Stop Singing the Blues- 10 Powerful Strategies for Hitting the High Notes in Your Life

5 stars (The Most Powerful Book I've Read This Year!) - I think this book must be the source of the old saying, "Good things come in small packages." I've known Cynthia casually for about three years and knew she was working on a book, so when she called and offered to send me a review copy, I was delighted to get it. When it arrived, however, I admit I was surprised at how small it was. At 112 pages I wasn't sure how important a book it would be. Having read it over the weekend, I now believe this little "manual" is destined to for great things. Dr Barnett has packed amazing material into ten short chapters that made me cry, laugh and certainly inspired me. Her sub-title is, "10 Powerful Strategies for Hitting the High-Notes in Your Life" and she more than fulfills her promise. In a busy world where we "don't have time" to read, this little gem is perfect. Precisely because it is short and powerful and practical, I think it is destined to be a best-seller, perhaps a classic. Like "The Richest Man in Babylon" (less than 100 pages) or "As A Man Thinketh" (about the same length), both written about a hundred years ago and still in the best-seller category, this is one of those books that I'll stick in my briefcase and read over and over again. Her "lessons" are right on the money, and the stories and examples are appropriate and very motivating. This is one of those few, wonderful books that I'll use as a model for my own writing, and that's about the highest praise I can give. Her story-telling is absolutely marvelous. The one criticism that will be leveled against the book is that it's a "woman's book." It's written by a woman and nearly all her examples are about women over-coming obstacles, dealing with difficulty and achieving in life, and while some men will find that off-putting, that's a shame. These are principles about how HUMANS achieve greatness and we men need examples of these truths just as much as women. Buy and read this book. Buy extra copies for...

Singing Coach

5 stars (Great Fun and Helpful Product) - I thought this was a really solid piece of software. It taught me alot of things that I needed to know about singing. I am not a professional and could not afford vocal lessons so this really was a HUGE help. The ability to sing a wide range of songs made it even more useful. Being able to see my pitch helped teach me what types of songs are good for me to sing. From what I have seen so far the music library is growing every week with better and better songs. If they keep adding songs like this there really is no limit what I can do with the software. 3 stars (Good for the beginner, but not much more.) - This program has quirky characters that teach you the basics of singing, such as breathing, posture and warm ups. Being able to see what pitch you are hitting helps a lot to strengthen the beginning singer. The reason I gave this only 3 stars, however, is that once you are done with the basics, the only thing that the program can give you is you pitch history while singing one of the songs. While this is a useful information, there isn't a wide enough varity in songs to make using this feature terribly fun and there aren't lessons to encourage you to work through the songs in a specific order. I was also quite disappointed with their online song library. This version comes with 4 free songs to down load from their song library, and I only found two that I was even willing to sing and have a vague liking for. None of my favorite songs were there. The lists of songs were quite small. They also, beyond the 4 free songs, want to charge what I think is an outragous charge per song. Get this if you are a rank beginner or need help with your pitch and are happy practicing on public domain folk songs. It's a fine piece of software if that's what you are looking for. 4 stars (Great Product) - bought this program for my daughter who loves watching American Idol and now all she wants to do is sing. We bought her this ...

Singing Coach Unlimited

2 stars (Not what I had hoped) - I found this product to be difficult to use, and not very helpful as a practicing tool. The flash animation was too elaborate, and slowed my computer up to the point where the sceen was not keeping up with my perfomance. But that could just be my computer's fault. What annoyed me most of all was how I was being graded on my ability to hold a note exactly, instead of using inflections and vibrato, etc. So, although a good idea in theory, it was not worth the price I paid. 3 stars (Good for beginning voice training) - Singing Coach Unlimited is helpful software for someone first beginning voice training or for "retuning" your voice after a long idle time. However, the lessons appear to be geared toward kids. I found the pitch tracking to be a nice feature. The compose feature is limited and will only allow composing the melody (no accompaniment). The ability to change keys for any song is great. The song download selection from Carry-A-Tune is limited, although you can import songs form other sources. I have had some software glitches (recording failures and recording delays) on my Windows XP PC which meets the recommended system requirements. (Carry-A-Tune has not yet responded with a fix.) 3 stars (Good Technology, But the Presentation is Really for Kids) - The software appears to work quite well, and I believe that using this product will improve my singing. The real-time pitch tracking is a tremendous aid for anyone who (like me) has trouble finding notes with their singing voice. On this basis, I would have given the product 4 1/2 or 5 stars. However, the bad news is that the presentation of this product is really designed for kids. There are characters who guide you through the process, and unfortunately there does not seem to be a way to turn them off. It is a bit like watching an episode of Barney in terms of the level of hokiness (e.g., an opera singing octupus who talks like Chef Boyardee. Yuck!) Ideally, Carry-A-T...
