Type Talk at Work Revised - How the 16 Personality Types Determine Your Success on the Job

4 stars (Can't we all just get along!) - This book with mainly two things in mind: communication and understanding. The author's adopt their longstanding research about the world of typewatching into an intelligible book about the main areas of the work environment such as problem solving, conflict resolution, time management, etc. Any manager that has direct reports would do themselves a favor by reading this book. This book will also provide support for a subordinate that doesn't quite "fit in." For those hurried types, each chapter ends with guidlines in a charted format for working with those of other preferences. Although this is somewhat useful, what I don't like about the approach is that they focus on the four preferences instead of focusing on the four major groupings, forcing the reader to combine and study the effects. For example, the charts will explain how an E should lead an I, etc. I believe that it would be much more useful to categorize the charts by the four major groups (e.g. NF's, NT's, SJ's, SP's) and how to interact with other types in each subject area. To the author's credit, the book does provide an overview on the major strengths and potential weaknesses of each of the 16 types in the workplace, for those who aren't familiar with the MBTI. However, it does not really provide a concrete method of determining type, leaving the reader somewhat guessing with the use of anecdotal phrases. Overall, I find this book well worth the investment. However, I would not recommend this book as an introduction to typewatching. If you are familiar with type, the specific chapters will be meaningful, if not, pick up either the precursor to this book by the same author's or one of David Keirsey's works prior to reading this. 4 stars (Better tool for self understanding than controlling others) - Kroeger and Thuesen are not my favorite MBTI authors, but the Type Talk books are a decent reference for those who consider themselves beginner and intermediate le...

The Renovare Spiritual Formation Bible

5 stars (A great addition to the line-up) - My first impressions of the Renorare Spiritual Formation Bible are, what a great addition to the already crowded line-up of translations, study and style Bibles! I have not yet plumbed the depths of all that is available in helps to spiritual formation, but I can tell it is rich and will be an important Bible in my future. 5 stars (Don't miss this spiritual journey for the world!) - Personally, I am glad the Renovare editorial board asked those of us involved in the project to provide material that was inspirational, in-depth, thought-provoking, intricate and complex. I have never been of the opinion that Christianity ought to be reducible to a bumper sticker or a t-shirt slogan or that a Bible had to be compact and portable to be of any value. Other generations had no problem with Bibles that weighed a pound or two and had no issue with being afforded the opportunity to access copious amounts of inspirational material. They only asked that it be written with piety and integrity and that it not skate the surface. They expected to work their intellects and their spirits when they cracked open commentaries by Luther or Calvin or the Cappadocian Fathers or Matthew Henry. I believe the Renovare Study Bible lies happily within that tradition of the deeper life. It is jam-packed with essays and meditations and spiritual insights that will keep you thinking and wondering and praying and wrestling for months and years. Look, you have Walter Brueggeman of Old Testament fame, you have Eugene Peterson of The Message and Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places, Virginia Stem Owens with all her wonderful literary ability, William Willimon of Duke Chapel with all his refreshing eloquence, Dallas Willard of The Divine Conspiracy, Richard Foster of Celebration of Discipline, Thomas Oden with his love of the old Christian writings, an incredible and eclectic gathering of believers spading the verdant earth of the Holy Bible. I am going throu...

Robert-s Rules of Order Newly Revised in Brief Roberts Rules of Order in Brief

5 stars (Buy this one first) - Even though I have both the "in Brief" and the unabridged editions, it is only the "in Brief" edition that I take with me to my meetings. I recommend that you buy and read the "in Brief" edition first. 5 stars (User-friendly meeting guide) - This has to be the most user-friendly book I've seen, starting with the inside of the front cover. It says, "If you only have 30 minutes" then read certain chapters. Somehow these experts figured out what the rest of us would need to know and how we would be looking for it. Maybe they had a panel of non-experts to critique. There are chapters detailing what the words are that you use to make something happen and how to use those words. Best of all, everywhere you look there are copious examples. In the back are succinct tables of those same words and there is also a chapter on how to find the completely complete information on the topic in the big "Robert's" book Most of the book is concerned with what you need to know as a member of the group. There are separate chapters for an officer of the group, which contain the things that most of us don't need to know. This is not a book you'd save for a winter evening curled up in front of the fireplace. It's to tell you all sorts of things you'd really rather not have to know, but that you really need to know. I've already decided that mine is mine alone. Nobody is going to borrow it because it would never come back to me. ...

Lean Thinking - Banish Waste and Create Wealth in Your Corporation- Revised and Updated

5 stars (Start eliminating waste!) - Buy this book, and pull up a stool! Thanks to Lean Thinking, I'm shedding waste right now. Wow! It's explosive! 4 stars (Impression of "Lean Thinking" as a Business Tool) - I found the book to be quite informative, applicable to any business, and a "must have" in our company library and in any company laying claim to being a "learning organization." 2 stars (Basic Basic Basic) - This book offered very little new information other than the basics that any of us who have ever done process improvement already know. Although the authors mention how Lean works in non-manufacturing environments, their examples are almost purely manufacturing. Not a bad read for a college student, but a waste of time for practitioners. Totally an introduction. ...

The Nursing Mother-s Companion- Fifth Revised Edition Nursing Mother-s Companion Paperback

5 stars (The Best Nursing Book You Can Buy) - I discovered this book two months into breastfeeding, and wished I had found it sooner. Everything you possibly need to know about nursing is under one cover. Unlike most other breastfeeding books that only discuss nursing a newborn, this book contains information on nursing newborns through toddlers. Highly recommend this book for all nursing mothers. 5 stars (Excellent nursing book!) - I bought this book as I am expecting my second baby and had problems nursing the first. I went through at least half a dozen lactation consultants with my first before I got the info I needed to make breastfeeding successful, and this was after the first two weeks and after my baby was hospitalized due to dehydration. I wish I had this book then, as it covers everything I needed to know about poor latch/insufficient milk supply. I am learning so much as I read the book and feel so much more confident as I approach the birth of my second. This book covers every issue I think you could come across with breastfeeding. 5 stars (Lots of good info) - Great book. Actually answered some questions (one in particular) for which I'd been unable to find answers elsewhere. Including at the Medela booth at a professional conference. Highly recommended, nonpartial, good book. ...

The OASIS Guide to Asperger Syndrome- Completely Revised and Updated - Advice- Support- Insight- and

5 stars (Aspie's Read This Book First) - I picked this book up when my 7 yr old son was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. I quickly discovered that I'm just as Asperger's as he is. This book has taught me more about Asperger's than my son's school or even his psychologist. If you truly want to understand Asperger's in all of it's flavors you must read this book. I've begun to understand myself in a whole new light and have found this book to be as comforting and reassuring as it is educational. 5 stars (The Asperger "Bible") - Of the several I've read, this book is absolutely the most comprehensive and well written available on the subject of Asperger's Syndrome. Thanks to the foresight and dedication of Barb Kirby in establishing the OASIS website and on-line forum, parents from all over the world are able to come together and compare notes on behavior and strategies, resulting in an enormous knowledge bank to draw from. Along with that, the authors present the combined wisdom of the various "experts" and discuss pros and cons of various treatment options, based primarily on actual experience and outcomes, with plenty of surveys, official statistics, and scientific studies. I had to laugh out loud early on when the authors state that if nothing else, it is an impressive book to plunk down on the table at school meetings! What really makes this book different from any other, is that the authors are both also mothers of kids on the spectrum, so you feel connected and understood while reading the book - truly an OASIS for anyone struggling to understand, respect, protect and champion their Aspie kids! 5 stars (A Must for Families or Professionals working with Aspergers) - This isn't a book, it is a "good deed" (no, make that GREAT deed). And even that isn't high enough praise. Page by page, we have found answers to dozens of questions that we have been asking, but previously finding no answers. We went to therapists, psychiatrists & psychologists, but unt...

CCNA 1 and 2 Companion Guide- Revised Cisco Networking Academy Program 3rd Edition Cisco Networ

2 stars (Poorly written) - I am using this book in a CCNA semester 1 class. Although it is by Cisco and therefore contains the information they want you to know, it is poorly written. It is as if the original text were 3 times as long, and to shorten it, they had to take out every third sentence, because it does not flow, and concepts are often only half-explained. I am *often* reading it and think "What????" (And I'm fairly certain it's not just me - I have a B.S. and M.S in Computer Science and plenty of real-world computer experience). All in all, I have to say that this is not a high-quality book. Although it's not a substitute for the CCNA material, I really like the book called "Interconnections" by Radia Perlman. 5 stars (An Excellent Companion) - Cisco seems to have made a transition from being a high performance workstation and server supplier to being a supplier of high end networking equipment. It seems like you cannot go into an Internet Service Provider without seeing at least some Cisco equipment. As such, being an authority on Cisco equipment and even more important understanding the Cisco approach to networking is a good start on employment. And the crowning achievement is the Cisco Certified Network Associate certificate. This book is a companion to the on line course. It was written by the people who wrote the exam so it covers what you need to know to pass it. ...

The New Concise History of the Crusades- Revised Edition

4 stars (Insight in medieval history) - The New Concise History shows a good view on the Medieval 'madness' in which thoudands and thousands of people wandered through Europe, disorganised, plundering and pillaging, without the organisational powers of the former Roman armies driven by religious fanatism. It also gives insight into the current situation of the Middle East. Once the christian knights of Europe were not far from the Jihad warriors of today...Wruthless, without compassion, murdering anyone that had not the Christian faith. Especially the Jews of Germany had to endur in the start of the Crusads....In so far af very good and readable book. The author does not use any difficult language, myself being from Holland, and it gives a very good oversight and insight into Europe around the year 1000... 5 stars (GOOD WORK TO GET YOU STARTED ) - As other reviewers have pointed out, there are pros and cons to this particular work. I have some reservations myself, but overall, found the work good. This work does indeed give us a good, if somewhat brief, overview of the crusades. The author does present some ideas that are a bit different than than those that have been traditionally taught, and for the most part, unquestioned. This, in my opinion is a good thing as it makes us all think. On the other hand, I am not enough of an expert to be able to verify with any validity some of his statements. I do feel the author tried to be fare. On the other hand he tells us "research" is able to give us much more insight as to what was in the hearts and minds of men and women several centuries ago. I find this hard to beleave at times. I also felt the author sort of fluffed over and flitted through some pretty important aspects of the crusades. The act of completely obliterating city after city and the killing of hundreds of innocent people, really deserves more than one or two sentences. All in all, the work is a good survey and I feel it's greatest value is to spu...

The New Oxford Annotated Bible- New Revised Standard Version with the Apocrypha- Third Edition Hard

3 stars (Helpful for the novice?) - Of all the english Bibles I will only give five stars to the KJV. It saddens me how many different versions abound in the english language, NRSV, NIV, NKJV, AB and more and all the feud around it. True many think they need the current english written language to undertake the reading of the Holy Word. I own several english versions and study Bibles. It has confused me to the point, that I now have started studying ancient Greek, to read the words of the Apostles and Paul as they spoke them. It does not mean I will not use those many versions to clarify and compare the meaning when I am in doubt. But I am sometimes afraid of become a Pharisee, a scolar of the Word, with an empty heart for our fellow brothers and sisters, one of the greatest sin. 5 stars (Outstanding) - The book was in excellent condition and I received it in plenty of time for my class. 5 stars (Like buying a fresh set of eyes) - Forget what you know about how easy the Bible is. Forget how simple it is to boil the Bible down into a practical lifestyle for today. Here is the Bible in all its historical complexity, in a rigorous and dependable English translation. This NRSV is, in many ways, quite accessible: It is well designed and cleanly arranged. The detailed notes and scholarly chapter introductions help break up big questions into manageable pieces. For Protestants like me, this is especially helpful when it comes to the Apocrypha. Also, at the sentence level this is an approachable and even warm translation. The "N" in "NRSV" means no "thees and thous" to trip over, as well as the elimination of gender biases not found in the original Greek and Hebrew. In other ways, this edition is very challenging. Gone are the "Apply This!" tips from your Evangelical pals. No one's explaining why Nehemiah is a good example of leadership, or the church today can take heed to Paul's letter to the Romans. You don't even get the comfort of "B.C." and "A.D." in the dates, whi...

The New Interpreter-s Study Bible- New Revised Standard Version With the Apocrypha

5 stars (Desert-island Bible for Moderates) - This is the one Bible I would take with me unhesitatingly to a deserted island. The notes are based off the larger 12-volume commentary set, and are concise and incredibly thorough. They are critical, honest, and sober. It is also more moderate than the New Oxford Annotated Bible (third edition) and the HarperCollins Study Bible. Both Bibles tend to shy away from affirming topics like Jesus' divinity, but the NISB readily acknowledges Christological and even Trinitarian passages in Scripture. Moderates will love this Bible. Those that are too "liberal" (I quote from others) may not like it because it does have some pretty specific views on certain topics. Those that are too "conservative" may not like it because it is still a critical Bible. But those who sit in the middle will love it, as I do. As a youth director, I love it because it does give some spiritual insights into Scripture that other critical Bibles do not. As an educator, I love it because I have an historically and theologically honest Bible that covers everything I want to say in class. Other Bibles are too rigid, I think, either in their so-called conservatism, or so-called liberalism (do we really need labels?). I must agree with Bruce Metzger, that this Bible is ideal for pastors, students, and academically minded laypersons. Therefore, were you to banish me to a desert island, this would be the one Bible I took with me. 5 stars (NISB NRSV w/ Apocrypha) - An excellent ecumenical Bible. It does not lean toward the conservative interpretation nor to the liberal. It is a scholarly annotation with appropriate translations for Hebrew and Greek words and phrases. Anyone could read the notes and gain a better understanding of the history and religious traditions prevalent at the time of the original writing. These annotations seek to inform rather than convert the reader. Cross references are helpful and numerous. 4 stars (NISB for serious study.) -...

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World- Finding Intimacy With God in the Busyness of Life Revised Ed

5 stars (Wonderful Resource) - I'd been having difficulty meditating and feel God directed me to this resource. It is most helpful and has been an inspiration to me. I feel it would be a fine tool for women's Bible study groups also or for book review groups. While directed at women, men may also find it insightful. It is written with a light hand but has so much depth. I plan to reread it often. 5 stars (Excellent Book) - I have read this book a few times and have given it to other woman in our church as well. This book is sound and extremely encouraging as most books adress the "Mary" aspect of life only, whereas Joanna address the "Martha" in all of us who are wives, mothers and just woman in general, wanting to know our Lord more intimately, yet we have so much to do. I read both "Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World" and "A woman after God's own heart" - by Elizabeth George at the same time. What a blessing to have such gifted sisters in Christ who God can use to encourage and challenge us all. Worth reading again and again. 4 stars (I Needed This Book) - This book was really helpful to me in making me realize that I really do need to "slow down" and listen for God's presence more. I could not have read this book at a more perfect time as i was invited to be a part of a prayer group and needed to have encouragment to slow down a little more. Which, as an evangelical liberal is probably the area of growth that i need the most as a daughter of God. My only real critique of the book was that some of the illustrations seemed to be more geared toward middle aged women as I think this sort of book should be geared toward ALL christians. ...

The Power of Your Subconscious Mind- Revised Edition

5 stars (Food for Thought) - This book was recommended to me by an acquaintance, a man in his 70s who still runs his own business. We had a conversation at a wedding in which my husband and this man's wife were both part of the wedding party and we weren't. He told me a lot of interesting things about how this book had helped him and the last thing he said when we said goodbye was: The Power of the Subconscious Mind. It's by Murphy. A couple of months passed and I didn't even try to find the book. But then synchronistically, events in my life made me recall our conversation and I decided to get the book. This book is very uplifiting. Sometimes life seems like it is not really within our control. This book enables its readers to feel like they do have some control over how things go. On one hand, my rational mind still pokes at me and says, You cannot really believe this. On the other hand, in the intervening months, I've gone from being a librarian type who wore baggy clothes and had no self-esteem to someone that people pay attention to. I am now routinely told I am beautiful when I walk to work in the morning. Yesterday a 23 year old man told me I was "hard to miss" because I was "stunning". (I'm 42.) It's not like I exchanged bodies with Angelina Jolie or anything, so what could be making this difference? I think it must be that a few months ago, I "knew" I was dumpy and had lost my looks and now I "know" I'm beautiful. I'm healthier and happier than I've been in years. I've even managed to improve my eyesight with the techniques in this book. Maybe it's just a coincidence. But I don't think so. 5 stars (I`m so TERRIBLE when i`m filled with hard drugs) - Sorry everyone being a drug addict since 13 years old still affects i`m now 65.Buy this excellent book on the truth/subconscious it has everything you need to know to become a success.i`m even readin this book and i`m a retard on drugs. 5 stars (The power of the REAL TRUTH) - Excellent book on the truth o...

The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying- The Spiritual Classic - International Bestseller- Revised and

4 stars (Skilled Overview Of Tibetan Principles But Doesn't Make Death Any Less A Thing Of Horror To My Western Mind) - This is a well-researched book that covers its topic with a professional thoroughness. I admire the author's devotion to a subject that makes most of us, especially in the twenty-first century United States, cringe. I have nothing negative to say about his Buddhist slant here and think he describes the Book of the Dead and its passages well. "In the Occident, where death is much feared, the art of dying is little practiced." How very true. All that said, despite Gaffney's seeming love of death (not just acceptance, but real embracing love) the state of biological conclusion seems horrific to me. Were I a believer in an afterlife, if I could just have faith, or better yet, proof, then I might subscribe to his "death is an opportunity to evolve" view, but all I can see in death is an ending filled with pain, the cause of grief, the separation of loved ones. I tried to wrap my mind around the views herein and I do find interest in contemplating another cosmology's take on the ending of a physical (chapter in) life, but to me, death remains a concept steeped in horror no matter how deeply I have tried to grasp for a way to hope that we might be reborn, either on this earth or in another plane, the bardo, Heaven...anyplace. This book ought to become the edition of choice for those who seek an accomodating starting point for one of religion's greatest texts. My lack of feeling for its tenets in no way means I do not regard this as a fine book that might help many people study Tibetan viewpoints or find peace in the inescapable fact that is death. Pace. 4 stars (Sogal is a fine teacher) - the mayor problems with the "unenlighned" is, that there mind is not clear. They mix "moral" with "neurotic thoughts" , actually the mix evertything and the unenlighned females are mixing it more. That is one of the mayor messages of Sogal. Finally the "great spiri...

Devotional Classics- Revised Edition - Selected Readings for Individuals and Groups

4 stars (Our Legacy) - "Devotional Classics" is the companion volume to Foster's "Spiritual Classics." Foster and Smith designed it as weekly devotional guide to 52 classic historical authors on the devotional life. They catalog their readings using the Renovare conceptualization of six strands in historical spirituality: the prayer-filled life, the virtuous life, the Spirit-empowered life, the compassionate life, the word-centered life, and the sacramental life. These six categories along with their 52 representative authors combined with the introductions by Foster and Smith, offer readers a fine introduction to Christian devotional thinking. As with "Spiritual Classics," the snippets are at times hard to fully digest out of the context of their original writings. Hopefully, readers will be motivated to read many of the 52 author's full works. Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," and the forthcoming "Beyond the Suffering: The Story of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction." 5 stars (Eye Opening) - I've always considered myself a student of theology and spritually deep, until I read the readings in Devotional Classics. This book opened my eyes to a whole new world of Christian devotion. The book is an excellent compilation of some of history's greatest Christians and their experiences with God, not merely their doctrinal beliefs. Richard Foster's comments are also very insightful. I highly recommend this book and always have several copies on hand to give away. 5 stars (Portal to the 'Old Book' - Wisdom From Those who Got It) - In the introduction Foster cites CS Lewis' recommendation for reading one 'old book' for every new book one reads. 'Old books' can speak with voices outside of the biases of our time and document the inter-generational story of Christ and his Church. Classics that have been beneficial for centuries are more likely to be beneficial than the latest glossy at the local b...

Specialty Shop Retailing- How to Run Your Own Store Revised and Updated

5 stars (Most helpful book I've read yet!) - I am just in the beginning stages of starting/planning my own business & this book is by far the most helpful one I've read so far. The author covers an enormous range of topics that are invaluable to a "newbie" like me- lots of topics I never even considered. She has a ton of great ideas about advertising & marketing that really got my creative juices flowing. There are some great tips for buying merchandise for your store, and not only does she discuss how to setup and arrange your store and storefront, she gives invaluable advice about running your business office as well. Just a few of the other topics include managing employees, customer service, setting store policies, and developing relationships with vendors. Like I said, she covers just a little bit of everything and I feel much better equipped now to handle this business venutre- thanks to her invaluable expertise and experience. Well done. 5 stars (I really love this book!) - This book got me so hooked in reading that I didn't even want to go to bed last night. I like how this book is formatted. It tells you straight to the point on what to do. Then, she illustrates why it's beneficial to do that with real life experiences. Every sentence in this book has so much value. I kept typing up notes that ended up six pages long and possibly even more once I finished reading it today! This book is a keeper! 5 stars (Specialty Shop Retail) - Took notes throughout the book! Even though I've owned the business for three years I gleaned lots of invaluable information from the experience of Orange and her husband. Would recommend to anyone in retail--new to it or an "old hat." ...

Learning to Weave- Revised Edition

4 stars (Not really for a beginer-beginer! ) - The most important thing I learned from this book is that I'm not ready for this book! I inherited my mother's table loom some time ago and have not had time to look into weaving until recently. To get myself started, I purchased a number of books on weaving so that I could build up to tackling her loom. I found both "Weaving Without a Loom" and "You Can Weave" very helpful for a beginner. They taught simple terminology, basic weaves, the use of a variety of materials not only for weaving but for looms, and the use of patterns. Chandler and Redding's book, "Learning to Weave," looks to be an excellent resource for weaving on my table loom, but just perusing it's pages, I realized that I still need to work a little with the simpler looms before getting on to the main task. In reading the book, I found the notion of samples a fine idea. I started making them with some of the simpler looms, and have even found a use for some of the samples I've made. The suggestion regarding practice color combinations was also helpful. In looking forward to the daunting task of warping or dressing my table loom, I suspect that the authors' suggestions with respect to managing the warp threads and the alternative suggestions with respect to approaching the physical task itself will make my first experience much less frustrating. But first we have to build up the courage! 5 stars (This book is a must have!) - I received an antique 4-harness loom for my birthday this year and along with that was given some videos by Deborah Chandler. The videos were excellent and got me on my way but I still needed a reference to give more specific info. So, I asked experienced weavers for their advice on a book or two to buy and to the person every one recommended this one as "the bible". I knew it'd be good since Deborah's videos are so good and indeed I wasn't disappointed. Throughout the book there are very clear detailed line drawings of...
