flexibility - The Smart Way to Stretch and Strengthen Your Body

4 stars (Warning!!! Only read if you want better health, longer limbs etc) - This is a good read. I didn't give it it's fifth star because not all information is new, however it's written in an easy to follow way and if you begin it right away, the results will happen right away. The effects were amazing and you'll notice a difference fast. This is the perfect addition to any exercise collection whether it be in books or dvds. Buy this and begin immediately. You won't be sorry. 5 stars (Self Health for Procrastinators) - Wow no more excuses! This book is so well laid out that even the most resistant amongst us can master this. The results are the hook. The immediate difference is felt and there is a seduction to the exercises that made me keep turning the page.Great mood, great muscles, here I come. Good Morning America show gave too little time to Bob Cooley and stretchers because the book deserves more attention -the best selfhelp tools I've ever read or experienced. Many thanks to Bob's genuis I can own mine. 1 stars (The generosity of Genius) - Through incredibly diligent perseverance over many years. Bob Cooley is able to share the many crucial secrets to human vitality that are described in this book. Don't miss them! They certainly have improved my life. Hyperbole fuels Bob's enthusiasm. If you are a doubter just keep breathing and try the excercises a few times and perhaps you, too, will be laughing and enjoying some outrageous trust in how extraordinary life can be. ...

The Abs Diet- The Six-Week Plan to Flatten Your Stomach and Keep You Lean for Life

4 stars (Worth reading, food plan needs work) - I am a 38 year old woman who is looking to lose about 20 lbs and tone up a bit. My middle area has expanded a bit in the past year and it is my mission to trim it back before I hit 40. The thing that attracted me to the health lifestyle outlined in Mr. Zinczenko's book was the stress on increasing one's metabolism. The food plan also was appealing as it incorporated many of the foods I already eat. I just needed to get some "organization" in how to eat them in order to achieve the results I was looking for. This is not a typical "high protein" diet. He stresses the importance (it's imperative, really) of eating whole grains instead of white flour and trans-fats. Fiber is essential to the mechanics of the body as it was designed. Caloric intake is not an issue in this book but I really disagree with that. Maybe he is saying that at first, one shouldn't count calories, instead, eat 3 smaller meals a day and at least two snacks, timed so that one never gets "hungry". Maybe this works when your metabolism is already jump-started, but for me, I can't eat snacks when I'm not hungry. I am the type of person who really doesn't like eating that much anyway so I guess I tend to eat more at a meal so that I "get it over with". This is proving to be the biggest struggle for me with this diet. I don't want to have to think too hard about "when it's time to eat" or "Oh gosh, I forgot my afternoon snack, there goes my metabolism". The book HAS taught me a lot though about foods I didn't know and the effect on the human body. The whole "eat fat, get fat" thing has always been confusing so it's nice to see the breakdown of "good fat, vs. bad fat". Also, I learned a lot about the nasty High Fructose Corn Syrup additive that is in EVERYTHING! After learning about it I went through my cupboards and refrigerator and was amazed at the amount of products that contains HFCS. I tossed everything that contains it. Even ...

Scrawny to Brawny - The Complete Guide to Building Muscle the Natural Way

3 stars (Just Another Rip Off) - I found this book to be just another hype to get your bucks, it does not contain anything out of the ordinary regarding muscle building, I found it very disappointing. I'm glad I purchased it on Amazon.com with a discount. 4 stars (Some new information for the long limbed) - I've been trying to gain weight for 15+ years but with little real success. I've read alot and I'm constantly in the gym. Most of the information in the book is not new; eat alot and lift heavy during short intense workouts. What I did find new was the biometrics and assessments portion of the book. It gave new insight into proper body mechanics for the ectomorph. There was a few pearls of wisdom in the nutrition section. I've put on 10lbs after 6 weeks even without following the nutrition plan exactly. I would definitely reccommend the book to a novice to intermediate level hardgainer, it will save them from wasting alot of time listening to mesomorph advice on how to train. 2 stars (Ectomorphs Only) - With all the complimentary reviews you'd think that this book was a godsend. Certainly there are good things about the book: its discussion of biomechanics and kinesiology, good demo photos, nutrition discussion, and friendly writing style. Here's the caveat: although the description of the book is for "hardgainer's (although they eschew the term, they prefer the term "hypertrophy challenged" in their first chapter), AND they say that there is a difference between a hardgainer and an ectomorph, the rest of the book addresses the ectomorph. BUT what if you are a short skinny guy? You may feel a bit left out when every other paragraph laments the ectomorphic challenges of long bones, height, longer radius, kinesiology of those INCREDIBLY long legs that never tire and how easy it is to lift for short guys. What if you are just a shrimp? ...

Essentials of Weightlifting and Strength Training

5 stars (Worth the money, dense with information) - I am a former collegiate oarsman, who lifted weights to augment strength in college. I also coached rowing for a short time, and track and field. I wanted to review the book after finding Mr. El-Hewie has 57 book reviews on Amazon.com, many less than flattering. But he writes them honestly. So I wanted to see how good his book is. Its a bit difficult, but very good. Packed with information. I've looked at many other books at the library, but bought few. At the moment, I have Getting Stronger, and now this book. To begin, the book is 9 x 12 and an inch thick. Mr. El-Hewie uses margins of about 3/4 of an inch. His 519 pages could easily have been spread out to a "more readable" 1000 pages. He is very much for powerlifting and traditional weight lifting, but still gives very good coverage to bodybuilding. His technical writing is thorough. He gives anatomical and descriptions of how things work that you expect of other books, but seldom find. He covers Technique, Posture (over and over, since you can hurt yourself, as some us well know), Fallacies, Weightliftng, Powerlifting, Importance of Muscle Balance, Bodybuilding, Weight Training, individual chapters to the Snatch, and Clean & Jerk. Also Endurance vs Strength, Axial Training (multi-joint exercises, his preference),Training Choices, Managing Load Volume and Intensity, Health and Fitness, Exercise & Preventable Disease, Diet and Nutrition, Exercise and Injuries, Exercise and Science, a good FAQs, and Training for Women. He has tables. He show both good technique and bad technique, and the what and why of them. He summarizes each chapter. The book is not perfect. But this is a book in English by an Egyptian. There are occasional grammatical errors, and rare difficult sentences. But hey, how many of us would try to make a 500 page book in a foreign language ? Mr. El-Hewie claims to be a doctor and engineer. From what I read in the book, he must be. ...

Men-s Health Home Workout Bible- A Do-It-Yourself Guide to Burning Fat and Building Muscle

5 stars (Excellent Overall) - Provides basic understanding of exercise physiology and diet. Provides basic understanding of muscles and their functions. Provides the nuts and bolts of dos and donts with respect to form, routines ( when to and how to change routines ). One of the only few books out there which would tell you what exercise equipment to use and what to expect from that equipment. Also one of the only books which has divided ALL exercises ( dumbell, free weights and cable ) into beginner , intermmediate and advance level. If you are new to weight training this is a must have and probably the first one to have. My only complain is that the author has strongly discouraged the use of SMITH MACHINE. I understand the rational but if you are like me i.e. exercising at home without the spotter and do not want to get injured then you got to have this machine. After doing weight training for one and a half year my last comment about the ultimate machine "the dream machine" is Get a SMITH MACHINE with Free weight capability and integrated cable system. Get a cheao 40 lbs each two adjustable dumbells from Walmart and you are set to be at the next level. Good Luck! 3 stars (Pretty good for men thinking about adding muscle and willing to pay the price) - This is a traditional, intro pumping iron book for men. The only slight twist is, as the title says, it's for men looking to workout at home, not the club. My wife and I have both read it and this is our combined feedback ("See all my reviews" for additional feedback). Our 3 star rating is actually an average. I give it 3.5 and she gives it 2.5. To be blunt, in our oppinion the book is targetted at men with little or no weightlifting experience and are interested in doing a "body make-over" to become the chick-magnet they always knew they could be. To us, it's not a health and fitness book but an intro pumping iron book. If you are self-motivated, respond well to setting a goal and working hard to achieve...

Men-s Health The Book of Muscle

5 stars (A surprisingly good book) - I wasn't really looking for much out here, but was pleasantly surprised with the quality and content of the book. I have been doing weight lifting for many years, and have bought all sorts of books, and this is the only book that sounds complete and reliable. The book also has 18 months of chalked out routine which are quite easy to follow. I have been through all sorts of training programmes, and the authours of each book claim that they have "something real" that the other writers don't. They openly bash each other. OK, now here's the truth. Any programme will work for beginners, whether its superslow or Brawn. The truth is that you got to go to the gym and lift. So, if any programme works, why not use the one thats presented in this book? Its carefully planned out, time-tested and lasts for 18 months (others just last for 12 weeks or so and then they leave you hanging in air). My advice, get this book and start working out. You won't loose. All the nest! 5 stars (Great training book) - I got a supplement of this book with a copy of mens healt a few years ago. It was my bible for training until one day my car was stolen with the supplement in it. I was lost without it until I bought the full book from amazon recently. It is a great training aid for those who are serious about training but need a little, or should I say lack a little in the form of direction. This book is great for giving yourself the programme(s) to follow and a great step by step description of how to do the various exercises. I dont leave this one in my car to be stolen again as I dont want to loose it a second time.... Gerard 5 stars (BEST OF THE BEST) - An excellent, interesting, well written and professionally illustrated guide to building your body.Physiology, cardio, nutrition, warmup, stretching(flexibility),and weight training are shown to work synergistically to gain strength and build muscle. This book is full of helpful hints and interesting facts. For e...

Big Beyond Belief

5 stars (An awesome book) - The best damn easiest book to follow that gets you all the results you need. I was coming out of high school football, and wasn't talented enough to play in the division 1 college i went to, but i did wanna keep lifting. I did the medium frequency weightlifting program which was once a day, 6 days a week. It was absolutely awesome, and honestly, i only stayed on it for a six week phase of the recommended 18 weeks. You MUST, as is stressed in the book, follow the recommendations of the book as closely as possible but you will most definitely get results. In six weeks i went from weighing 220 to weighing 242 with a bodyfat % that went from 22 to 19, which basically means i gained OVER 20 POUNDS OF MUSCLE in six weeks!!! It doesn't take a genius to know that's awesome. Bench press went up from 295 1 rep max to 365, Squat went from 365 4 rep max to 505, and i was curling a 45 and a 25 on each side in standing easy curl bar like if it was nothing. Needless to say i was incredibly impressed. This book is definitely not for unseasoned weightlifters, or atleast not for ones who don't have someone to stress the importance of sticking to the guidelines. Also, my power clean went up from 245 one rep max to 275 and i didn't do a single power clean during the six week phase. The most surprising thing is that each workout took less than an hour to complete with a partner and in some occassions it was under 45 minutes. It may not make sense now, but read the book. Take it with you to the john, and you'll get ass numbness from reading on for too long. It really grabs you. Lots of the stuff is stuff that most people know, but nonetheless it's good to read it all together in a coherent way that translates into MORE MUSCLE, more muscle, and more muscle. The book is called big beyond belief, but it's also awesome for Strength gains. I've never done any drugs...just protein powders and i had awesome results. 1 stars (Big Beyond Bull) - I star...

Legal Muscle- Anabolics in America

3 stars (Routina - Another Pro-Drug book from a defense law firm) - Don't buy this book thinking it will change your mind. It's kind of an advocates brief from a defense law firm. No prosecutors brief however. Basically this book is similar to many pro-drug books on the market, parading a serious of horribles where prosecutors equated steroids with crack and some innocent bodybuilder got sent to the slammer. Of course, the same thing sometimes happens with legitimate businessmen who send money overseas without reporting it to the Treasury Dept and get slammed for 'money laundering' Unfair for sure. (BTW, I have nothing against legalizing drugs, even hard drugs, if users want them, and assuming minors and nuts can't use them). I have not read this book, but they all tend to be cut from the same cloth. One book I did read and highly recommend is: A Brief History of Cocaine by Steven B. Karch, M.D. Truly outstanding. Recommend this review if it helped you. Be honest. 5 stars (You must own this book) - If you are interested in steroids at all, especially if you use steroids you should buy this book. It is money well spent. 5 stars (What you need to know about hipocrisy in America) - If you are, or are thinking of, using anabolics (including prohormones soon), you need to read this book. The more you read, the more angry you become at the persecution of responsible adults, whose only vice seems to be a desire to improve their physique. This book gives you a list of steroid related laws for all 50 states as well as a lot of "horror stories" about average citizens caught up in the "anti-steroid mania" of some rural law enforcement agencies. IE, the guy who has smaller than a personal amount of some oral steroid who is suddenly seen as a BIG DEALER by Bubba Podunk deputy sheriff. Then spends countless dollars and loses almost everything trying to convince some small town judge that he is not the same as some Columbian Cartel Drug Lord (yes, some are really that ...

The Russian Kettlebell Challenge

5 stars (Essential strength training material.) - After reading Pavel Tsatsouline's "The Naked Warrior," I took the plunge and purchased this book along with a basic 36-pound kettlebell. The exercises are more technically demanding than what you see being performed in fitness clubs, but the superior results of kettlebell training are impossible to deny: lean wiry muscles, increased endurance, and immense reserves of functional strength. Unlike the Nautilus scene, kettlebells are just plain fun to work out with, and like I said, they leave no doubt even after your first encounter with them that they are *the* ticket for the would-be ironman (or woman.) If you have a fitness club membership, burn it and use the proceeds to purchase this book and a kettlebell or two. It's a better deal. 5 stars (Fantastic Workout) - If you are tired of dieting and aerobics, want to take part in an intense workout, or if you just want to read more about this crazy workout and learn some basics this book is for you. This book provides a great introduction to Kettlebell Training. This book is broken into the following four very useful sections. Section One explains the History of the Russian Kettlebell. Section Two goes into Special Applications such as Combat Sports, Arm Wrestling, Weight Loss, etc. Section Three goes into actual Kettlebell Techniques. Section Four finishes the book off with some Classic Kettlebell Programs One of the most impressive parts of this book and the reason I believe it earns its 5 stars is because of not only its complete history but also its fantastic breakdown of the foundational exercises through photographs. This is a great starting point if you are interested in Kettlebells. However, if you plan on continuing with kettlebell training I would recommend that you get a quality 16kg kettlebell & purchase Pavel's DVD also named " The Russian Kettlebell Challenge " 5 stars (Join the kettlebell revolution!) - You have to try kettlebells to beli...

Power to the People- - Russian Strength Training Secrets for Every American

5 stars (I'm amazed) - This stuff works! The guy says he will have us growing like weeds in no time, and he is RIGHT. I've made amazing gains in strength (and some in mass) by using principles found in this book. I'm a guy who has lifted weights for 15 years and had stagnated a long time ago. I thought I was a "hardgainer", and hardly had any results from my training after my first 2-3 years. This book finally changed that. A word of caution. The author recommends training very frequently, even several times at day (but never to failure). If you, like me, have been training every bodypart only once a week and you switch to Pavel-type training, I suggest you add volume GRADUALLY. Full of excitement I started benching 5 times a day immediately -- and I became severly overtrained and had to take a week off to recover. Ouch. (Now, Pavel doesn't recommend using the bench press. In fact, he only provides you with 2 (actually 3) excercises, but the principles he describes will work with ANY excercise. I have made HUGE gains in the bench and pull-ups using what I learned from this book.) A second word of caution. I found the book to be quite disorganized. It could definately use the work of a good editor. Yes, half the book is advertising, and the pages with usefull stuff contain so much repetition they could probably be reduced in half as well. I could have deducted a couple of stars because of these problems, but this book has GREAT information about how to get awesomly strong. And when it comes down to it that's all that matters. This is the book I wish I had read 15 years ago. Do yourself a favour and buy it. 3 stars (Lots of Hype. Good Program, though) - Pavel has some good stuff in this book. The book revolves around a simple, high tension, low volume, high frequency program involving two exercises and their variations. It's good, but it can be pretty much descibed in one page and detailed in five. What we get is a book chock full of marketing hype with a be...

The New High Intensity Training - The Best Muscle-Building System You-ve Never Tried

3 stars (Unbelievable and bizarre) - There is some good body building information in this book. Unfortunately the good is buried within bizarre tales about the psychological quirks of some of the characters, and by some blatantly false stories of what HIT supposedly did. An example of a false story is someone supposedly losing 52 pounds of fat in 66 days. This was with a 1500 calorie diet and three short weight-lifting sessions per week as the only exercise! Mathematically a pound is 3500 calories, so it would take at least 30 miles of day of running to even theoretically lose weight that fast. The reality is that no one could physically or psychologically tolerate a 2750 calorie per day deficit for long. The author clearly worships Arthur Jones, and he approvingly tells tales of how Jones would threaten to beat up anyone who dared speak in his presence (including Arnold Schwarzenegger) or disagree with him, because Jones felt he was due that "respect". Jones is also quoted telling stories about animals in Africa, which supposedly prove the body building system in the book is true. Another bizarre anecdote is a rumor that body builder Mike Mentzer sometimes believe that Jones was God, and that Mentzer was the Son of God. Those Jones and Darden disagree with are trashed by the anecdotes in the book, while we hear only impossibly good things about those they like. The diet material, as mentioned above, is unbelievable. The weight lifting information is good, and covers half the book, which is why I have given the stars. There are detailed workout plans, along with pictures and comments explaining each exercise. There is also a discussion of the principles of high intensity training. 5 stars (What HIT is all about) - I'll be consise: You don't need to spend all that endless hours in the gym, as Schwarzrnegger and Weider are claiming. Researches (regardless to this book) show insignificant difference in muscle strength and hypertrophy, when comparing 1 set to a ...
