What Men Live By and Other Tales

Quote, "And Simon and Matryona understood who it was that had lived with them, and whom they had clothed and fed. And they wept with awe and with joy. And the angel said: "I was alone in the field, naked. I had never known human needs, cold and hunger, till I became a man. I was famished, frozen, and did not know what to do. I saw, near the field I was in, a shrine built for God, and I went to it hoping to find shelter...

Quote, "Prophecy may vary between being an intellectual amusement and a serious occupation; serious not only in its intentions, but in its consequences. The Purpose-Driven Life- What on Earth Am I Here For-

2 stars (Nothing New Here) - I had heard people speak of this book and saw the author on the news so I figured it was worth reading. Unfortunatley there is very little that is new here wich has already been said by others. I personally don't agree with a bit of Mr Warrens conclusions and statements about what God's purpose for us is. In my opinion if you want to know What God's purpose for us is, read Neale Donald Walsch's books "Conversations With God" series and the others he has written. These books have changed my life and how I view God. They give many more answers wich are true to me than does "The Purpose Driven Life". But I will also say that if this book helps you,I am happy for you and Thank God. 5 stars (Live life with a purpose!) - The book is extremely well structured. Plenty of material to read and reflect upon. I recommend as a 'must read' and 'act upon'. Personally, will read this book once again in 6 months. 5 stars (The Purpose Driven Life) - A book that will lead you straight to God. Second only to The Holy Bible. EXCELLENT reading for ALL Christians! ...

Radical Evolution - The Promise and Peril of Enhancing Our Minds- Our Bodies -- and What It Means to

5 stars ("Enhanced Humans": Never Sleep and They Have Artificial Vision.) - Nanotechnology, communication technology, information technology, robotics, drugs, biology, and genetics all come together in this new book. I had a quick read and heard the author talk at some length on the radio about the book and the subject. From the book and from listening to the author, one is convinced that this is a solid effort. The book gives an overview of new technologies and drugs. The drugs are not your normal medications. They do things such as extend memory. The technologies can give us things such as artificial hearing and artificial sight. He describes how we can use electronic sensors in the brain to control robotics to help the handicapped move limbs. In the past we might have thought that some of these drugs and technologies would be radical, or far off in the distant future, but now many of the technologies are here. The author is an editor and a reporter at the Washington Post. He has published a number of articles and books including Edge City: Life on the New Frontier and The Nine Nations of North America. The book is entertaining, and the story and writing are probably better than if written by a scientist. In his radio interview, he said that he had travelled extensively to prepare for the book, absorbing new ideas and technologies being tested by drug companies, various universities, government agencies, and in other private industry. According to the author, the products of that research are here or are coming soon. Part of his challenge was to write a book that brings the reader up to date without sounding too crazy, or too techie, or too far out. If he just presents a lot of "gee whiz" chit chat, the reader will be turned off. After all, he is a Post writer, not a hack gadget salesman. So, he has attempted to explain the social impact as he goes through the book. Also, he does not want to give the impression that it is science fiction that we have here. It i...

Bullying at School- What We Know and What We Can Do Understanding Children-s Worlds

4 stars (Good data but needs more specific examples) - I was elected to my local board of education and we recently received a credible complaint from a parent that harassment of her son was being overlooked by school administrators. Accordingly, I felt obliged to read up on the issue of bullying. This book sets forth both the problem and the recommended solutions. Prof. Olweus is Norwegian and his studies primarily involve Scandinavian schools. Accordingly, questions came to my mind such as "Is Norway a more homogenious society than the United States? If so, are there any differences in both the problem and the solutions in a more ethnically heterogeneous society?" I don't know the answers but, the reader should keep these issues in mind when reading this book. Prof. Olweus describes the problem and he sets forth well organized solutions to the problem which require involvement of teachers, administrators and parents, and further require communication with all students, even those who are neither bullies nor victims. The one problem I have with the book is that there are very few case histories and specific examples given. The book proposes solutions but does not provide a case history in which the specific solution was successfully applied to the problem at hand. Reliable data and sound recommendations are important but a few specific examples of how these recommendations worked would be helpful. For example, Olweus recommends that parents of a bully apply sanctions if the bullying behavior does not improve. He states, "The consequence should be associated with some degree of discomfort or unpleasantness, but corporal punishment must not be used." OK, fine; but what are specific examples of "discomfor or unpleasantness?" Where are the case histories giving examples? Without these, the book does not provide as fulfilling reading as it otherwise might. This book is well worth reading and I recommend it with the reservations expressed above. 5 stars (This book is the...

4 stars (Insightful...) - A good resource to improve communication skills and train yourself to be ready to participate in difficult conversations and avoid delaying them. Helped me to face conflict head-on. I would definitely recommend it to everyone! 5 stars (Not Just a Guru Book) - Filled with diverse and accessible examples, this book provides a use framework for dealing with many of life's most awkward moments. 5 stars (Read This Book!) - I couldn't recommend this book more highly. The E-Myth Revisited- Why Most Small Businesses Don-t Work and What to Do About It

4 stars (Read this book and start thinking) - Great book to get you thinking about your current small business or one that you are planning. This book takes you through the three types of people : technican, entrepreneur, and manager. Guess what you have to be all three and in good balance. Gerber then discusses how to apply the thinking behind a franchise to your own small business even if you have no intention of ever franchising it. He helps you think about your business from a systems point of view. Gerber spends the rest of the book talking about the business development process, which includes your primary aim, marketing strategy, systems strategy, people strategy, management strategy, etc. I have run a small consulting business for 5 years and I wish had read this book years ago. Oh well, never too late to get on track. 5 stars (Don't Own A Business Without It) - Michael Gerber is the best thing that ever happened to the small business owners of this world. Reading this book changed the way I thought about business. Today I am a marketing coach for professional service firms and small service business owners. One of the first books I recommend they devour is The E-Myth. Actually, I recommend everything Gerber has written. 4 stars (It was as if M Gerber had been watching me) - A great, easy to read book with powerful principles told in an acessible manner. Sometimes it was like Michael Gerber had been watching me at work and written the story of my Business - scary. A must read for those struggling with developing a small to medium sized business. ...

What to Expect the First Year- Second Edition

5 stars (Good Read & Indsepensible) - I can't say how many times this book has come in handy. I am in the military stationed far from Mom and the rest of my family. It certainly saved on my long distance! 5 stars (Review by first time mom!) - I found this book to be especially useful in the first few months of my baby's birth. From my exprience these first few months can be quite daunting simply becasue everything is so new. The slightest thing is cause for concern and there were questions all the time. This book provided me answers to all of them. Like the sudden crying bouts in the evening which may not necessarily be attributed to colic (i knew this after reading the entire section on colic - which was an eye opener!) or the spit ups and what to make of them based on their texture. My daughter had blood in her [...] and her [...] were engorged after birth. Of course I thought the worst! The book explained why and that it was perfectly normal. Boy was I relieved! One night I awoke to find my 2 1/2 month old baby with a stuffed nose and having a hard time breathing. There were some excellent home remedies recommended in this book for such a situation. Of course at the the time I simply called my doctor. But I later found that the same solution offered by my doctor was in the home remedy section of the book. I promptly read all the home remedies suggested. There is also a wonderful section on breastfeeding, expressing milk, what kind of pump to buy etc. Baby's grandparents really wanted me to feed her water in case she was dehydrated. I needed only to refer them to the relevant page which tells you why it needen't be given. I found the bits on how to tell if baby is getting enough breastmilk to be most useful too. You can never tell especially if you're feeding on demand. Just to highlight how comprehensive this book is, it also had some great advice on how to deal with baby's well meaning but overbearing grandparents. There is also other basic information...

What-s So Amazing About Grace-

3 stars (Not bad, but way below my expectations) - I think one of the most important subjects in christian theology is Grace. After reading the book by Erwin Lutzer titled ''How you can be sure you will spend eternity with God'' (one of my favourite books on that subject), i decided i need to give more time reading and studying about Grace. That's how i stumbled upon Whats so Amazing about Grace. Reading a fairly good reviews about it, i was so anxious to get it. But alas, i was very disappointed. The book has some excellent chapters and ideas for sure, but all in all, i am afraid its a boring book and doesnt present any new insight on Grace. Some ideas are very redundant and repeated over many chapters. The author uses very very limited bible referencing and you feel as if the author isnt bothering with scripture, and speaks more from a ''social'' point of view. I agree with another reviewer when he said 'Grace got lost in the way' as Yancey doesnt speak about the real Grace (God towards man) but more like grace as in man towards man. At the end of the day, i didn't learn anything new on Grace and was more or less bored. This book is ''ok'' but nothing more. I would give it 2.5 over 5. 2 stars (Grace gets lost in the mix) - I have read and reviewed The Jesus I Never Knew and Rumors of Another World by Yancey and loved them both...See reviews on those pages. However, I was completely disappointed with this book. There are few pages on which Yancey does not accuse and condemn the church for various imperfections. He uses several stories to show how the church lacks grace. Several of these include non-Christians accusing Christians of lacking grace. Yancey seems to side with any who condemn Christians for what they deem as "ungrace." One example is an addicted mother of a 2 yr old girl who has prostituted the girl for drug money. She states she did not go to a church because they would make her feel bad. This story opens the book and is referred to several t...

Public Health- Third Edition - What It Is and How It Works

1 stars (Inaccurate and vapid) - If you've ever had any actual experience in public health, you will probably recognize this book for the sham it really is. Public health systems in the real world just don't behave in the idealized way that Turnock describes. Moreover, Turnock is far too uncritical of HMOs, which consitently fail to provide actual assitance (not just theoretical assistance) to patients who need it. There is also no understanding at all here about the ways in which class differences affect dstribution of health care coverage, or any discussion of what we might be able to do about it. The reader is left with a blinkered and rather utopian model of our current public health system - one that glosses over existing problems and presents only the most simplistic assessments. You might learn something if you're just beginning your public health studies, but for the rest of us, this book just isn't worth its exorbitant price tag. 5 stars (Wow...) - Boy, I'm surprised at the reaction the book is getting! I have this book, and it's really quite good - I'm an MS-Epidemiology candidate, and it's really helped me with the fundamentals of the field. Incidentally, in response to the implication that Dr. Turnock is less than qualified to put forth an effort such as this, you might want to investigate that, you can find his impressive accompishments at the school's website. Board certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and former director of the IDPH, to name a few? Sounds qualified to me. I'd recommend this book to any PH student or someone looking to learn the basics...I don't hesitate to rank this right up there with Gordis. Cheers! 4 stars (Good guide to understanding Public Health) - This book really tells us what the Public Health is and how it works, as the title suggests. Even though data or statistics cited are somewhat outdated, you can understand the fundamental meaning of PH. ...

Behavior Modification- What It Is and How to Do It 7th Edition

3 stars (Easy to use, but terribly REDUNDANT!) - As a psychology student, I encounted this book in a behavioral modification course. I was not overly impressed by it, but it does have it's usefulness. For anyone interested in behavior modification, or behavior therapy - whether as an educator, clinician, or even a parent (who might be wondering why their child doesn't seem to be responding to certain "punishment" perhaps?) - this text is written and laid out in a very simple, easily accessible format. Case studies or examples are provided to illustrate the application of new concepts, and most of them are very well chosen. Regardless of prior education on the subject, most individuals will be able to understand it and gain new knowlege that they can apply in the real world. HOWEVER. The chapters, while short, are at times very repetitive - it becomes very hard to follow (motivationally) when you find yourself reading the same concept five times. The book can also seem very dry, and it makes it very tempting to skip over entire sections just to find something more engaging or interesting. Although this book is very easily read and understood - potential readers need to be warned (and actually are in the beginning) that finishing this text will not dramatically increase their ability to change other people, and that any behavioral modification procedures should be used with extreme caution - many behavioral problems result from behavioral modification that was improperly designed or administered! My last word of caution would be that although the majority of these techniques will work in nearly all cases, there will be some cases in which, due to context or individual factors, they will not. Be sure to read it while keeping an open mind to considering practicality and ethical applicability. 5 stars (Textbook, But Not) - I used this book as a special education undergraduate. I found it contained all of the essential information in a format that was not bogged ...

Bad Girls of the Bible and What We Can Learn from Them

5 stars (Bad Girls of the Bible: And What We Can Learn from Them ) - This is a must for every woman with or without a past. It allows one to look deep within and see the woman that was or is and the hope of a new life with and in Christ Jesus. It has wonderful insights into your relationships with others and more importantly with our husbands. How often we are quick to blame them when it just might be our problem and not their fault. I found this book spiritual, insightful and humorous. I encourage every woman to give it a look see. 5 stars (Bad Girls of the Bible) - My Sunday School Class is using it as their Bible Study, and think it is well done. Better so far for younger women, but I have read ahead and it will get better for the older woman. 1 stars (Misogynistic, Narrow minded, Simplistic ) - I read more than 30 pages of this book only because my book group chose it. The author begins by saying that her husband (an Old Testament scholar) read (imply vetted) and corrected it for her. Help me! She believes herself too ignorant and dependent to even write her own book. She takes a very narrow view of biblical stories, reinforcing male dominated interpretations. This is "born-again" drivel. I, for one, think of Eve as the first heroic scientist. I hope she grabbed that fruit, relished the knowledge (even if it was unflattering knowledge) it brought her, and later reflected that while it was hard won, what she had learned was worth it. (If I am unknowingly naked, please let me find out!) Life is more difficult when we do not live in ignorance and denial - but, oh, how rich, thought provoking, and exciting it is when we embrace unflattering truths about ourselves, others and the world we live in. The author appears to caution us against taking risks, thinking for ourselves, asking for what we want and challenging authority. If you are over the age of 20, you know enough about the complexities of life to find this book one-dimensional. ...

What to Expect When You-re Expecting- Third Edition

5 stars (For Women) - My husband wans't very interested in this particular book because he said "he already knew everything he needs to know". I think I should have bought a more fairytale type book as I think it makes him nervous to hear about anything that can go wrong with his first baby! 5 stars (Wonderful for first time moms-to-be!) - This is an excellent reference for first time moms-to-be, chock full of scientific explanations and situational questions that cover all the bases. And it is the only book my OB recommended! 5 stars (The Mommy Bible) - This is a WONDERFUL book! My husband got it for me with our first baby, and what a life saver it was. I brought it with me wherever I went. Anytime I felt anything strange, I would look it up in this book and there was my answer. Now we are expecting our second baby and I'm using it again. It's a great book for rookie parents or experienced ones. I highley recommend it. It's also great if the hubbies read it, they get to know what we are going through better and can help us along the way. ...

For Women Only - What You Need to Know About the Inner Lives of Men

5 stars (An Answer to Our Prayer of S.O.S.) - My soon-to-be-husband and I try to live as closely to His will and word as we can, but even so, disagreements had been tearing us apart recently. Even as we approach the doorstep of marriage, we'd begun to have doubts because of the frequent misunderstandings. He heard a radio spot on a Christian station talking about the book and, in a desperate attempt to mend our relationship, he mentioned it to me. I was just as frustrated as he was, so I bought it the next day. I read the whole book in about 3 hours. It was an easy read and, for someone so anxious to make things better, I couldn't put it down. He was at work when I read it in its entirity, but last night was eye-opening and awe-inspiring. Ladies, I highly recommend making a list of questions to ask your significant other/husband while reading. So many things occurred to me, even things like, "Do you really see it this way?" or, "Is this really how you feel when I say/do ____?" We assume that men are all simpletons, and they play the role rather convincingly sometimes, but this book gives great insight. Because of simple changes in wording, I was able to understand quite a few things about him that I thought I knew (but didn't get) before. The conversation we had based on the questions I wrote ironed out SO many things that had been plaguing us for several MONTHS; we haven't been this happy since the few spark-filled days after we first met. Finally, I must add something I found very helpful from this book. For longer than I've known my husband-to-be, I've struggled with depression. He's often encouraged me (in a concerned way, not a degrading one) to do things like lose weight or be active or have a more active social/spiritual life. I took these things to be insults, which only deepened my hole of worthlessness and low self-esteem. When we talked about the sections of the book that cover things like why they look at other women and what it means f...
