4 stars (Use catalytic mechanisms to build a company's wildest dreams) - Jim Collins operates a management research laboratory in Boulder, Colorado. Together with Jerry I. Porras he wrote the bestseller 'Built to Last' (1994), which he later followed-up with super-bestseller 'Good to Great' (2001). This article was published in the July-August 1999 issue of the Harvard Business Review. Most executives have a big, hairy, audacious goal (BHAG). So what is a BHAG? It has a long time frame (10-30 years or more); it is clear, compelling, and easy to grasp; and it connexts to the core values and purpose of the organization. In order to reach their BHAGs, executives write vision statements, deliver speeches, launch change initiatives, formalize rules and checklists, etc. But most executives never realize their ambitious dreams. However, the author believes that catalytic mechanisms can help organizations turn goals into results. "Catalytic mechanisms are the crucial link between objectives and performance; galvanizing, non-bureaucratic means to turn one into the other." Catalytic mechanisms share five distinct characteristics: 1. It produces the desired results in unpredictable ways; 2. it distributes power for the benefit of the overall system; 3. it has teeth; 4. it ejects viruses; and 5. it produces an ongoing effect. This sounds simple, but it is not. Collins provides us with some principles that can support the process of building catalytic mechanisms. But be aware, developing a set of catalytic mechanisms is an ongoing process, an ongoing discipline, and a habit of mind and action. "BHAG are a company wildest dreams. This book gives you full details on using your photos (or other images) to decorate vases, frames, candles and all kinds of things in your home. I've made some nice gifts which can be really easy with the techniques shown in the book. Great ideas, great instruction! I like that she included clip art in the back of the book as well - I love projects like these but I'm not always the most imaginative person in the world. 5 stars (Impact of six leadership styles on organizational climate) - Daniel Goleman is co-chairman of the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations, based at Rutgers University. He is the author of the bestsellers 'Emotional Intelligence' (1995) and 'Working with Emotional Intelligence' (1998). This article was published in the March-April 2000 issue of Harvard Business Review. This article is based on research by the author with consulting firm Hay/McBer (previously the late David McClelland) into the leadership styles of 3,871 executives. This research found six different distinct leadership styles: (1) coercive; (2) authoritative; (3) affiliative; (4) democratic; (5) pacesetting; and (6) coaching. The author discusses each style in detail, including the direct and unique impact the different styles have on organization climate, including financial performance. According to previous research by David McClelland "climate" refers to six key factors that influence an organization's working environment: (1) flexibility; (2) responsibility; (3) standards; (4) rewards: (5) clarity; and (6) commitment. The article introduces a table with the effect of each of the six leadership styles on the six key factors of organizational climate. The author advises readers to mix the different leadership styles: "Many studies, including this one, have shown that the more styles a leader exhibits, the better. Leaders who have mastered four or more - especially the authoritative, democratic, affiliative, and coaching styles - have the very best climate and business performance."
