Blink - The Power of Thinking Without Thinking

3 stars (Blinking) - Ok but not great...seem to wonder off in too many different directions at times. 5 stars (Really Interesting and an Easy Read) - Blink is a look at all the various things scientists have discovered about how we think without knowing we're thinking. It particularly takes a long, hard look at why it is that people's first impressions so often conflict with either what careful analysis says or what people think they believe. Gladwell looks at a broad range of applications of these ideas. He looks at why, even though Pepsi wins the blind "Pepsi Challenge," Coke continues to be the market leader. He investigates the psychology and split-second thinking that caused the death of an unarmed, fleeing immigrant from over 40 gunshots fired by NYPD officers. He looks at various factors that affect everything from standardized test scores to electing a President. Some have suggested that all Gladwell really tells us is that our first impressions are sometimes right and sometimes wrong. If after reading this book that's all you come away with, you have completely missed the point. The point is that whether those impressions are right or wrong is governed by a complex set of physiologic and experiential rules, and that we can do something about them. Cops can do things to make sure those first impressions don't result in an innocent death. And yes, you can learn to tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi when you drink a whole can, not just a sip. Gladwell is a writer for the New Yorker, and his writing style is very much like a bunch of magazine articles. But they are very GOOD magazine articles, and you want to read them all. 4 stars (Informative) - This book was very interesting to me, though I will admit it got boring at parts. Some sections were just very repetitive and seemed to be overkill, but the overall message the book sent was intriguing. It helped me understand the way the mind works and how people use this knowledge of their mind...

Thinking for a Change- 11 Ways Highly Successful People Approach Life and Work

4 stars (Insightful!) - Anyone can apply the principles in John C. Maxwell's book, in any business, in any circumstance, in any stage of life. Great thinkers have an unlimited capacity to achieve, and Maxwell tells you how to become one. While books of this nature are typically geared toward entrepreneurs or those in leadership roles, we recommend this book to any person who is committed to ongoing personal development and living life with purpose. You will benefit from learning more about the different specific thinking skills that have an impact on your daily decisions. Maxwell teaches an unusual skill: how to make conscious choices that shape your thoughts, your actions and, ultimately, your success. Think about it. 5 stars (You're thinking right now...right?) - Several years ago, one of the best leaders I know, someone who managed to rise to the top of every organization he was ever in --including the one he currently works for, told me the secret to his success. "Think like a leader," he said. I've often meditated on his words. I've discovered that they are absolutely true... In his book, Maxwell explains how you can leverage the power of your thoughts to acheive unthinkable success: He gives you all the different ways leaders think and then shows you how to do it yourself. Just like my friend said: "Think like a leader." Order this book and find out how. 4 stars (You may not use all of it....) - You may not use ALL of the ideas in this book BUT if you find just one that helps you - then it is worth the investment. I believe each one of John Maxwell's types of thinking that are identified and briefly explained could be individual books all by themselves. The thing I appreciated most about "Thinking For a Change" was that it gave me "just enough" of what I was looking for. My suggestion is to read "Thinking.. " then pick the area you most need work on and delve deeper with other resources. Reading this book, gave me one key concept on strategic thinking wh...

Lean Thinking - Banish Waste and Create Wealth in Your Corporation- Revised and Updated

5 stars (Start eliminating waste!) - Buy this book, and pull up a stool! Thanks to Lean Thinking, I'm shedding waste right now. Wow! It's explosive! 4 stars (Impression of "Lean Thinking" as a Business Tool) - I found the book to be quite informative, applicable to any business, and a "must have" in our company library and in any company laying claim to being a "learning organization." 2 stars (Basic Basic Basic) - This book offered very little new information other than the basics that any of us who have ever done process improvement already know. Although the authors mention how Lean works in non-manufacturing environments, their examples are almost purely manufacturing. Not a bad read for a college student, but a waste of time for practitioners. Totally an introduction. ...

5 stars (The magic of thinking big) - (short and sweet) I read lots of self help books, this was by far the best book, I've ever read. "Two thumbs way up!" 5 stars (An Easy and Insightful Read...) - This is a quick and easy read that is sure to have at least a few points any reader can get benefit from. 4 stars (Rob I.) - Excellent read loaded with useful, practical information. Laid out in a clear concise fashion, this book really gets to the essence of what it takes to achieve your dreams. Perhaps, one of the best I've ever seen in the self-help arena. ...

Thinking Mathematically 3rd Edition

5 stars (Math Book) - Wonderful condition, shipped very very promply. I recieved it within days. Seller was good, I give my highest recomendation. 5 stars (This book is truly outstanding.....) - As an upper level high school mathematics teacher, I have to say that Blitzer's text "Thinking Mathematically" is truly an outstanding book! - for both the student and the teacher. He explains concepts in an extraordinarly thorough and direct way, with a lot of great worked out examples and terrific exercise sets that increase student knowledge and insight regarding the concepts and computations. Having used both this book and Blitzer's other PreCalculus text, I can honestly say that his books for the secondary market put most of the other books out there to shame - there's really just no comparison. If you're a student who really wants to learn math, or a teacher who appreciates great support materials, then you really do have to get this text, as well as Blitzer's other texts, such as "PreCalculus". You won't find a better book out there regarding secondary/college prep math and it's teaching/ applications. 3 stars (Not a good book to study with) - I taught a course with this book and there are several typo's in the book. ...

Asking the Right Questions- A Guide to Critical Thinking- Seventh Edition

5 stars (Outstanding) - Currently I am studying for the LSAT (Law School Aptitude Test) The major section on the test is logical reasoning. I have read many books from LSAT books to books on critical reasoning. This book has finally made everything clear to me. It presents topics in understandable language, with excellent questions to ask as you read or hear an argument. If you are preparing for any test such as LSAT or GMAT or just want to be able to understand arguments that you hear on TV or editorials in newspapers or political speaches, get this book. 5 stars (If I could get this book long before...) - I bought a lot of books in amazon. In the beginning, I just was a sponge, the worse way this book pointed out. After reading this, I was happy and sad. The happy one is this book exactly addresses what I need in my career including self study and work. The sad is I need to re-read all the books I've read, which may take me about 1 to 2 years. It's the most important book I've bought until now. Thank you. 5 stars (foundation for critical thinking) - Although this book will probably tell you that personal testimony is not very effective as an evidence since you do not know me, I still want to contribute here to say that this book is terrific. Throughout the book, the author guides you what questions to ask when you look at an argument. This book provides me with insights to how to approach arguments and opinions. More importantly, it helps me understand how to revisit my own opinions and positions and how to contruct my argument more effectively. ...

How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci- Seven Steps to Genius Every Day

2 stars (Kind of Pointless...) - The book was very well written and i must say that i really did enjoy the introduction chapters which was filled with bits of Leonardo's life, work, and other mentions of factual knowledge that was quite interesting. However, once the core of the book started to unfold it became very dry reading and the "self-help"'ish way the book is written becomes monotonous and i began to feel that Gelb himself is just too over enthused about Leonardo Da Vinci. I agree that he is a very noteworthy person to idolize and model your own life around to some extent but in some of the sections dealing with the senses and "what to do's" it seemed like he was stretching a bit and making Leonardo too godlike for his own right. Also, another qualm i had with the book was when he listed his own group of people he felt were noteworthy and i feel that it was tactless to do so because your ranking people from different genres, walks of lfe, skills and talents, and placing them as if it were the olympics in competition and it seemed to be another way to just give more praise to Leonardo in his fascination and obsession to put Da Vinci on some sort of pedestal. Again, i feel Leonardo was a brilliant man but to write a book solely on the content of how to think like him, i feel, is pointless and has no substance because he himself is not writing the book but only a mere fan who has never met the man, has no relevance to the time period Da Vinci lived in, and, again, ISNT DA VINCI writing a book about how to think like him. Many people reading this may say "well, what about biographies, those are people who may not have known the person they are writing about". Very true, but this is not a biography. Instead this is a list of thing you can do yourself to mock the way Da Vinci decided things, thought, and lived his life. These are purely things that only the living specimen that is Da Vinci would know. Any other person writing the book about the mechanics in which ...

A Whole New Mind- Moving from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age

5 stars (Exciting Mindset) - A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink is an extraordinary book. Finally we are admitting that intelligence, performance, and yes--even success--can be achieved by those who appear to be more creative than academic. Pink goes to great lengths to explain his position relative to the kind of successful worker Americans must become in order to avoid being unemployed. Even better, Pink includes sections called Portfolios where the reader is given suggestions for ways to strengthen his/her "whole new mind." 4 stars (Food for thought) - Where the big issues are concerned -- how to revitalize the U.S. economy in the age of outsourcing, why isn't our educational system working and how do we go about fixing it, etc. -- I've always felt that it was more important to raise the right questions than to come up with quick answers. By that standard, this book is a winner. I think most of us would agree that the world of work (on the personal as well as the national level) has changed radically in the last 20 years. It's not a major logical leap to conclude that, rather than choosing to cultivate the skills and abilities that led to success in the "information age," we should broaden our range. It's possible to argue with the author's list of "six senses," but they're suggestions rather than prescriptions. (Nor are they touchy-feely nonsense removed from the practical world: the concept of "story," for example, is something that every spin doctor understands.) His personal anecdote about the drawing class has immense implications: we view the world (physical and mental) through a fog of preconceptions, and the ability to see what is REALLY there is crucial. I felt that the book wasn't as coherent and focused as his earlier one, but it's thought-provoking and stimulating -- and a good read, too. 4 stars (Richer life ahead) - So what are we mortals, especially those of us in the Western Hemisphere, supposed to do in a world where computers are fast a...

Current Issues and Enduring Questions - A Guide to Critical Thinking and Argument with Readings

1 stars (Terrible Experience!) - The delivery for the book that I bought from this person was too long. I e-mailed the seller saying that I had to return the book back because the class was canceled. Nancy Drew Secrets Can Kill

3 stars ( Nancy Drew Secrets Can Kill ) - This was the 1st Nancy Drew game, and I have played all the games and I know that this is the least challenging of them all. The print-out walkthrough is only 6 pages long compared to 20+ on some. If you're new to Nancy Drew games I recommend getting this one first because it's so easy. 4 stars (Great game!) - I love all Nancy Drew games, but this one is sadly my least favorite. Don't get me wrong, I still loved it! The only reason I'm not giving it 5 starts is because of the graphics (the other Nancy Drew games have real looking people, this had cartoons) and having to change cd roms when going to a new location. That was kind of annoying. But other than those two minor things, it's a great game! 1 stars (YUCK) - I did not like this game at all. It is buggy and the Save and Load area is slow and does not work very well. I also dislike the switching back and forth between DISC 1 and 2. Save your money, this game not worth the money. Buy something else. ...

Optimal Thinking- How to Be Your Best Self

5 stars (A classic) - This book is beyond good or great. It is a handbook for being your best and creating the best results in business and personal life. This is a book about optimal realism (making the most of what is facing you) and clears up all the mumbo jumbo we have been fed about positive and negative thinking. An easy read, the concept is simple and at the same time, infinitely profound. I have purchased this book for my employees and family members. A must read. 1 stars (Don't get the electronic edition!!!!!!) - I have a horror story to tell after downloading this ebook version. They say it is an adobe reader file, but what they don't tell you is that it is encrypted!! What that means, is that Adobe must supply you with a key to read the file. This generally happens automatically (and invisibly) on the computer you download to, unless you happen to try to read the file on another computer (and sign up for an adobe id which I did in order to read the file on the other computer) in which case the key changes and you may not be able to read it on either computer. This is all done through the internet, and you have absolutely no control over it. I am now stuck with an encrypted file that is useless, which I cannot open, cannot read anywhere, and I will have to go and buy the print copy of the book. I tried all the fixes they suggested, but it's like a chicken and egg: the instructions for computer #2 tell you to correct the id on computer #1 first, and vice versa!! And at any rate how am I supposed to hop back and forth between them when these two computers are in different locations (apparently both computers need to be on simultaneously)? And don't bother trying to contact Adobe customer support, for they will tell you that this since this is a "free" product they will have to bill you for technical service - a price that is many times the cost of this ebook. I hope to be able to read this book soon in print, and then post a better review! 5...

This highly addictive game will keep you thinking for hours. The simple object: Prevent the board from filling up completely by aligning balls of the same color into a vertical, horizontal or diagonal row. As you try to line up the colors, more balls will come down to block your path until there is no more room for useful moves. This great-looking game is easy to learn, but hard to master.
