Youth

Quote, "We were a week working up as far as Yarmouth Roads, and then we got into a gale--the famous October gale of twenty-two years ago. It was wind, lightning, sleet, snow, and a terrific sea. We were flying light, and you may imagine how bad it was when I tell you we had smashed bulwarks and a flooded deck. On the second night she shifted her ballast into the lee bow, and by that time we had been blown off somewhere on the Dogger Bank...

104 Activities That Build- Self-esteem- Teamwork- Communication- Anger Management- Self-discovery- a

5 stars (Great activities) - This book has great activities with great debriefs. The book is written in a simple to use style with clear directives on how to conduct each activity. The activities are easily modified to fit different age groups and teaching points. As a trainer/educator I enjoyed using the activities and am glad to have this book in my bag of tricks. 3 stars (Beware the duplication from her other book!) - I got this book becuase I liked JOnes' other book Team-building activities for Every Group. I was so disapointe to find a dozen or more of the activities exact duplicates of ones from the other book. Word-for-word. Other activiites in this book are good, just didnt like the covert deception that i was getting 104 activities when i already had purchased some of the once! 4 stars (teaching children) - My son's teacher works with this book in her classroom and I find it has been helpful in helping him learn to manage his anger. All children today should be introduced to all of the skills mentioned in Alanna Jones book. Self-esteem, communication, coping skills are vital to raising a peaceful generation of children. My son's teacher has also introduced lessons on stress-management and self-esteem with "The Children's Awareness Curriculum." I encourage schools and teachers to continue on this path of helping our children. ...

The Catholic Faith Handbook for Youth

5 stars (A basic guidebook concerning all things Catholic) - The Catholic Faith Handbook For Youth is a basic guidebook concerning all things Catholic. Intended for young adults, yet accessible to anyone who may be fuzzy on the details of Catholicism, The Catholic Faith Handbook For Youth covers creed, sacraments, morality, and prayer, along with articles concerning information on current events from a Catholic point of view, advice for prayer, profiles of thirty-seven Catholic saints, notes on the history of the Catholic Church, and more. Full-color illustrations pepper this highly readible introduction to a spiritual way of life. Especially recommended reading to share with one's preteen and teenage children in order to teach them more about Catholicism and what it means to live one's life by Catholic religious principles. ...

The Money Book for the Young- Fabulous - Broke

5 stars (Excellent Book!) - Have briefly watched Suze Orman's TV show several times, and couldn't stand it. This book, however, is outstanding. She has compiled a wealth of information (including various important government loan program details) for those just starting out after college. I wish it had been available for me just after I graduated! Topics included are an explanation of one's FICO score and what to do about it, strategies upon beginning a job, buying a car, buying a home, retirement funds, and handling student loan repayments. I think the only thing Suze missed was how to get the MOST reliable new or used car - look in Consumer Reports. (She did, however, encourage getting a used car certified by the manufacturer - excellent advice.) Am so impressed I'm going to find one of her other books that targets people in my life-stage 5 stars (A must have for the Young, Fabulous, and Broke) - Suze Orman is spectacular. She doesn't sugarcoat things and she puts it all out there for us young folk. She covers all the topics that affect those fresh out of college. Everything from handling student loan and credit card debt to buying your first house and handling investments. And the online tools that you get access to when you purchase the book are great help as well. there's even a message board where you can get real feedback from Suze and her assistants. This is definitely a must read for all young people! 2 stars (Good advice, I guess....) - Suze Ormon's advice is important to pay attention to, but in my opinion it's possible to get elswhere in a better package. If you like Suze's presentation, fine, but she just seems overly chirpy to me. She's FAR better IMHO than Mr. Kiyosaki of the two Dads, or real estate promoter Robert Allen, for instance, but my taste runs more to the Dolans, Jane Bryant Quinn, or Andrew Tobias....or Benjamin Graham, though he's far less entertaining. Don't spend all you make! Pay yourself first! Hey, maybe I should write a ...

The Last Shot - City Streets- Basketball Dreams

5 stars (For Any One Who Truly Cares) - This book was the best written and best depicted book I have ever read. From the beginning it was raw and real. For any one who truly cares about and loves basketball this is a must read. This is as raw and real as it gets in the basketball world. 5 stars (Four inner city kids looking for a way out) - This is probably the best book i have ever read. What it lacked in description in made up for in plot. I never wanted to put this book down! I was amazed at some of the hardships these kids go to, and reading this book can really onpen ones mind. You will be truly inspired and facisinated as i recommend this book to even people with little interest in basketball. I also must say that Stephon Marbury was not a character that was portayed with detail in this book, and you were not overly intersted to know what would become of him. 4 stars (Good story, could have been a great book with better writing) - I found this to be an interesting story and a pretty good book. I thought the descriptions of the coaches' recruiting antics were very enlightening and well written. Being able to use some of the real names, particularly very well known ones such as Stephon Marbury and Jim Boeheim, added a lot to the credibility of the book. Where I found this work to be lacking was in the descriptive writing. Really good writers construct word pictures that are vivid and allow the reader to better experience the story being told. I didn't find the writing quality in this book that would have made me rate it a 5 star effort. This author's style seemed to me to be more like a newspaper reporter's - limited to a fixed amount of space and more focused on the basics than the aesthetics. Outstanding books also need to deliver the aesthetics in the form of well painted word pictures. I wish this book had been stronger in that area. ...

Coaching Youth Soccer- A Baffled Parent-s Guide

5 stars (extremely helpful) - I am coaching my daughter's U-8 AYSO soccer team this season and was in desperate need of an easy overview of rules as well as age and skill appropriate drills for practices. This book was very helpful and I am using it as a resource. 5 stars (Very Good Beginners Book) - This is a very good book for the beginner coach or parent who wants to work with their child. I bought this to learn the basics of soccer and work with my 4.5 year old. I knew nothing of the sport and this book was a great resource for me. Plus, it has tons of great games to make practice fun on top of learning the skills. 5 stars (Coaching Bible!) - This should be mandatory reading for ALL youth team coaches, at all levels! This is the BIBLE for coaches...and many other youth sport coaches would gain a lot of wisdom reading Clarks ideas!!! ...

Speed Improvement for Young Athletes- How to Sprint Faster in Your Sport in 30 Workouts

5 stars (From a parent and age group coach) - Eleven of my age group soccer kids completed the 30 workouts in this book in ten weeks. After seeing the improvement in acceleration and speed, the other 8 team members and their parents are sorry they didn't join in. The 30 workouts alone are worth the price of the book. You don't need a sports science background. If you are looking for a "just do-it" approach that improves speed in short sprints, this book is for you. The book cuts to the chase. There is no need to dig out anything. Everything that is included is important and the program works. 4 stars (Univ Prof., Track Coach, Author, Former NFL Speed Consultant) - March 3, 2004 Reviewer: George R. Colfer, PhD. After reading two mixed reviews from 2002 and 2004, I decided to read and review this book. Considering who the book was written for (i.e., young athletes), I would recommend it as a Resource and Guide for Speed Improvement. No book is ever perfect for all audiences regardless of size, length or type. When I see a title for "young athletes," I usually hold my breath as most imitate what works only for highly skilled athletes. The first thing I liked about the book was the introduction including "How to use the book" (pg. 11) and Chapter 1, which offers assessment to determine readiness for certain components of the workouts. Another example was regarding Plyometrics (pg. 90) where the author states a leg strength requirement and who by age level should avoid plyometrics, although I would rather see this at the beginning of the section as many youngsters "do" and don't read. Dr. Dintiman is very knowledgeable and also proven in the area of speed and running improvement. He has a much higher level book now in it's 3rd or 4th printing. Speed Improvement for Young Athletes is readable and follows a "how to do it" approach without a lot of "hype." My experience with speed is that it first requires self-motivation. There is a lot of material and e...

Taj Burrow-s Book of Hot Surfing

5 stars (Great) - This is hands down the best book on surfing I have ever read. Lots of helpful photos and explanations. Highly recommended. 5 stars (Great Book from a Great Surfer) - Great info that goes far beyond the regular "Learn to Surf" books. A lot of Taj slang & surf jargon but those who've been surfing for some time can really benefit from the advanced techniques & descriptions from a pro. Also a very fun book with insight by shapers, surfers, & Taj himself. Developiing surfers need more good books like this. ...

Coaching Youth Basketball- A Baffled Parent-s Guide

5 stars (A PRACTICAL AND QUICK STUDY GUIDE) - I played a lot of basketball before taking on coaching my 6 year olds' team, but I had never coached. I digested the basics of this book in about an hour and it was a roadmap to get me started. I keep reading and using it as the season progresses. Very very good for first-time coaches for kids leagues of about 5-13 years old. 5 stars (Only One Book Needed) - I struggled looking for a book written for the experienced youth coach who doesn't know much about basketball. I coach four youth sports, but I never played organized basketball. I was at a loss for drills, plays and defensive philosophies. This book gave me a huge head start and Coach Faucher's style is easy and right for the kids. I enjoy planning and running my basketball practices far more than any other sport now. Thanks Coach Faucher. Do you have one for football, . . baseball, . . soccer?????? 3 stars (Not Rocket Science) - I read this book because I thought that it would help me coach a group of 5th graders in the fundamentals of basketball. I did not learn anything new after reading this book, but I also have played basketball for many years. What was valuable to me was the drills made available. If you know nothing of basketball you'll appreciate this book. ...
