21 Things I Wish My Broker Had Told Me - Practical Advice for New Real Estate Professionals

2 stars (One piece of advice...avoid it - Elizabeth and Jameson Thottam) - This is lousy entry book for Real Estate professionals. Myself and my husband, Jameson Thottam (he used to work with Real Estate firms such as The Loan Page, Homestore and IndyMac Bank), have been dabbling in residential real estate and we found this book a horrible start in terms of teaching the core secrets (i.e., valuation, SEC II stat techniques, tax implications and flippying and insider trading tips of how to find/negotiate the best properties). Trust us, Elizabeth and Jameson Thottam....we've been in the business for the last two years now and would not recommend this book. -The Thottam family 5 stars (Great for Newbies) - This book is a great way for new agents to know what they are getting into. The book covers a multitude of issues that people outside of the industry don't know about including what to expect (and what not to) from your broker. There's very little detail in the book, but it's a great overview and, quite frankly, you'd be hard pressed to get all of the information about real estate into 10 books, much less one. This is a terrific book for setting your expectations in a realistic place. It covers everything from planning your career change to how to hold an open house. I'd highly recommend it for new agents just getting started or for anyone thinking about getting started in the industry. I offer it as a suggestion to all the new agents I train. 4 stars (Very Good Book for New Licensees) - I am just got my license, and I can tell you, alot of the 'how to be successful in real estate in your first year' and from the various seminars I have attended, they all basically say the same thing - Market yourself, prepare for the rough patches, work, work, work to see results. Nothing really earth shattering or inspiring. But I liked this book because of it's honesty. Alot of what you hear and read in other books, on how to market your self and get leads - this b...

To Be Told - Know Your Story- Shape Your Future

5 stars (Highly recommended!!) - Dan Allender in his book, "To Be Told" presents both the tools and the inspiration for each of us to understand the stories that God has written in our lives. By understanding the story that God has written in the past, he contends that it will help us to understand the direction that God would have us to take for the future. Allender does a great job in this book of presenting a method for understanding the difficulties of our past. His sharing of his own difficult background shows that he personally knows of that which he speaks. And since he keeps it simple it is accessible to anyone. One area that I wish Allender had done a better job of was to broaden the application of understanding our stories. Although dealing with the past and understanding the direction for the future are both important applications, I think that there may be a whole host of others. However, that small difference aside, Allender's book is well-written and includes powerful practical ideas on how to understand how God is writing your life. I highly recommend it and the accompanying workbook. (...) 5 stars (A Story Worth Reading) - The idea of life as a story is not some recent fad. Rather, God tells His eternal story in story form--the narrative of the Bible. Nor is the idea that we should listen to our own story some post-modern invention. Augustine insisted that there were only two things worth knowing--God and self. Calvin taught that all knowledge can be summarized by knowledge of God and knowledge of self. With this historical backdrop, Allender becomes your guide on a journey into your own story and how to discover God's sometime hidden, often perplexing trail as you travel with Him. As Allender puts it, "God is not only your Authority, He is also your Author." That is, He is both Sovereign and Shepherd. He is over you seeing your whole path, yet also beside you blazing the path with you. Since these concepts are not novel, Allender provides w...

Arnaud- the Boy Who Wouldn-t Do What He Was Told

Arnaud follows his own path and does what he wants. This does not endear him to the grownups in his life, which doesn't seem to bother Arnaud at all. Where will his disobedience lead? The Greatest Baseball Stories Ever Told

5 stars (Every Chapter A True Joy) - I don't know if these are truly the greatest baseball stories ever told, but they are certainly entertaining. I am a baseball fan, but I'm not especially learned in baseball history. These stories, all by a different author, have deepened my love for the game and engendered appreciation for the men who play the game, past and present. I admit up front that I am a die-hard Dodger fan. The chapter by Vin Scully on Sandy Kofa'xs perfect game gave me goose bumps. I learned my love of baseball from my father, so the chapter by Doris Kearns Goodwin was especially meaningful (brought tears to my eyes). She tells how her father taught her to keep a score book for the Brooklyn Dodger games, then relay to him, play by play the entire game when he came home from work. She tells how, when the score was close toward the end of a game, she had to ask her mother to take notes while she left the room because the anxiety was just too much to bear. I, too, have had to do this. Of course, the first chapter with Abbott and Costello's "Who's On First" is a classic whether you are a baseball fan or not. I enjoyed every page of this book and plan to pass it along to grandkids who also love the game of baseball. 5 stars (The Title Says It All) - The baseball stories that make up this book make it possible to call this book the the Greatest Baseball Stories Ever Told. These stories have appeared in years past in the three Fireside books of baseball that are currently out of print. Since they are no longer available it would be advisable for you to strike while the iron is hot and buy this book. The book contains both fiction and non-fiction and certainly doesn't cover all the great stories that the Fireside books contain, but you can't argue with the thirty that make up this book. I would especially recommend this book for youngsters interested in baseball literature who weren't around to enjoy the Fireside books. 5 stars (An instant Hall o...
