4 stars (the doors of cognition !) - this book opens the doors of cognition ; in fact , when tiing a famous person ( ie : demora , luther king , kenwrinkel ) to notions of social psychology like ( social role , influence , aggression , etc ) , it allows our memory to widen , and teach a method to learn more and more easily ! that is , build couples : idea and picture ! this book uses cognition methods and invite us to study that field ! ... opening the doors of cognition ...teaches too , that very simple tools may have terrific and positive effects ! 5 stars (Social Psychology: Unraveling the Mystery) - The most valuable benefits of adopting this book for my class was the unbelievable support from the publisher. A&B provided a study guide, a test bank, a huge package of transparencies, a powerpoint presentation CD...--all of this for free. I have been astonished by the sevice and free benfits I have gotten as the result of choosing this otherwise excellent book. 4 stars (Amazon.com, please check your spelling) - According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a principle is a comprehensive and fundamental law, doctrine or assumption; a principal is a person who has controlling authority or is in a leading position. Zumdahl correctly named his book "Chemical PRINCIPLES". Amazon.com, please follow suit. 4 stars (Good and bad) - The main strength of the book is its large amount of interesting and largely error-free problems. Unfortunately, some of the more advanced material isn't really well explained. A good example is the book's coverage of particle-in-a-box: it's covered well enough for a beginning student to solve some problems, but without the more thorough follow up you get in a quantum class, you're just pushing symbols. The same goes for many of the other, somewhat more advanced topics in the book - MO theory, gas dynamics, etc. It may have made pchem and inorganic a little easier, but it made for frustrating reading at the time. 5 stars (Information) - This book is the current book for Chemistry 107 at the University of Illinois, taught by none other than Professor Zumdahl. Freakonomics- A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything

4 stars (Entertaining and a bit educational) - I enjoyed reading this; I'm not sure I believe all of it. There was no methodology presented, so I have to take the author's word that he did the research. And, isn't that what this book is about, NOT taking somebody's word that a presented fact is the absolute truth? The information is interesting, but I found the underlying message, that what we accept as the truth isn't always that simple or easy, far more intriguing and frightening. Take the theories with a grain of salt, and enjoy the imaginative, accessible view of economics. Who knew economics could be fun? 5 stars (Too long, too short - the critics need a unifying theme) - First, let me start off by explaining that my exposure to this material was via a CD Audio book that I checked out at the library. The book is read aloud by Stephen Dubner (one of the authors) and he does a fine job of reading it. Plus, since he knows exactly where to put the inflection in his voice, some of the subtle wordplay becomes more apparent as you hear him speak it. I think that may have also given me a better understanding of the points the authors were trying to make - points that many of the critics of this book have either missed or misunderstood. I have a stack of books next to my bed that I read every evening. This audio version allowed me to complete another book during otherwise wasted time on my commute to and from work. One of the best reasons to listen to the audio version comes in the last chapter where they are discussing names. It is certainly more difficult to keep track of the various lists of names without having them written down in front of you, but you do get the advantage hearing the pronunciation of a few of them. Three of the names are rather amusing to hear aloud especially compared to their spelling. 5 stars ( FileMaker Pro 7 Bible (Bible (Wiley))) - I have used this book to learn enough for advanced programmong of a complex Filemaker database. Reading it from front to back and highlighting what I need to know/do is extremeley easy, enjoyable and clear. I love this book. Simple, well-written and complete. 4 stars (An excellent revision to the series) - The FileMaker Pro Bible series has been consistently good, much better than many others in the line, such as cloying, annoying PhotoShop Bible. Schwartz and Cohen do an excellent job of compiling material on using FileMaker Pro 7. Yes, you could find it all in the FileMaker Pro Help file on the FileMaker site or in a various news groups, not as mere regurgitation, but as a well organized compendium But they save the reader the effort and frequent trouble of doing so. The material is well-organized, coherent and free of the forced amateurish attempts at humor that mar so many technical books today. In short, if you use FileMaker Pro 7, you need this book. I've been using FileMaker since its release . . . and the progressive volumes of this series have always been at hand. Accounting Best Practices

5 stars (A 10,000% return on the investment.) - This book has the right idea of putting the main points in the tables for quick reference and the narrative for each point. In addition, I like the Ease, Duration and Cost of implementation of each best practice which gives me an idea for prioritization. Ordered more copies for the departments. Wish they had more books like these that give practical suggestions instead of theory. 5 stars (A Valuable Resource) - I found Accounting Best Practices a valuable resource for objectively evaluating my accounting department's business practices and procedures. Mr. Bragg has identified the specific tasks of each of the accounting departments's functions and has made suggestions for efficiencies. The author states the key factors in the successful implementation of the best practices in accounting. Each chapter presents an exhibit of "Implementation Issues Best Practices" describing the implementation costs, ease and duration of each suggested practice change. This information allowed me to implement the easiest and least costly changes to my accounting department's procedures, thus gaining credibility with upper managment to support the changes involving addional resources. As a Controller, Best Practices assisted me to focus on the value-added tasks of my department and identifying where my staff's efforts are best utilized to support the corporate objectives. My department has become more efficient, allowing for individual growth opportunities. I highly recommend this book for anyone managing an accounting department. Cricket Explained

5 stars (A fantastic guide for the recently initiated) - I had the pleasure of catching two of the five days of an England test match against South Africa at the Oval during a recent holiday in London. As an American and an avid baseball fan, all I had ever heard of cricket was "boring", "incomprehensible" and, yet again, "boring". I found my two days at the Oval fascinating and was fortunate enough to not only have the patience to pay attention to the game during those two days, but also to stumble upon this great book at a bookstore on Fulham. I was even more fortunate to find the book between the two days I attended, read it from cover to cover, and have become a bit of a pest now to my American nonbelieving friends. Cricket is a great sport and if you want the quick and dirty, well here it is. From Googly to Howzhat, it's all here. Now I know enough to pester my Indian neighbors during the next test match. I wish I had this book last year during the World Cup. Great read. 5 stars (Informative and amusing at the same time) - This book is best suited to somebody who has witnessed some cricket without having a clue what was going on. The book is filled with answers to questions typical of the ones a novice might ask (why do they all wear white? don't they all get bored? who's WINNING???). Fun cartoons throughout. I understand that the UK edition of this book is called 'what is a googly?'. 1 stars (Save your pennies) - Cricket the grand old English game, the gentlemens game. More research should have explained the games heritage and how it was introduced to the countries that were under English rule, thus giving a greater understanding of how the game came to dominate in the former English colonies. I think that this emphasis would have made for not only a deeper understanding of why Cricket has failed to establish itself as a serious sport in many countries that were not part of the English commowealth but also why the game is steaped in English traditio...

Best Aikido- The Fundamentals Illustrated Japanese Classics

5 stars (Easy to understand) - I have read several aikido books that demonstrate visually, proper aikido techniques. This is the first book I have read that was easy to follow, easy to understand and easy to remember. Although it was easy in all these areas, it wasn't at all lacking. The information in this book is "must have" for any beginning aikido practitioner. 5 stars (Best Book on the Basics of Aikido) - I have 4 other titles on Aikido and have browsed through quite a few others. I must say this is by far the best on the basics of Aikido. The pictures are reasonably clear and the descriptions are reasonably detailed. However, I would have liked all the techniques executed (and pictures taken) without the hakama on so that the readers can have a good look at the footwork as well. 4 stars (The Fundamentals, from the second Doshu) - _Best Aikido_ is a fine translation of the original Japanese textbook by the noted scholar of Buddhism and aikido, Dr John Stevens. _Best Aikido_ could probably be considered one of the essential cornerstones of an aikido practitioners library. It contains waza patterns for all of the fundamentals of aikido techniques: the major pins (including gokyo) and throwing techniques (excluding koshi-nage) from basic attacks. Helpfully, omotoe and ura variations are included. _Best Aikido 2_ covers more intensive and advanced practice, including weapons disarming, multiple attacks, and more intricate applications of the fundamentals. This book will not teach you aikido. No book can teach you aikido. IMO, aikido can only be learned as fostered in the environment that O-sensei developed in his sublime martial arts pedagogy. Aikido is learned through regular practice, in a dojo, in partnered co-operation with a variety of people, of various shapes and sizes. _Best Aikido_ is meant to be a supplementary resource textbook, to be consulted after class or in preparation for exams. Mind Gym - An Athlete-s Guide to Inner Excellence

2 stars (Not well written, rehashes other books.) - I have just about every book on the topic of sports performance. I've read others that were more impactful and helpful. Granted, this book is good if you're just looking for some inspiration that might eventually lead you to results. For immediate results to use on one's game, however, this book isn't it! As another reviewer said, it's clumsily written. For my hard earned money, I'd like something that I can actually use on my game right away. If you're a couch potato athlete that only watches a game, this book is probably good. My brother-in-law loves it. He's never played a sport in his life, but is a big fan. For competitive athletes who are more interested in RESULTS and can get their cliches from TV announcers, this book isn't for them. I'd give it one star, but those who've met the guy seem to like him enough to log onto amazon and write a review. Nothing personal, but I can't give this anything like the rating the others did. 5 stars (Excellence for all life's pursuits) - Mind Gym is one of my favorite books to pickup whenever I need a little inspiration and encouragement. While the many stories and quotes are derived from the world of professional athletics, the book is really about creating excellence in one's life with applicability to any pursuit and any profession. The main theme is that once one reaches a certain level of competency, the level he achieves in performance will be determined by how well he learns to utilize his mind. With this, the author takes us on a fascinating tour of the minds of some of the world's greatest coaches and athletes; their successes, their challenges, and the mental tools they employed to succeed.
