Crisis Preparedness Handbook- A Complete Guide to Home Storage and Physical Survival

5 stars (Crisis Preparedness Handbook: A Complete Guide to Home Storage and Physical Survival) - Great book. I really don't see how one could be any better on this subject. The author has a very organized mind, has done his homework, and gives very specific recommendations that are practical and easy for anybody to follow. No wasted space or filler in this book. It's really a reference manual that you'll end up underlining and refering back to again and again. I highly recommend it. 5 stars (a great resource) - This is a great book for anyone interested in surviving any disaster. There is no telling what the future may hold, but this book is a good start in any survival library. 5 stars (One of the best out there.) - This book is well though out, organized in a simple and logical manner, and gives you plenty of information to design your own plan for a crisis of any kind. Unlike other books that just offer a bunch of check lists and "buy what I tell you" recommendation, this book allows you to make your own decisions of what you will and will not need to stock for a crisis. Additionally, much of this can be done on a budget, much of what you would need are your usual grocery items, in canned form. This is a huge savings over many of the dehyrated and freeze dried options normally presented in survival literature. Overall, if you are looking for a book to use as a basis for which to begin planning for a crisis, this is it. ...

Weight Watchers New Complete Cookbook

4 stars ( Weight Watchers New Complete Cookbook ) - The recipes are great...I have used this book already and have been pleased 4 stars (This is a great cookbook for everyone!) - A cookbook full of healthy, great tasting recipes that everyone can enjoy. There is a variety of recipes so you are sure to find something that everyone can enjoy! 3 stars (Serving Size Please) - This book has easy to read instructions with helpful tips and suggestions. I love the recipes I have tried, but I do have 2 complaints. Some of the ingredients are difficult to find especially in the small town where I live and the recipes state how many servings but leave it up to me to fighure out the serving size. This makes it too easy to make mistakes. Other than that I love the book and all of the additional information that it provides. ...

America-s Test Kitchen Live-- The All-New Companion to America-s Favorite Public Television Cooking

5 stars (Excellent book but could use a better index) - This book is OUTSTANDING. America's Test Kitchen is like the Consumer Report's of recipes and cooking products. I enjoy learning WHY certain products and techniques work. They try and try until they get a particular recipe to be the best it can be. Then they share what they learned. The one disappointing aspect of this book is the Table of Contents and indexes. For example each "chapter" contains several recipes, but you have to go to the chapter in order to see what all the recipes are within that chapter. But the book is so very excellent that I can forgive this flaw. 5 stars (But use your own judgment) - I absolutely love ATK and buy all of their books. The techniques they present are top notch and as close to bulletproof as you can get. I find the spicing a little mild for my tastes so I usually amp that up a bit. Tasting results are the aggregated opinion of several people so some of the more unusual flavors you might get a kick out of may be rounded out in the math. 4 stars (An Excellent Companion to The PBS Series.) - America's Test Kitchen Live is up to the franchise's usual standards. If you are a fan of the PBS series you will want these faithfully produced scripts for the TV version. The recipes are well perfected to make sure the home chef can produce consistent mouth watering results for family and friends. If you have ever tweaked a recipe until you got it just right, you will love the approach of Chris Kimball and company. They save the home cooking enthusiast a lot of time and energy by doing the tweaking for them. The products tested in this volume range from infomercial gadgets to common necessary kitchen tools used under a range of conditions. The pretty well detailed test results not only offer the best and worst culinary utensils in any category but a lot of the near misses along with their costs. In many ways the text version of these product exams are better than their vide...

Get Togethers - Rachel Ray 30-Minute Meals

1 stars (ALL of her books share the same major fault....) - Don't get me wrong, I love her shows, it is great to see how she pulls it all together in the 30 minutes without seeming rushed. The recipes, for the most part, are pretty healthy and have good variety. The lack of pictures doesn't bother me, as she's not really into foo-foo presentation with raspberry sauce swirled half-a-mile away on the edge of the dessert plate, imho totally wasting perfectly good raspberry sauce.... However, her books are *not* written to really go with the flow of her show, as in total meals being prepared at the same time. The recipes, while grouped together as a menu, are all written separately, just like in other cookbooks. So, if you're looking to see what you should be doing *while* the water is boiling or something else is cooking, you're not going to get any help from her books, which is disappointing. Believe it or not, it takes organization and good time management skills to get everything on the table hot (or cold, as the case may be) at the same time. Her shows do an excellent job of this--the books do not. She needs to look at redoing her books in both formats--recipes all being prepared at the same time to match her show, as well as the more conventional way if you want to mix and match. Then I would buy them. In the meantime, watch the shows and take notes to get the process down, then get the books from the library or used from Amazon. 4 stars (HOW ABOUT 30 MEALS IN 15 MINUTES?) - She's done it again...another book, with recipes simple enough for your lazy teenage son to cook, but Rachel, Rachel...more pix please! Some of us need more stimulation than others. I enjoy Rachels cooking show and her previous books, but the recipes are just too good to pass off as my own, so reluctantly, I'll have to give her credit. 2 stars (Mixed satisfaction with recipes) - Yes, these recipes can be finished in 30 mins when you are somewhat organised in your kitchen. Yes, recipes ...

Rachael Ray-s 30-Minute Get Real Meals - Eat Healthy Without Going to Extremes

5 stars (Love It, Love It, Love It!!!!!) - This cookbook, is in my opinion Rachel Ray's best one yet. It's creative, original and very tasty. Never boring. It suits all my cooking/diet phases from low cal to low carb and everything in between. The best part about her recipes is that they are easy to tweak if you should come across an ingredient that you don't much care for without losing the flavor of the dish. I love the stuffed tomatoes! I bought this book as a birthday gift for my sister and almost couldn't give it to her, I did, and I went back to the store the next day and bought it for myself. Some opinions are just evil and nasty. Some can't tolerate watching Rachel's show and that's okay, the show is probably geared towards viewers who don't have a stick up their ... anyway. Great book and even greater gift! My sister loved it too! 5 stars (Rachel Rays cook book) - It arrived on time & in great condition. Great product, very pleased. 1 stars (At least you don't have to listen to her) - Sounds like of a "Catty" title, but I'm sorry. Some of her recepies are good, but no real nutritional values are listed, especially for being touted healthy and fast meals. I'm sure Ms. Ray has a devoted following, but after trying to watch her shows on Food Network, I find it better to read a recepie, than trying to listen to her. With her gravelly-rough cigarette voice, I find it hard to concentrate on her talking. On television she comes accross as White Trash, Redneck cooking. Does she have any cooking school behind her, or is her entire repetoire' just throw this together and your friends will find it "cool". Anyhow if you like Mizz Ray you will probably like this book, and spare your ears at the same time. Me I actually prefer, Giada De Laurentiis, and Sandra Lee. Both these ladies are classy, award winning chefs, and have actual nutritional value to their recepies. ...

Wine for Dummies

5 stars (A very good start) - He very good start if you want to know more about wine. A must for everyone who loves wine and wants to have a clear overview 5 stars (Gets One Into & Clarifies A Difficult Topic) - Wine is complex with all its grapes and regions and producers. This book helps to simplify and compartmentalize much of this complexity into useable, workable info. Start with grape types and clear away the snobbish smoke of much of the vino knowledge, this book delves into wine lists when dining and labels when purchasing. Extremely useful are chapters are serving and storing and collecting from major wine areas. Least useful part which could use more is pairing with food. One might benefit also from reading Andrea Immer's books which to this reader clarify and provide food pairing info in superb style and manner. 5 stars (Good Intro without the Snobbery) - There may be more in-depth wine books out there, and there are certainly more academic books out there on the subject, but most of them scare the average reader with their pages of pomposity and attitudes so high and mighty that they induce nosebleeds. But finally there's a wine book for amateur wine enthusiasts who don't have a wine cave handy or a budget to road trip the Napa Valley or Bordeaux. The books takes the reader from the very basics of wine, its history, and all the terms used in wine making and wine tasting. What's particularly helpful is how the book is divides wine into geographic chapters so the reader can get the feel for the region, which helps immensely when differentiating the specific wine types. What's also quite nice is the humorous, down-to-earth attitude of its authors, who see wine as something to be enjoyed by all, not just an elite few, and, in fact, the book is peppered with "Snob Alerts" to warn readers of particular wine trivia that the nosebleed, blue-blood types like to toss about. The book does need some updating, especially with the pricing and vintage i...

Barefoot Contessa Family Style- Easy Ideas and Recipes That Make Everyone Feel Like Family

5 stars (Some of Ina's Best Work) - This publication includes some of the best Barefoot recipes. Lots of wonderful images(but not TOO many)that are very colorful and well presented. I am very pleased with this purchase. 5 stars (Like having Mom in the kitchen with you) - Great recipes and advice on every page...I especially appreciated the "10 items you need in your kitchen". She also offers brand names to use when she feels it will make a difference in the outcome of the recipe. 5 stars (AMAZING!!) - Love, Love, Love this book. The Encyclopedia of Country Living- An Old Fashioned Recipe Book

2 stars (good gift) - I bought this for myself, but would not do again. A much to large tome, very confusing at times and boring. Maybe for a serious farmer it MIGHT be interesting, but for the average consumer it is to dry and boring. I find myself using it as a reference on a rare occasion for some recipe related item, but mostly collecting dust. Might be donated to the local public book source soon, not worth the shelf space in my opinion. Spend your precious cash elsewhere. 5 stars (Country life) - Great information for anyone wanting to get back to the basics, Carla has mastered the country life, mixed with family, experience and farmlife passion. 5 stars (Something for everyone) - Ignore the title....this is a must-have for every home. Ms. Emery doesn't just tell you how to live off the land or live simply. She gives cooking/canning info, gardening advice, how to select-care-for-butcher livestock, care for the sick, housekeeping advice, even how to deliver a baby. This book has useful advice for every homemaker as well as "doomers" who want to prep for complete self-sufficiency and people who want to go back to a simpler lifestyle. ...

The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook

5 stars (I found another elegant cookbook that makes the best wedding present!) - I am an avid, but amateur chef and am getting married in Fall 05. I've been given a bunch of cookbooks. My favorite show on Food TV is the Barefoot Contessa . . . but my favorite cookbook so far, hands down, is called NOT ON LOVE ALONE by Jessie Carry Saunders. It has a friendly, intimate tone, and it feels like something written by a young woman for other young couples. Just like Ina Garten, the recipes are elegant and delicious without ever feeling fussy. It has a friendly, appealing feel, like the author is in the kitchen with you, telling you stories about the recipes as she teaches you how to make them. Also, it's a super-high quality book -- it's a hard cover, the pages are nice and thick, and the watercolor illustrations on every page make the book seem like something you could display on your coffee table as easily as you could use it in the kitchen. Like I said, I love the Barefoot Contessa, but if you want a similar style cookbook by a pretty young chef, my recommendation is NOT ON LOVE ALONE. Trust me, you will be so happy with it! 4 stars (Definitely Worth Getting) - If you love Ina's Barefoot Contessa show on Food Network you will absolutely love this cookbook. The recipes are not intimidating, rather they are concise, elegant and delicious. Definitely want to get the rest of her books. Hope this review was helpful. 5 stars (Delicious recipes, great pictures, sensible ideas) - What a great combination of tips for entertaining, great recipes, and beautiful photos that help you visualize your results! I bought this book because of its approach of doing 95% of the food prep ahead of time so the host is free to spend time with the guests. I was planning a finger-food party and didn't want to spend the whole time in the kitchen. I tried many of the recipes along with some of my stand-bys. The food turned out great, and thanks to Ina's tips about how to arrange platte...

Cover and Bake With Free Issue of Cook-s Illustrated

5 stars (great cookbook!!) - Another great book by Cook's Illustrated! I love their cookbooks, and their magazine. What I like is that they not only give you a tried and true recipe, they give you their test kitchen results on other variations they tried. And give their reasons for either rejecting or choosing a technique, ingredient or utensil. If you are a cook who likes to know the science behind cooking, you will never be dissapointed by any of their books. I have 3 from them. I rank their books right up there with Joy of cooking and Julia Child for the content and education they offer both the experienced and beginner. I liked this book so much I gave it to my brother for his birthday and he loved it. (For purely selfish reasons, every time I give him a cookbook he makes a meal from it and invites me for dinner.) 5 stars (Comfort food at its best) - I love this book! Delicious one-dish meals, casseroles, slow cooker recipes, etc., without one can of "cream of whatever" soup. The analysis of what they tried along the way to develop the best recipes is interesting too. I only wish the recipes were a little less involved and took less time to execute, but I do appreciate quality over speed. 5 stars (Great Format!) - If you love the magazine, "Cook's Illustrated" but don't know how to organize the recipes (photocopy/cut-and-paste onto 4x6" cards? tear out your favorites and keep in a binder? keep all the issues and try to remember which had what?), then this book is for you. The recipes, the background, the tips -- they're all here in an organized, workable format. Hooray! ...
